Speaking of Oscars

I am brand new to this board and pretty new to boards in general. I would like to share a little Oscar trivia with you all each day.
Q: Which actress holds the record for the most nominations?

A: Meryl Streep has been nominated 13 times.

Follow-Up Postings:

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Hi Beth and welcome. I remember when Meryl broke Katharine Hepburn's record. It was kind of sad even though I really admire Meryl.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I remember that too. Kate still has Meryl beat in the win category, though. She won 4 Best Actress awards.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Hi Beth!! Have fun with us.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Q: how many Oscars did Alfred Hitchcock win?

A: He never won an Academy Award, although he was nominated five times.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Q: Who has won the most Academy Awards in history?

A: Walt Disney has won 26

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Q: In what year did Jack Nicholson win his first Oscar?

A: In 1975 for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Only 3 films have ever won Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress And Screenplay. What were they?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

One of them is "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," I think.

Best Picture
Nicholson - Best Actor
Louise Fletcher - Best Actress
Milos Forman - Best Director
Best Screenplay

By the time I think of the others, someone will have already given the answers -- but it's half the fun to spread the answers around. :-)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

That is one of them. The other is older and the third is a more recent film. Keep guessing!

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I think Kramer vs. Kramer is one.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I'll guess "On the Waterfront"

Marlon Brando - Best Actor
Eva Marie Saint - Best Actress
Elia Kazan - Best Director

 o
RE: Speaking of OscarsOO

"Silence of the Lambs" got Best Picture.
Anthony Hopkins was Best Actor.
Jodie Foster was Best Actress.
I can't think of the director's name. Best Director?
I'm guessing that since SotL got Best Picture it also got Best Screenplay.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Silence of the Lambs and It Happened One Night

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

That's it. The three are:

It Happened One Night
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Silence of the Lambs

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

oh, I was thinking Meryl Streep won for best actress, but it was really best supporting actress for her in Kramer vs. Kramer..close but no cigar.

Here's one I think I know the answer to, but I'm not sure...

Who won the most consecutive oscars?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I think it may be a tie? Tom Hanks is one I believe, for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Luise Rainer won two in a row, in 1936 & 1937.

Katharine Hepburn did too, in 1967 & 1968.

I don't anyone has every won three in a row, have they?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars!!

I think it remains at a tie Phillip for now Phillip, I keep waiting for Meryl Streep to hit that mark!

 o
okay...

Okay, I think I have all of them:

Actors:

Spencer Tracy - 1937 - Captains Courageous
1938 - Boys Town

Tom Hanks - 1993 - Philadelphia
1994 - Forrest Gump

Jason Robards - 1976 - All The President's Men
1977 - Julia
(Both of his were in the Supporting Actor category)

Actresses:

Luise Rainer - 1936 - The Great Zeigfeld
1937 - The Good Earth

Katharine Hepburn - 1967 - Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
1968 - The Lion In Winter

 o
another question...

Shall we continue? I love the Oscars!

Who was the only posthumous acting award winner?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Who has been nominated the most times consecutively for the same award?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Peter Finch was posthumously awarded the Best Actor for Network.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars!!!!!

I'm guessing at either Bette Davis or Katherine Hepburn ?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Frieda's correct about Peter Finch.

I think Paula may have it on the other question. I would guess Bette Davis.

I know one of my favorite actresses, Jennifer Jones, got 4 in a row in the mid 40s. I'm sure Bette did better.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Name 3 stars who have never received oscar nomiations

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I could only find two for Peter Finch. Jennifer Jones was nominated four years in a row, but one was for supporting actress. Bette Davis is the champ with five (1939-1943). There are at least two with four in a row. Any guesses?

 o
guessing

What about Meryl Streep or Spencer Tracy?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Beth, I think you are a bit confused about Peter Finch -- he was the answer to another question posed by Phillip upthread.

Greer Garson got several nominations in a row, I think. She won for Mrs. Miniver.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Oops, didn't read all the words. Yes, Greer Garson was nominated five years in a row and won for Mrs. Miniver --- one of my favorite movies.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Marlon Brando was nominated four years in a row --- 1951-54
Liz Taylor was also nominated four years in a row --- 1957-60

Which lady has won the most awards for best actress?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Katherine Hepburn. Am I getting confused?

