January 2005-what are you watching?

Last night I watched a DVD that was a gift for Christmas. It was The Last Time I Saw Paris starring Elizabeth Taylor, Van Johnson, Donna Reed and a young Roger Moore and Eva Gabor.
I don't know where my grandaughter bought the movie but it was very obviously a pirated copy because it was such poor quality with the color coming and going and the sound too.
Today I am going to watch my Extended version of The Return Of The King-another gift which I have been saving just for today!
As for TV all my favorite shows are back in January with all new episodes - MI-5, Stargate and 24 so my reading will probably slow down!

| I just signed up for Netflix so I could see some of the old movies I remember watching on TV when I was a kid. Our TV station every afternoon had an old movie on timed just right for when I got home from school. At the time I didn't appreciate what great movies many of them were -- they were just old movies in black and white, not the color that I wanted to see, but now I know how good they were. I also remember having a huge crush on Dana Andrews and it wasn't until he died that I realized he was older than my parents! How embarrassing. So far I have seen The Postman Always Rings Twice, Rebecca, and Crash Dive. I should be receiving Mildred Pierce and Now, Voyager next week and have many more lined up. Of course, with Lost and 24 and a few other favorite TV shows returning they may take time away from old movies. |

| Frances - Have you seen Laura? I remember it like it was recent - Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney - loved it! Pat |

| Pat, I probably did see it but I can't remember the names of most of the movies. I just checked Netflix and they don't have Laura listed. I'm so disappointed. If you remember it well it must be great. I'll just have to search somewhere else -- can't miss a memorable Dana Andrews movie! |

| I finally saw "Mr. Holland's Opus" for the first time, and loved it. I also re-visited "Dead Poets' Society" (loved Robin Williams in the very last scene). Also re-visited "The Secret Garden" and "Anastasia". Tried to watch "Sunrise at Campobello" with Bellamy & Garson, but it dragged insuffrably. Mary |

I really liked Mr Holland's Opus and it brought back lots of memories of when my daughters were all involved in music. In fact when we went I remember that the head of the music dept at the local HS sat two rows in front of us. I wondered what he thought of it-he certainly didn't have the wonderful reputation of Mr Holland! Last night I watched 2 of the 4 discs of The Return Of The King. Now I am wondering what is on the other 2 discs since the movie ended-so will try to watch today. Pat |

| I mostly watch whatever is available at the library. We have really enjoyed revisiting some old favorites like Upstairs Downstairs and also new to us movies like "Poor Man's Orange" which was very, very good. I received a Blockbuster gift card for Christmas, so maybe we will see something more recent. Any suggestions? |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| If you enjoyed Upstairs Downstairs you might enjoy Gosford Park, Forstyte Saga or Remains Of The Day, all english movies, and a newer english one which I really enjoyed was Calendar Girls. Pat |

| Finally watched Big Fish and loved it. I enjoyed the stories and, of course, just love looking at Ewen McGreggor. |

| I'm planning on seeing at least the extended version of Return of the King but not necessarily the extra stuff. I did also see 50 First Dates the other night. Interesting movie. Not exactly the regular fare that you'd expect Adam Sandler to be in. Oh, and I also saw the original Italian Job with Michael Caine. I think it had a charm that was missing from the remake. And the ending was quite ....... neat. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| Dynomutt - I don't usually watch the extra stuff on DVD's but I did watch the two discs of the extended version yesterday and am so glad that I did...especially the part about the horses in the film... Pat |

| Last week, I rented a movie which I would LOVE to discuss: A Door in the Floor. The performances were outstanding. Oscar contender for Jeff Bridges (has he even been considered?)as well as for the young director and superb scenography. I felt it so interesting to see how MY OWN perceptions changed throughout the movie. The beginning almost led me to one interpretation, one (negative)judgement, but then later I found myself feeling much more understanding, compassionate, non-judgmental of their situation. This movie shows us a range of emotions, and moves us in just as many ways. Your thoughts? |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?
| | |
| Clairabelle, go lobby for it in the discussion thread to keep it on the radar. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| "Pitates of the Caribbean" wasn't the greatest movie I have seen for sure, but Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow was great. From this movie to "Finding Neverland" what a contrast in acting. Geoffery Rush was also good. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| I saw DeLovely, fair.. but also Girl with A Pearl Earing, very good! The mounting tensions between the artist, maid, wife, mother-in-law, were keenly felt, without a lot of dialogue. Colin Firth was a little weak in his performance, but ok. Scarlett Johansson is on her way! |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?
| | |
| "Girl With a Pearl Earing" is a good one. Great lighting, costumes, etc. I know 2 women that went to Holland for vacation, and asked for Vermeer's home. They were told it was torn down many years ago. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| Sherwood -- Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to find the time to watch the extra stuff on those discs. Now if only my clients would stop bugging me while I'm watcing the movies ....... ;-) |

