January - what are you watching?

Just saw "It's Complicated" and liked it a lot. Very funny in places, with excellent acting by Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin. Meryl is amazing --- she just gets better with age....

I saw lukewarm reviews by critics on that,, but jeez, I'd see anything with the wonderful Meryl Streep. Saw Julie & Julia recently...just amazed once again.

A good film I just saw about East Berliner's trying to escape - true story - 'Der Tunnel' . Very worth the 3 hours.

I recently saw a hijacked copy of Precious, based on the novel 'Push'. What a powerful emotional drama. I would be surprised if the actress Mo'Nique is not nominated for an Oscar...surely she'll get many other awards. Mostly I came away from this movie feeling extremely lucky.

Went to see AVATAR over the holidays. No words to describe my JOY! Absolutely breathtaking special effects, particularly the actors' animation. Can't wait for the DVD to see the bonus features of How'dtheydothat? Just blows your frea-kin mind. Am I the only one who's in total awe??

I'm a sucker for sci-fi, so it's way up there on my list, and a love story to boot? HOO-HAH.
Ok, the basic premise is been-there-done-that, army vs protection of natural resources and S. Lang's stereotypical character, but geez Louise, it's just something you HAVE to see to believe. Could watch it again and again!

Also watched Julie and Julia, really good (made me hungry lol) and next on my list is 500 Days of Summer

I went to see Avatar with two of my daughters. I simply loved it. We saw it in 3D but not in IMAX. I've read a number of SF stories with the same elements so the story was not original, but it was exceptionally well done.

I also look forward to seeing It's Complicated. Meryl Streep is by far my favorite comic actress. That is not to downplay her ability in dramatic roles. It's just that her ability to make us laugh is a revelation.

Lets' start this New!

I saw the "King's Speech" and "Under the Yum Yum Tree".
The first I beleive is def. an Oscar winner.

Though, the later got bad reviews, Jack Lemmon made me laugh throughout the movie.

RE: January - what are you watching?

I watched "Gone with the wind" on TCM I can appreciate the production after all these years. Scarlett sure was a manipulator.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Saw The King's Speech yesterday and thought Firth's performance and his interaction with Rush was excellent. All the audience were willing Bertie to get the words out.
Watched it in a small English cinema and most of the people there were well into their eighties. The film obviously brought back strong memories for them.
The BBC must be spitting nails that they didn't take up the offer to make it.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Watched The Social Network over the weekend. I started out with the expectation of not liking the movie based on the storyline, but geez Louise, Jesse Eisenberg was amazing (always thought he was sort of dorky/geeky in a misfit sort of way in real life). He seems very shy, yet very witty in public.

RE: January - what are you watching?

Hello, I have just popped in here from Readers Paradise where I am a regular. Just saw Black Swan and I must say I found it quite dull. What do you think? I'm sure many here have seen the film. Although there were some terrific performances, I found it cliched and predictable. I did love Vincent Cassel as Thomas and Barbara Hershey as the mother. When Cassel was in a scene, I couldn't take my eyes off him, or decide whether he was unbelievably sexy, or unbelievably ugly, terribly complex or just shallow - in short, a truly great performance.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Welcome siobhan!

I haven't seen B.Swan yet but it's right after King's Speech on my "MUST SEE" list! :D

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Watched "The Harder They Fall" and "The Long Memory".

Bogart, and Steiger, really good combo.

The latter, director's shots could of been better.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Haven't seen The King's Speech yet. Sounds like it's set to win big at the Oscars.

Loved True Grit! Pure genius on the part of the Coen brothers using the book's actual dialect!

RE: January - what are you watching?

Saw "The Kids Are Fine" w/ Julianne Moore and Annette Benning. Even tho' it's about the emotional frictions between a lesbian couple, it was described as very fine by The New York Times film critic -- could be enjoyed by "straight" as well as "gay" filmgoers. Since it was at a cinema by my gym, I went to see it. Well ... it was quite "blah" ... moved slowly, had mundane dialogue, v. average goings-on -- in short, a bore!

