I have an 8x10 inch watercolor signed Aug.v.d. Linde-,45. The title is "FIETSEN VORDEREN" The theme seems to be confiscation of bicycles by the Nazis.
I would appreciate any information on the above or suggestions regarding how to seek information. Thanks,

Fietsen Vorderen is one out of 18 watercolors from a set "Zo Was Nederland in de Winter 1944 - 1945" or translated "This was Holland during the winter of 1944 - 1945". I was there at the time, 14 years old, and remember it well. They also took my bicycle. One funny story that tells you a lot about the Dutch nature occurred in 1965 when I had been send by Bank of America to work in Amsterdam. Princess Beatrix, the current Queen, married Prince Claus, a German who had been in the SS. This was, of course, televised and when the procession went through the city of Amsterdam, the TV camera panned up to one of the apartments along the canals and there some people held a large white sheet between several windows up high with the words: "I want my bicycle back!" Let me know if you receive this message Willem Ridder Clayton, CA originally from the city of Rotterdam |

| Willem! Thanks for the reply. What an unexpected joy to find this in my mailbox! Receiving the information was great but having it come from someone who was there at the time made it of much greater significance. I shall place a copy of your post in the frame with the watercolor which I found at a flea market last summer. The story of the banner was very interesting also. Thanks again, Dale Spear Glasgow, KY |

| Aug. v.d. Linde was my great uncle. I've never seen any of his watercolors, but my parents were given an oil painting by him when they were married in 1956, just prior to immigrating to the U.S. I met him in 1979 during my first trip there and he did a charcoal portrait of me. I find it difficult to find any of his work on the market, but there are several portraits he did of the Royal Family members in a museum (I forget the name) in The Netherlands. |

| I have 'Zoo was Nederland in de winter 1944-1945' and I looked for more information about it. That's why I came here. The information given is very useful but I must make a correction. PRINCE CLAUS WAS NEVER A MEMBER OF THE SS (the SS was an special elite unit and was the radical/terrible branch of the army (leadership, guarding and leading concentrationcamps)). He was member of the Hitler Youth (mandatory for all young German boys at the time) and later he had to serve the Wehrmacht (ordinary army). If he had joined the SS, he was never allowed to marry our queen Beatrix. |