| I bought Troy yesterday just released and on sale at Target for only $15.99 I haven't watched it yet but plan to see it tonight since there is nothing else I care to see on TV. I saw that The Village will be available for sale next week so since I have heard so much buzz about it here I will probably buy it too. Pat |

| "Dead Man Walking", Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. From 1995 when Penn looked young and wild-eyed. Back around 1986-87 Sean Penn was at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater in Jupiter. At the time most of the actors were working for almost nothing and doing odd jobs at the theater to make ends meet. Sean Penn's name was in the news several times for fighting in restaurants and bars in the area. The talk was he would never amount to anything with all the wildness he had. Penn gives Clint Eastwood credit for showing him how to slow down and appreciate life more. |

My daughter & I watched Garden State last night and I really did not care for it. I don't know if it was a generational thing or it was just plain boring, but I couldn't see the point of the movie. I found it hard to accept that a whole group of 20-something people spent all their spare time doing drugs, sex and just generally partying...but then again I did say it might be a generational thing and I am just naive.... I really would hate to think that is what is considered recreation? BTW my DD didn't like it either. Pat |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| Pat, I watched it this past week and had the same reaction...the back of the DVD box said it was a 'coming of age' movie , I didn't get that. It was more of a revelation type, where he finally talked about the 'accident' with someone, and he felt better. Yeah, so? Just MHO |

| We watched the DVD of the original "The Manchurian Candidate," which was very good. Black & white, with Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury. We had seen the new version in the theater and loved it; it had a tighter script and great acting. This older version also had great acting and seemed even scarier. It was fun to see the interviews included in the DVD, including Frank Sinatra, from about 1980, telling stories about how the film was made. The theater trailer was there as well -- hokey, but fun to see. We also rented Woody Allen's "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion." Hubby enjoyed it, but I only liked the period furniture and clothing, finding much of the acting and script a disappointment. And, of course, we saw "Super-Size Me," which has its own discussion thread! |

| "Roger and Me" is so so. I can understand Moore's anger of his hometown turning into the worst city in America. 30,000 jobs went to Mexico, and 30,000 employees were out of luck. In my area there a lot of similiarities; instead of cars it was steel. I give him credit for doing the films on subjects of importance. |

| "Sophie's Choice" (1982) on DVD is certainly one of Meryl Streep's best, with Kevin Kline as her half-crazed lover. Streep must have spent months learning languages for this difficult part. I can't imagine many actresses obtaining this level of skill. A complex romp just after the 2nd WW. From a book by the same name. I wonder if this is a true story? I had seen the movie many years ago, and forgot who Sophie's choice really was. |

| I just watched "Open Water". It was pretty much what I expected. Although, I thought it was definitely too mellow at times considering what was going on, and it had some really, really bad acting. |

| Surviving Christmas. Ugh! What a stinker this was. I fast-forwarded through the last excruciating scenes. I'm kind of a diehard. If I pay for a movie I usually watch it even if it's really bad. And this had Gandolfini in it and Affleck, so I thought maybe..? But no-oo. |

I watched The Village last night. I know that there was a discussion about this one when it first came out, but I don't recall what everyone thought about it. It did have some suspense to it, but otherwise I didn't like it as much as Signs or the other Shyamalan's movies. Pat |

| Watched "Seeing Other People" and "We Don't Live Here Anymore." Thought both were quite good. Also saw "Bush's Brain" and "Hunting of a President." Thought both documentaries were good, interesting, and informative. |

| If you value the restorative powers of laughing out loud, do rent Napoleon Dynamite. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| We've just watched the original 1960s Roger Corman 'The Little Shop of Horrors', which was shot on a tiny budget in 2 days - it's a great little film though, with a nice running gag of Malapropisms (e.g. in response to a request for charity 'what do you think I am? A philatelist?') and features Jack Nicholson as the masochistic patient at the sadistic dentist's practice... I've got 'The Manchurian Candidate' on the mantlepiece (part of the 3 at a time DVD rental principle); and we've started watching Angel series 2, which we're alternating with Buffy series 5, as originally broadcast (we've watched all the Buffys twice before, but are new to Angel). |

| Last night I watched The Forgotten and really enjoyed it. I noticed that the DVD says that there is an 'alternate' ending but I didn't have time to watch it because I wanted to watch the new Masterpiece Theatre at 9pm-which was also good! When The Forgotten was being released into the theatres several people said they wanted to see it...did anyone else see it-what did you think? Pat |

