i used to be very active, but i broke my wrists jumping over stairs with my r'blades and couldn't draw for like 4 1/2 months, and now i can't bring myself to skate anymore, at least not to the point where i work up a sweat. this is killing me! i realize that many of our artistic pursuits do not contribute heavily to physical fitness. what, if anything, are you guys and girls doing to counter the fat atrophy monster?

here's hoping not all of you out there are as lazy as me, lol...

RE: physical activity

I walk everywhere I can. Walking is a good way to keep the joints lubricated. It also keeps the mind centered (buddhism), and the spine stright. However, I know what you mean...artists are generally sedentary people...LOL.

On the other hand, drawing large requires much physical activity; therefore, I can personally account that art can be physical.

I had an injury in 1984 that prevented me from surfing again. Unusual summer storms that year dislocated my left shoulder in a bad way. Bad enough that it had chronic tendencies to "pop out" for the next six years.

So...to keep myself from subscribing to a gym, I do the usual active things on the weekends...hiking for two or three hours, even if it is through downtown LA...LOL. Lots to explore in the city.

Gallery hunting through Venice Beach, and Santa Monica a few weeks ago certainly kept me on my feet the majority of the week. A Chiropractor friend of mine told me that our bodies evolved to be upright or laid down when resting. Sitting is not all that good for us. Afterall, we're Homo Erecti. So I work upright at the easel. I've also adapted to working on the computer at a slightly higher than waist high work table.

Just keep this in mind, one lives longer if we sleep more and eat less! Coupled with daily activity and the occasional strenuous activity should be enough to keep the weight from creeping up around the waistline...providing that we don't abuse food consumption or have the unfortunate genetic thyroid disorder.

I'm not striving for bulky fitness; rather, keeping my 32" waist. Not really having to work extra for it. I definitely can't stand the pretentious atmosphere of a gym. If I'm hopping on a bike, I'd rather it not be a stationary model! So much beauty to see out there. So much people to look at and study!
