God knows it wasn't the promise of respect, notoriety or wealth. So what was it?

there's always the choice of doing something you don't really want to do but which offers financial security. but i know what you mean, it's not like you're looking through a career fair brochure one day and go "hmm, 'artist' looks like a good career choice...". in my case at least, i've grown up with the knowledge that i was going to be an artist. i've taken a few odd jobs over the last 5 or 6 years, and all i can think about while i'm working is getting back the the studio. it makes doing any other kind of work unbearable. i'm sure there's a lot more to it than just that, but that's the reason i'm not doing anything else.

i became a artist at first because i thought i would get instanly famous and rich, but then i realised that was not how it worked, art changed me as did rocknroll it, i would say music and art are brother and sister, but they they need to be free the ability of creating my vision so other people could see it, touch it experience it, has been a journy of selfdiscovery. its more of a question of what is an artist? a true artist is someone who has surpassed technque and skill and trancended them into a visual language, and uses his brain, questions authority, and thinks for himself. i belive music and art can change the world. and my own art work whether it be stone carving, oil painting or experimental music is a summery of myself in terms of my asthetic, philosphilical judgment.

Hmm, because to "make a thing", seemed like a wonderful ability. I've been making things since I was a kid. Here is a link that might be useful: http://dreamvigil.com/

Art and football were the only things I was ever really any good at, and I was never that good at football anyway...For some people it is a choice I think, for others a compulsion. I would be a better artist if it was the latter but maybe less happy.

I was at a career fair in high school... Seriously, the last semester of high school rolled up on me and I didn't really have the grades to study anything else. If I wanted more education then I had to go to art school. I'm glad I didn't have too many choices though. Sometimes it gets a little rough and I feel like saying "Screw this! I'm going to law school!" But I can't so I just work harder at it... sorry bit of a rant there. but it is amazing to be able to do this isn't it?

Frustration at the point where I have taken my life. It's the same old story. I took the path with less resistance, got a job, making good money and am quite comfortable. I'm still doing the same job but I have recently proclaimed myself as an artist (visual creative) and have actually started to just draw. It has been years. My sketch book is filled with more drawings in the last two months than I have ever drawn in the past decade. I will be taking classes, too. Then I will make a career out of it. I also agree with everybody. Once started I can't put art down. Art has been my faithful and true talent since I was a boy. Sometimes I feel like it's my prodigal son. It is a genuine pleasure to have it back and I'll make sure art stays in my life. Wish me luck and good luck to all!

I belive you are born with a yearning to let your inner voice be spoken if you are a true artist. You can't not be heard from the moment you find your talent again!!!!! Some people dable, some people have hobbies and some can't not create because it is what they are. We are a conduit to a higher voice that won't be stopped. We touch the face of God when we create, and hit nirvana as we do it. It is the end all of our exsistance. We can't not create!!! It is our joy and the reason to go on. So we are artists!!!!! Ayn |

I had to. I'm not happy unless I'm involved in a creative project. Same as some of the previous answers, I didn't really become an artist, but AM one, always have been, and am finally taking the time to look after that side of me more than before.
