Apocalypse Now, good ? bad ? ugly ?

There is no other movie that I have seen as many times as Coppolas' Apocalypse Now. I have not watched it in many years because I began to realize that it was much like the book that it is loosely distilled from, that is: Hearts of Darkness. I choose not to feed my mind images of mankinds' more inhumane traits, whether they are on the 24 / 7 newscasts or the silver screen.

What is your take on Apocalypse Now ? ( let's abbreviate the title to A-N, I have trouble spelling it every time )

Having said that, I think that the movie is brilliant, even with its many shortcomings, which is what I am asking the population of this site to discuss.

Let me say that for the purposes of my topic I am talking about the movie theater version, not the directors cut that has about another hour of film that was thankfully cut out before it hit the market in the late 70's.

What character do you remember the most and why ? What is the movies greatest flaw or flaws ? Is Marlon Brando a genius or lazy bloated buffoon ? Was Martin Sheen in over his " method acting head " in his part as Capt Willard ? How would you recast it ? Did you know that the copy that you rent today has a different ending that the one that was seen in the theaters in the 70's ?

That's enough grist for the mill for now. I find so much to project into and draw from this movie because it is about " going native " as was the case in the book that is came from. That is, when a civilised person becomes too deeply steeped in a pagan culture, they are absorbed into it and become like it.

What is your take on this movie ? ( let's abbreviate the title to A-N, I always have trouble spelling Apokolips )

You are so funny, bev. Sorry, I didn't see the movie. Sounds like I missed a great one. Will have to rent it soon though. I just wanted to say your last remarks remind me of "Last of the Dogmen."

Hey bev, here's another question -- was A-N Redux better than the original cut? ;-)
