Has anyone seen this? I'm not that familiar with Jim Jarmusch (the director) and rented this from Netflix mainly because I'm a Jessica Lange fan. Overall, I enjoyed it although I would have to say that it was unsatisying in the end. Who was the actual mother of Bill Murray's son? Did he even have one???!!!
I'm not really a fan of Bill Murray's deadpan acting but I found all the snippets by the actresses (Lange, Tilda Swinton, Frances Conroy and Sharon Stone) quite enjoyable. |

I saw this and posted my opinion on another thread. As for the mother of the son, remember it was suggested by the neighbor that his former girlfriend had been the one who possibly wrote the letter. I thought the ending was kind of neat, even though it did leave you dangling. But real life can be like that. I thought the women were wonderfully cast, also. As I said in my other thread, why were there so many long pauses where Bill Murray's character was just staring out into space??? BTW, I liked Bill Murray much better in his role in "Lost in Translation."

Thanks, I did a search and couldn't locate your previous posting. I also wondered whether or not Murray's friend (Jeffrey Wright) may have cooked it up to get his out of his rut and out of the house.

Yeah, Philip, that same thought occurred to me, too. Remember also that he was looking at a web site on how to write mysteries when he called his neighbor over to help him with the computer. It made me wonder if the neighbor cooked up the entire thing as a sort of mystery-fantasy to jump start his own writing career. Did the movie seem unnecessarily long and repetitive to you?

It did indeed. Like you said, there are way too many scenes of Bill Murray staring into space. I think that it could have been trimmed about 15 minutes and nothing would have been lost.
