))) *** Tech query for Oil Painters

| Dear All
Would you kindly advise me on the pros and cons of painting with oil(to modify, not to overpaint completely) over an existing oil painting which has already been varnished? I know that some may suggest a removal of varnish over the areas to be repainted, but that's tricky(risk of damaging underlying painted layer) and painstaking. So... is it possible to simply overpaint? And what about longterm changes? Thank you so much

I have done two things: 1)oil-painted directly and in a localized area over the pre-existing varnish. 2)Used Retouching varnish to cover an area (in an oil painting which had been varnished about a year ago). When the retouching varnish was dry, I painted over that area with oil. It looks good for now, but I am worried about long-term changes e.g. will the repainted layer peel off/crack, esp when/if I roll the canvas? I haven't yet found anything specific on this, but I am looking. Anyway, thanks for your interest CMcVay. I noted that you are now "the lover" and not "the fighter" :-)) Best regards Roy |
