Can anyone give me information please?

Posted by rottenlivia (My Page) on

I have been online 2 hours today and have found many prints of this work but no information of the artist beyond his name. The work is The Shepherdess. The artist is Johann Baptist Hofner. I would like to know more about him. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I would be most grateful.
Thank you,
Kim

Hi minnie

Hi minnie,
I just realized when your link came up that these all show his work but give no information. He painted such a poignant face on the young woman in my print and had such feeling in the piece that I wanted to know a bit about him, himself. Guess I'll have to go to the library on some spare minute and look him up. Actually, just finding his name was a surprise.

Sorry, I didn't check any of them out. Maybe do a Google search for a biography?

a little bit

This is all I could find
Born on 30 April 1832, Johann Hofner was a painter of animal and genre scenes.

After his schooling, he became a pupil of Piloty whilst living in Munich, Germany. He then went on to exhibit his paintings from 1863, in both Munich and Vienna. One of his paintings can be seen in the museum in Munich.

Johann Hofner died on 29 June 1913, in Munich.

That is so much more than I could find. Thank you! I am going to check the link you provided now. I so admire the ability some persons have to capture the emotions on a face. To set light in the sky and have it seem that you could feel the warmpth, feel the drapery of the fabric of a dress, it is a gift from Jehovah and one I don't possess. Thanks again,
Kim

I do not know if you are still interested in information about Johann Baptist Hofner, or not, but you may find this page to be extremely helpful as it provides very colorful commentary on his life (unfortunately, it is a German page, but you can chose the translated version. I would have included that here, instead, but such a link is about a mile long and would have made reading this message very uncomfortable for you):

I am an art researcher, so it may interest you to know how I located this info for you. A trick I often use for a very tricky artist is to take that artist's name along with the word "memorial," then google a search. Cemeteries often post memorial statements online, even quite old ones, which usually include significant vital personal information. Usually you have to go through several pages of search material to find anything useful. In this case, I did not find any memorial material, but did find a helpful site for another artist, a friend of Hofman's that listed his original college of study, the Akademie de Bildenden Künste, in Munich. So, I then ran a search using his name and that of the academy, and a wealth of German sites appeared concerning he, his life, and his work. If you run such a search yourself, you, too, will find all these further sites, many of which have a translation program.

I only hope this helps you in some small way!