If anyone here felt differently, I'd like to hear your opinion -- really !

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Also saw "It's Complicated" via "On Demand" (a cable TV service). I really enjoyed it. And didn't you love that house Meryl Streep's character lived in?

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

I saw the "Social Network", that was good.

Lauramarie, the house was beautiful!

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

lauramarie, I actually thought "The Kids Are Fine" was excellent.

I watched "I Am Love". Tilda Swinton is just awesome in it.

But nothing could come close to "The King's Speech.."

Did you guys hear that there is going to be yet another re-make of "Jane Eyre"?

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Woodnymph2 - Tilda Swinton is one of my favourite film actresses. I hadn't heard of "I Am Love." Will look for it on rental service. Do you know how long ago it was released? Movies take at least 6 months to reach cable TV's rental line-up. ... Am awaiting "The King's Speech" to come up there in about another half-year. ... As to "The Kids Are Fine" -- I like Julianne Moore, but even she couldn't liven up this movie for me. As for Annette Benning, she leaves me cold -- always has -- something "very studied" about her.

Yes, as to the "Jane Eyre" re-re-re-re-make. It doesn't thrill me from the ads I've seen on TV. The most accurate version I've ever seen is one that was shot a long time ago for British TV in the early-1980s -- the dialogue; settings - indoors and outdoors; the plot progression; and -- best of all -- the casting! -- were all so TRUE to the novel. It starred Timothy Dalton as Rochester, ____?__ Clarke as JE, and some delightful old character actress as Rochester's housekeeper (the rest of the cast was spot-on, too ... face, physique, vocal quality, persona). We talked about this at length and in great detail at another Website, and most of us voted this version as the best one done ever.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Just saw "Winter's Bone". What a Chilling Movie! Very Well Directed and perfect casting.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

I also really enjoyed Winter's Bone. Talk about strife, eh? Hat's off to screenwriter/director Debra Granik - she's to watch out for in coming years. And of course Jennifer Lawrence's riveting Oscar-worthy performance.

Re: The Kids are Fine, I also thought the movie was, well, ho-hum. Perhaps it was the directing? I dunno, I just thought the characters (all of 'em) were sort of one-dimensional. Just could not figure out where Ruffalo's character's head was at, dang! Was he, like, 16?? lol

Re Tilda Swinton. Definitely a good actress, gets good roles, but geez Louise, could someone please tell her how to dress?? Everytime she hits any red carpet, she looks positively SPOO-KY!

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

I video taped that production when of Jane Eyre it was on the very best I have a lot of other versions but as you say it was the truest to the book and in fact, I went to England to see Timothy Dalton on stage in 1986 because of that production

I feel the same way about the earlier Masterpiece of Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciarn Hinds, the best of the best

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Ciarin Hinds is one of my favourite British actors. Too bad we (in the U.S.) don't see him except once in a blue moon. He was wonderful in that English film a couple years ago -- "Miss Pettigrew [something]". Am not sure if even that is the right title. ... It starred Frances McDormand as the "Miss" of the title. Speaking of favourites -- she is such a wonderful actress ... have liked her since I saw "Fargo". She seems to embody every character she plays ... no matter how different they are from each other. She has such a great range!

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Frances McD, oh yes, love her! Read After Burning was a hoot! She also had a small part in Friends with Money that got my attention.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Thanks for the recommendations, Clairabelle -- they sound intriguing.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

lauramarie, it was Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. The movie didn't make it to our neck of the woods, but the book, recently reprinted, is very funny.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Thank you, Vee. ... And who is the author? I'd love to read it. ... Didn't even know it *was* a book. Now you've got me all excited!

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Lauramarie, the author is Winifred Watson, always described as 'an ordinary housewife' from the North of England, as though it is really unusual that a female from that part of the UK should be able to write. ;-) I think everyone would enjoy the book; it is really a fun read.

 o
RE: January - what are you watching?

Vee -

Thank you! This is on my "Books To Look For" list.
