reggie - Sideways

I was watching the end of "The Critics' Choice Awards" last night and thought you might like to know that "Sideways" won best picture. I know the award itself may not mean that much, but I thought that they said they have picked the same last eight out of nine winners as the Oscars.

Just in case your interested, Jamie Foxx won best actor and Hilary Swank, actress...I didn't see any others but I read Sideways took both the supporting actor categories and a few other ones as well. Looked like a little sweep for Sideways.

Carla, thanks for the update. I missed the show but I am glad to see that quality won out. This movie was an example of ensemble acting at its best. No big stars, just 4 good actors and nobody was trying to top anyone else. Thanks for the tip. One of my friends has it on TIVO so I may have to sneak over and watch it!

We just came back from seeing Sideways. Both of us really enjoyed it. Excellent writing, acting and direction.

It was also fun to see so many locations that are familiar to us, and we got a kick out of the wine tasting theme since my husband worked in the California wine business for several years.

Good one!

The movie makes such good use of the Santa Ynez Valley, even managing to make The Windmill (actually the Day's Inn Windmill) seem like a place you would want to stay in.
I was in Napa a while back just touring for a day and I have to say I didn't meet anyone quite like Stefanie! LOL! A lot of the wine pourers in the tasting rooms seemed to be earth mother types (at the smaller wineries) or country club types at the large places (Mondavi, Chandon) but alas there was no Sandra Oh to be found!

Didn't like the movie very much but I did go on a wine tasting here in Santa Cruz a few weeks ago. I ran into a couple of beautiful young women and a few men as "experts" on wine. I could listen to them talk for hours about the soil and the sun and the rain and all that, but when they start up on the grassy notes and the strawberry finish, I lose them. I'm like Jack - I just want to drink it and enjoy.

Remember the great scene where Miles is chattering ad mauseum about the quality of some wine and Jack loooks at him and says: "It tastes good to me". I can't think of a better rebuttal to a wine snob.

It's been a while since I saw this entertaining film. Does anyone know why the title of "Sideways" or what this refers to?

Bobbie17, where was the wine tasting in Santa Cruz? And are the Smother Brothers still growing grapes on Bonny Doons?

woodnymph2 , I think it refers to the wine bottle down... on it's side - ?

RE: reggie - Sideways

Bill - the wine tasting was on the wharf near the boardwalk. I think the Smothers Brothers sold their
outfit up in Bonny Doon, but there are still several
local wineries in Santa Cruz Co. Beauregard is one of
my favorites.

Woodnymph, I assumed what Paula said, that it was called Sideways because this is the normal way to store bottled wine to keep the cork from drying out, and also because the movie is quirky.
