Wes Studi Interview

Hello, friends,

I'm going to crow a bit. I had the pleasure a few months back of interviewing one of our more interesting actors. Wes Studi, a Cherokee actor from Oklahoma, provided me with an hour of his time while he was working on his next film, one about Captain John Smith and Pocahontas. You can bet that this one will have a different twist to it than the sweet, vanilla-flavored versions of which we've become accustomed.

Wes played the title role in "Geronimo", the fierce Magua in "Last of the Mohicans", an equally fierce pawnee warrior in "Dances With Wolves" and many other very convincing and memorable roles. As talented as Wes is, though, he was a great interview. This interview appeared in the December 2004 issue of "Oklahoma Men" magazine, a regional publication in Oklahoma City.

I wish there was room here to paste the whole thing, but I'm satisfied to say that I had the great pleasure of meeting a truly great actor and equally great human being.

JIMBO

RE: Wes Studi Interview

Congratulations, Jimbo! Nothing is more satisfying than a good interview with someone whom you come away respecting (even more than before, perhaps); is there?

I am very interested in this new film about Captain Smith and Pocahantas. I did see a trailer and have read a bit about it. Justice has never really been done to this great "American" tale, so far. Somehow no one has been able to capture Smith and the tone he himself set in his writings. Either he is taken too seriously or turned into a cartoon, sometimes literally. I hope this new film doesn't try to be too "reverent," though, or impose 21st-century sensibilities onto 17th-century characters.

Studi, I think, could capture Opechancanough very well indeed. I look forward to seeing him and the whole film.
