| I watched Cellular over the weekend. What a dumb movie! It did make me laugh, though, so I guess it wasn't entirely useless. |

| I watched "Ray," "Vanity Fair" and "The Notebook" over the weekend. "Ray" was terrific, much better than I expected and the whole cast is soooo good. A wonderful viewing experience. "Vanity Fair" was much better than I expected although I've read that it is not as good as other versions and doesn't adhere to the original plot (see the other thread). But still, very nice to look at! "The Notebook" - what a bore! Every scene all drawn out, way too long at 2 hours and just insipid. The movie didn't touch me but the person I was with cried their eyes out. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| I want to rent "Closer" when it comes out. I agree, Phillip, that the "Notebook" was terrible. (The book is even worse!) "Vanity Fair" worked for me, probably because I had no expections, having not read the novel. |

| Does anyone know when "Closer" will be out on dvd? |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?
| | |
| I think "Closer" will be out March 29th. I just watch "The Cooler". Ok, but not really anything worth recommending. The nude sex scenes with William H. Macy sort of creeped me out. I really liked Maria Bello, though. Wish they used her as the lead in more movies. I didn't know Macy was married to Felicity Huffman in real life...just found that out. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?
| | |
| Are the scenes with Macy any worse than Jack Nicholson's backside in Something's Gotta Give? |

I watched Sky Captain & ....a few nights ago and gave my opinion of it on that thread. Ditto Vanity Fair-which was a waste of my $18.00 and I am still trying to figure out why I bought it! Mary & other readers - I highly recommend reading the book, the subtitle is A Novel Without A Hero and Thackeray has a subtle wit. Pat |

| The Last Seduction which was a complete bore. I enjoy noir, but this just didn't work. The femme fetale was beautiful but not very seductive IMHO. She uses sex to reel in her quarry, but never captured their souls. So I guess what I'm saying is that a true seduction captures body and soul, and, for me, this one didn't. Of course a guy might respond differently to this sortta hot movie. I also wathched High Fidelity and enjoyed it much more than I expected to. Of course, I love any sort of top 5 list, so I just ate that part up. |

| "Maria Full of Grace" on DVD. Recommend it highly, although Catalina Sandino Moreno may be up for Best Actress because of a weak field. |

Have seen Vanity Fair (my comments on that thread) Have seen Shall we Dance? Stanley Tucci should do more comedy! Cellular was ok. No more no less. Wanna see Maria Full of Grace and ALL of the Oscar nominees which have not reached us yet! |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| Hum, "Notebook" is so so? Well it came today via Netflix so I had better at least give it a try. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| Bill, I really liked "The Notebook". I mean, it is a Sappy Romance Drama, but it's a lot better than the Meg Ryan "Sleepless in Seattle" type movie. I thought for it's genre, it was done well. Let us know what you think. and beth, I wasn't lucky enough to see Jack's bum in "Something's Got to Give" (LOL), but I'm still having nightmare's about Macy!!! It was more the mood mixed with his nudity, than his actual physique. Just not a pleasant memory. |

| I know it's not out on video yet and it just came out in the theatres in late January but I really want to see "Alone in the Dark" but ONLY on DVD. I don't want to pay full price for a movie that a lot of people are saying is the WORST movie of the year (and the year's only started!). I just want to see if it's as bad as everyone says it is. Anybody seen this movie? Better yet, is it still playing ANYWHERE? I think it was in the theatres here for a week or so. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?
| | |
| I've never even heard of it. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| Never heard of it either. Saw "The Notebook" last weekend and thought it was a wonderfully romantic film. The loves scenes were cut up too badly to really make sense, but actually they could have that those parts out. Based on the deleted scenes the DVD showed, I guess they wanted to keep the whole thing innocent and too much of the love scenes would have compromised that. Otherwise, I loved the movie and found James Garner's acting delightfully surprising. I also saw "The Badge" with Billy Bob Thornton. Did anyone ever see that film? I just love that man! |

| Here's a link to the entry for the movie on RottenTomatoes.com What this site does is gather a lot of reviews and, based on how many positive/negative reviews a movie gets, a tomato-meter rating is given (out of a possible 100). "Along in the Dark" got about 1%. I think "The Incredibles" got 97%. |

| Dynomutt, I found the reviews so bad they were laughable. Has anyone seen "Being Julia" with Annette Bening? It just opened here in my city. Wondering if I should go. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?
| | |
| I haven't seen "Being Julia" but I've heard nothing but good things about it! And yes, the reviews just trashed that "Alone in the Dark" movie so badly that they WERE hilarious! I'm thinking "Alone in the Dark" will join such classics as "Plan 9 From Outer Space" ..... Too bad -- it was such a good video game .... |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| Vawoodnymph, Bill started a thread back in November about "Being Julia." He really like it. Here's the link...Being Julia |

