| I saw your inquiry on-line concerning your grandfather, BM Herko (Berthold M. Herko) the celebrated Jewish artist and illustrator from pre-war Berlin, Germany. My grandparents (Margit and Robert Friedler) and my Mom (Edith) knew him quite well. They immigrated to the U.S. from Vienna, Austria via England, in October 1940, arriving in NYC. They initially rented a room, in an apartment, in a building on the corner of Columbus Avenue and ~ 80th Street, where they lived for a few months. Your grandfather, BM Herko, his wife (Ilse?) and their little son (Peter?) also rented a room in the same apartment. My Mom remembers that there was also daughter (Vivian?), who was born later. Ultimately (~1948) my family moved to Jackson Heights, NY. They still were in touch with your grandfather at that time because I believe that he attended my parents wedding in June of 1948. He gave my parents a painting as a wedding gift. My mom also told me that she remembers going to one of your grandfather's art exhibits at the Van der Straeten Galleries on Madison Avenue.
I hope that this has been helpful. Small world!