Asking again because I think it was missed....
Name 3 stars who have never received oscar nominations.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

How about Meg Ryan, Adam Sandler and Ewan Mcgregor....I mention these three because they are well known/good enough to have received Golden Globe nominations, but not Oscar nods. Are you looking for older actors?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Bestlawn,

Since you didn't put any restrictions on that query, here are my (tongue in cheek) choices :

Paulie Shore
Paul Rubens (aka Pee Wee Herman)
Jennifer Love Hewitt

actually, some better choices would be :

Moe, Larry, and Curly! ;-) (these would be in the "older actors" category!)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Joel McCrea, Edward G. Robinson, Maureen O'Hara

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

So the q's that are still up in the air are:

1) Name 3 stars who were never nominated for an Oscar.
2) Which lady has won the most awards for best actress?

Well, I know in the director category, Martin Scorscese, Robert Altman and Alfred Hitchcock never won anything.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

1) Name 3 stars who were never nominated for an Oscar.

Marilyn Monroe
Tobey Maguire
Jim Carrey

2) Which lady has won the most awards for best actress?

Katharine Hepburn -

Morning Glory (1933)
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)
The Lion in Winter (1968)
On Golden Pond (1981)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Who is the oldest Oscar winner in the acting category?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Jessica Tandy in "Driving Miss Daisy"?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

That's right. She won her Oscar at the age of 80 for "Driving Miss Daisy."

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

My gosh, I just guessed at this.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Who was Oscar named after?
(Bonus question: what about Emmy and Tony?)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I stole these real good.

There are three theories about the derivation of the term "Oscar." Some historians says that academy librarian and future executive director Margaret Herrick named it after her uncle, Oscar Pierce. Others credit showbiz columnist Sidney Skolsky, who is said to have used the term while referring to an old vaudeville joke that began "Will you have a cigar, Oscar?" Bette Davis took credit, too, saying that it the naked statuette reminded her of her husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson, Jr.

The term "Emmy" is a feminization of "Immy," a nickname for the image orthicon camera used to film TV in the 1940s.

Tony -- actually Toni -- was the nickname of a stunningly beautiful but tough-as-nails Denver actress, Antoinette Perry, who later turned successfully to producing and directing in an era when women in the business were usually relegated to acting, costume design or choreography.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Way to go, bestlawn! All correct!

What I never could understand tho, was, why not simply CALL it the Immy?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

click pic for website

The Emmy Statuette

"A television engineer named Louis McManus designed the statuette, using his wife as a model. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) says that the statuette represents the arts (a winged woman) and the sciences (an atom). The first Emmys were given out in 1949. The original name for the award was the Immy, a nickname for the image orthicon tube, part of an early type of camera; but the academy began referring to it as the Emmy because that more feminine name suited the statuette. The R.S. Owens Co. of Chicago makes the Emmy statuettes. (This company also makes the Oscars, the awards given out by the film industry.) An Emmy is made of several different metals -- copper, nickel, silver -- but it is covered in 18 karat gold. It weighs 4-3/4 pounds (2.15 kg), and is 16 inches (40.64 cm) high."

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Which films have received the most nominations?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Off the top of my head, I would say "Titanic"

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Lord of the Rings?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Titanic is correct. It received 14 nominations. There is one ohter that received 14. It is not Lord of the Rings.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Gone With the Wind? or Best Years of Our Lives?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Ben Hur?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Nope to all of those. Any more guesses?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Hmmm? Chariots of Fire?

I still don't why just not call it the Immy. I don't think Immy or Emmy makes much difference!

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Ghandi

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

All about Eve
I cheated

Moongirl, I think they wanted to give it a feminine name the general public could identify with. The statuette is of a woman, but no one would have associated "Immy" with a female and therefore probably never figure out what the statuette is supposed to be or what it represents. Because no one knows a camera called "Immy" it is/was not something anyone is familiar with. Yet, everyone knows "Emmy" to be short for "Emily". I agree though, it would have been nice and different.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Of course, it's "All About Eve." I can't believe I didn't think of it, it is one of my favorite films.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Who won best actor and best director for the same film?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Hmm, maybe Laurence Olivier in Hamlet. He got Best Actor and it was Best Picture, not sure if he was Best Director though.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

beth,

Are you sure there's an answer to your question? I tried everyone I could think of...There's a lot for acting nominations with directing wins, but I couldn't find any with wins for both. Can you give a us/me a hint? Thanks.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Mel Gibson?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

beth, I can't find it either.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

According to my info it was Robert Begnini in 1997 for Life is Beautiful. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will let me know. :)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Robert Begnini was nominated but did not win for best director. Spielberg won best director with "Saving Private Ryan" that year.

