BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Shelley Winters, the forceful, outspoken star who graduated from blond bombshell parts to dramas, winning Academy Awards as supporting actress in "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "A Patch of Blue," has died. She was 85.

What a talent! She was one of the few former "bombshells" who survived to old age and didn't hide herself away when she got older. I thought she was hilarious on "Roseanne," spoofing her own former image. And what a range of roles she had: a small one that fascinates me is as The Concierge in Roman Polanski's "Le Locataire" (The Tenant) and she was Natalia Landauer in "I Am a Camera" (later expanded into the musical "Cabaret"). But like most moviegoers, I'm sure, I recall her best in "A Place in the Sun," "The Diary of Anne Frank," "Alfie," as Charlotte Haze in "Lolita," and of course in "The Poseidon Adventure."

So sad! I was in high school when I read her autobiography and wrote her a fan letter. She sent me a lovely autographed photo with the nicest message written on the back.

I loved her in "Lolita," "A Patch of Blue" and of course "The Poseidon Adventure."

Thought she was plain brilliant in "Night of the Hunter." That shot of her at the bottom of the lake, w/her blond hair flowing in the current in the same direction as the fronds and greens, haunted my nightmares for quite a while after seeing that movie for the first time!!!
