RE: Artist Sydney Bell

I have a print of a little girl done by Sydney Bell. It is entitled "Charlotte". It says that the publication was done by Edward Gross, Inc. of New York City.

Were you able to get any kind of information on him?

Thanks,
Janet

I also have the Old Man of Capri and an old lady, but the signature does not look like Bell's on the old lady. The pictures do look like a pair. Bell's signature on the old man is printed and on the old lady the signature is in cursive. The stricking thing about these pictures are the red hat and the red scarf, besides the faces being so beautiful. I have not been able to find info on Bell. My pictures are 50 + years old and came to me from Wisconsin. I will keep watching for more info.

I have been researching Sydney Bell's "Charlotte" and "Peter" portraits that were a wedding gift to my parents in 1942 in Ontario.
They are dated 1923. On a website about Maria Raffaele-Vergori, a Portland, Oregon artist, there is a reference to
a Sydney Bell, Master Teacher who graduated from The Royal
Academy of Art in England. Research Assistant, Andrew Potter at the Royal Academy, was unable to find any listings if him as a student or artist. Today I found another copy of Charlotte published by Edward Gross Co. Inc. N.Y. Paired with this was a portrait of "Richard" which was a similar style but the signature looked like
"Ross Chambers". Please let me know if you find out any
more history on "Sydney Bell" Thanks Joyce

I have a 7x9 set of Charlotte and Peter -- they belonged to my grandparents(Larson)and passed down to us. I believe there is another set floating around my family. Today I took them out of their frames so that I could see the artist's name (with the help of a magnifying glass) -- Sydney Bell 1923. They belonged to my grandparents. Charlotte's collar has light blue edging as does the tie. There are no markings or writings other than "Sydney Bell 1923" I was delighted to find something on the Internet -- thanks!

The book "Oregon Painters The First Hundred Years" states Sydney Bell (1888-1964) Born London England Died Coos Bay Oregon. Photo of the artist page 81. He studied at the Royal College of Art London. Specialty was portraits. He had a sucessful career as an art professor at Cheltenham, England, was a cartoonist for Vanity Fair, and a portrait painter for the nobility when he left for Portland at the instigation of some art patrons. He became Oregons premier portrait painter. I have an original oil and pastel of his and the quality is top notch.

My Grandmother (Wilcox) also has Charlotte and Peter hanging in her bedroom....seems it was a popular wedding gift! :)

This set was bought in a small shop in Brantford/Waterford Ont. in the early 40's.
( Oddly enough on the boy the signature is Arthur Garrett, but I've not found much on him to date.)

Thank you for all who have collected data, Gran. will be happy to have some background.

I found two small water color portraits of a boy and a girl by I believe--Sydney Bell 1923, at a garage sale today. They are framed under glass. The detail of the eyes and hair is astonishing. I can make out the name in dark letters-- Bell on one, but cannot conclusively make out the name Sydney, although there is a name in front of Bell, it has faded and is hard to read. There is more white lettering beneath "Bell" something like "O.E.G.C..." I can't make out the rest. I am afraid to remove the painting from the frame for fear I might damage it. Any comments??? Thanks

Sidney Bell married my ancestor Emily Hayward in London and emigrated to the U.S. in 1914 with his daughter Joyce. He later had a daughter Sidney (also possibly known as Pauline). He became a well known portrait painter in Oregon. I am interested in trying to find out anything about him and his descendants so if you can help please let me know!!

My mother had them too. My parents were married in the 1950's. I fell in love with them as a child, so much so that I named my daughter Charlotte. I thought it the loveliest name I ever heard.