So I'm guessing no one won both best director and actor for the same film.

Here's a new question:

Who was nominated for both best actor and best supporting actor in the same role?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I think it was Barry Fitzgerald in a movie I watch at least once a year, Going My Way.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Yep, that's right!

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Who was the youngest star to win an Oscar?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Tatum O'Neal

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Nope!

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Shirley Temple?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I think Shirley Temple won some special type of Academy Award. Does she count?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Tatum O'Neal is the youngest in a competitive category.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Did Jackie Cooper or Mickey Rooney win anything when they were young?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Right, Paula & Phillip. Tatum Oneal did win in a competing category. However, Shirley Temple "won an unofficial 'juvenile' Academy Award in 1934 (an honorary award presented on February 27, 1935)." She was six year and 310 days old at the time. That has to count based on the question.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I got one...what year was the rule changed to limit the Best Picture category to 5 nominees?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

2001???
That's a hard one, Paula :)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I'll guess 1940?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

My guess would be in the late 50's to early '60's

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Yoooohooo, Paula

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

It was 1944

What year was the category of Costume Design added?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

The first one I remember was in 1950 when Edith Head won for All About Eve.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

That Oscar was introduced in 1948, Edith Head getting the first nomination, but did not win that year.

How many Oscars did Edith Head win? (She had an impressive 30 nominations in 19 years!)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I know it was a lot - around 12 - 15?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Back to the other question - the youngest to win an Oscar WAS Tatum O'Neal until...Anna Paquin broke that record, winning it at age 11 for her role in The Piano.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Moongirl, Tatum was 10 when she won hers, so she is still the youngest. I think Paquin is the second youngest to win.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Darn, Paula. I'm finding conflicting information. Several sites say something different. Here are 3 of them.
Costume Designers Guild Hall of Fame says 33 nominations,8 awards
Encyclopedia Britannica says 34 nominations, 8 awards
Yahoo.com>says 29 years, 29 nominations, 6 wins

moongirl, Shirley Temple's award was not in a competing category, not even a category of any kind. However, it was an Oscar. My question was "Who was the youngest star to win an Oscar?" I didn't ask about best actor or best supporting or anything like that. It's kind of a trick question because I wasn't specific. Tatum and then Anna both won in the best supporting category. But, that wasn't the question.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

So, to sum it up...

Shirley Temple was the youngest to win an Oscar (although it was an honorary one) at age 6;
Tatum O'Neal was the youngest to win a competitive Oscar at Age 10;
And, Anna Paquin was also a very young winner at age 11.

On to the question Paula posted; How many Oscars did Edith Head win?

I'll guess 17.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

My guess way way off. According to IMDB it looks like she may have won eight awards. Not sure how accurate it is though.

Some of the discrepancies may come from the fact that some years she was up for and won awards in both the color and black and white costume design categories for the same year.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

I have checked several encyclopedias and the Info Please Almanac. They all say Edith Head won 8 Oscars.

I have a new one -

Earlier, we said that Jessica Tandy was the oldest Oscar winner in an Acting category.

Who was the oldest nominee in an acting category? (Hint - it was in a supporting category)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Gloria Stuart in Titanic?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

George Burns for The Sunshine Boys?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Ralph Richardson, 82

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Carla got it - Gloria Stuart was 87 when was nominated for "Titanic"

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Hume Cronyn?

Back to Edith Head, according to my John Harkness paperback, it says 7 won.

Here's another: A nobody named Robert Opal made Academy Awards history in 1973. Do you know how?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

He was the naked streaker. Does everyone remember? LOL
Really good one, Paula!

On that supporting category nominee, I only looked for actors. Silly me. That was a good call, Carla.

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Who left their Oscar in the bathroom, in 1979? :-D

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Maggie Smith?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

No, it was Meryl Streep!

What 2 actors tied for Best Actor?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Wallace Beery (The Champ) and Fredric March (Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde)

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

What two well known animated movies from last year (2004) were NOT nominated in the best animated feature category?

 o
RE: Speaking of Oscars

Ice Age 2?