| Last night I watched Arthur and really enjoyed it. Clive Owen was good as Arthur and although the movie had lots of battle scenes I felt that the storyline & character development was very good and enjoyed this one much more than say a movie like Troy. The fact that this version wasn't a love triangle really worked for me - anyone else see it yet? pat |

| I watched The Man in the Moon, Reese Witherspoon's first movie, with Sam Waterston and Tess Harper. This is a beautiful coming-of-age movie. I have it on my list of movies for discussion, but while I would encourage everyone to see it, I don't think it is a good discussion movie. I finished it with good feelings but not much to think about. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| I saw Arthur when it first played in the theatres and liked it a lot. I've seen every film about King Arthur ever made. This one seemed the best, although I am partial to "Excalibur."I think we discussed the treatment of Pelagian Christianity vs. its opposite on some other thread, either here or at RP. |

| Tonight was "Life as a House" (2001). What a goofy name; I watched it because of a recommendation here. One of the best I have ever seen. OK, I know I say that about most movies, but......a great DVD rental, for sure. |

| I'm continuing to see old movies. Last night I watched Shadow of a Doubt with Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotton. According to his daughter, it was Alfred Hitchcock's favorite of all the movies he made. I had never heard of it but it was excellent. Next are North by Northwest and All About Eve. |

| sherwood, last night rented The Forgotten. Hmmm, it started out really well, and as I'd heard, it kept me the edge of my seat for a good half. The premise was very interesting, but the last third fell into predictability of sorts, and frankly, I did not care for the acting. Julianne Moore was not hysterical enough, IMHO. Perhaps the screenwriter and director should take a few tips from M. Night Shyamalan as to how to hold on to our interest till the end! |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?
| | |
Clair - did you watch the alternate ending? I haven't yet but plan to... As for Moore not being hysterical, I recall that she was when told that her son never existed-but when she refused to accept that as fact she then became determined and desperate to prove that he had existed. She wouldn't have been able to have the outcome that she hoped for if she had remained hysterical through most of the movie IMHO! Pat |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

Yes I did watch the alternate ending. Shades of X-files! Oh for sure she was emotional when the doc told her that, but I just felt she was not convincing enough. The only believable emotion I FELT was when she cried at the playground at the end. I would have liked to have seen, say, Jodie Foster in that role... snif! I miss her! I did think it was an ok movie, tho. I'm a sucker for suspense! |

I watched Unbreakable last night I had never seen it all the way through (not sure why). I enjoyed it and I really like Bruce Willis, he has been good in all his movies that I have seen lately. I didn't get around to watching the Special features which was on a separate disc because it was time for MI-5! Pat |

| I saw part of Unfaithful last night on TV. I know there was a thread on this movie awhile back, but can't find it. Can somebody explain to me why the wife gave the snow globe to her lover? I just thought that was so cruel, but I didn't see the scene. And at the end do you think the husband is going to turn himself in? |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?
| | |
Price Above Rubies - Renee Zellweger Didn't like it!!! Wish someone could explain the purpose of that movie to me. I can't see why it was made. Head In The Clouds - Charlize Theron, Penélope Cruz, Stuart Townsend Loved it!!! Hated the ending, but I guess they can't all be happy ones. Bed of Roses - Christian Slater, Mary Stuart Masterson Would have liked it if it weren't so contrived. Hated the ending. |

| "A Walk to Remember", real nice rental; good theme. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| An Ideal Husband, loved it. Cate Blanchette, Rupert Everett, Jeremy Northram, Minnie Driver, Julieanne Moore - in a play by Oscar Wilde - what more can one ask? |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| Chris...I have seen "Man in the Moon" more than a dozen times and I never ever get tired of it. It really is such a sweet coming of age movie. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

Shall We Dance Absolutely loved it. I know it was discussed while still in theaters, but I rented it and know it would have been worth my trip and money to the movies. Vanity Fair Reese Witherspoon gave a good performance. I thought it was out of her genre, but she pulled it off. I was disappointed that there were so many words and lines I couldn't make out. I normally never have that problem as I love British-made and British-speaking type films. An Ideal Husband that Chris mentioned is one of my contemporary favorites. |
RE: January 2005-what are you watching?

| We rented the documentary 'Touching The Void', about the 2 men mountain climbers who sucessfully climbed Siula Grande mountain in Peru. Trouble started on the way down, one breaks his leg, and they become separated. Harrowing, extreme tale. It'll be a long time before I complain again about being cold! |