| "A Price Above Rubies" was recommended by gandbb. And gandbb was right, Renee Zellweger carried the day. Maybe a **. |

| I agree with Carla, "The Notebook" was really good. And will go so far as to say a great, great love story. Recommend it highly! |

| I saw Million Dollar Baby over the weekend. It was the last of the Oscar nominees I hadn't seen. Wow, it was even better than I expected after hearing all the hype. Great story, and so well done. The acting was outstanding. I didn't think anyone could touch Jamie Foxx but I would have a tough time choosing between Jamie and Clint Eastwood. I think Hilary Swank deserves the Oscar this year. Morgan Freeman was quite good but not as good as I expected. I would vote it Best Picture. |

| I saw The Sea Inside over the weekend. Important issue movie, stellar performances, gorgeous cinematography -- but I cannot say that I liked it |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| I just rented "Head in the Clouds" and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't resist a love story set in the Europe of WW II. Charleze Theron and Penelope Cruse are in it, as well as Stuart Townsend. Not a happy ending, but given the hubris of the protagonist and the times, it was inevitable. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?
| | |
| "Boys Don't Cry" with Hillary swank. Please don't waste your time with this one. I wanted to see the Academy Award winning performance, but turned it off after 25 minutes. Ugh! |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| Watched "An American President" for the umteenth time. Loved it as always. Something I never thought about before was they had an all-star cast in a love story. You don't normally see that unless the love story is by-product of a more intense storyline. Also saw "Houseboat" with Cary Grant and Sophia Loren. Cute classic I had never seen before. |

| Hi - I'm new here and enjoying reading many of your posts and hope its okay to just start right in.......... Over the weekend I watched Walk In The Clouds with Keanu Reeves, a film from 1995. Kind of a sweet, sappy, love story/fairy tale. I just loved it! It's fairly predictable but the scenery was lovely and Keanu Reeves is so nice to look at! It was a great movie to watch during some quiet time on a rainy/slushy day during a hectic wedding weekend at a hotel! A week ago we watched Bourne Supremacy - big time loser in my opinion. |

| "Secrets & Lies", directed by Mike Leigh. Thanks Phillip for the recommendation! Similiar to "Vera Drake"; a family under the microscope. Wonderful acting by all, especially Brenda Blethyn. **** |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?

| "Lumumba", a true story of the Belgium Congo becoming an independent nation, and the outside forces of the Cold War at work. Very sad; only for someone with specific interest in this period of time in Africa. Very good acting by Eriq Ebouaney (Lumumba). |

| We rented Hidalgo which I thought was very good. I wasn't expecting much, my son picked it out and I picked The Village. He picked a much better movie than I did. He also picked I Robot and I picked Shall We Dance two weekends ago. They were both good. I didn't know that I Robot was based on an Isaac Asimov story. Shall We Dance was better than the original Japanese version, I thought-- which was surprising because I don't usually like remakes. |

I watched Timeline last night. It wasn't as bad as I was led to believe. I had read the book by Michael Crichton some time ago and I think the people that adapted the book to the movie didn't really set up the audience to understand the time travel storyline. If I hadn't read the book I would have been lost! Like a lot of the Stephen King books, Crichton's books don't always translate well to the screen-OR-the people making the movie just don't do a good job of it! Pat |

| Rented RAY over the weekend (one of the only nominated films I've seen, much to my chagrin). It was INCREDIBLE. I am just in awe at Jamie Fox's many talents. Musician, singer and actor. Not many like him out there. His performance was magical. I also now have a better appreciation of the man who was Ray Charles Robinson. Next on my list is Motorcycle Diaries. Anyone seen it? |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?
| | |
| Clairabelle, we are dying to see Motorcycle Diaries, but haven't yet. A friend of mine who saw Ray thought that Jamie Foxx did a great job when he was singing and rocking back and forth, but didn't think his acting performance had much heart or soul. Just a comment, I haven't seen it yet myself, but I'd like to. Pat, I loved Timeline the book, I actually don't think I want to see it as a movie! Maybe you know what I mean. Although you said it wasn't as bad as you were led to believe, I think I'd rather keep all the pictures in my mind, rather than see them on the screen. |
RE: February 2005 - what are you watching?
| | |
| woodie, please rent "Ray" and share your opinion. I hope your friend has not soured you on the idea. Jamie Foxx was so great in that movie, and it gave him the opportunity to show just how multitalented he is. He was Ray Charles from head to toe from his body language to the way he walked to the way he communicated, even the voice itself. I read someone say that Leonardo DiCaprio was good as Howard Hughes because they forgot it was just a movie. Well, I can't vouch for that because I did not know and never saw Howard Hughes. However, I have seen Ray Charles on many occasions, and I had to keep reminding myself that Jamie Foxx was not Ray - it's just a movie. Everyone I spoke with, everyone here in the Circle Theater Forum who has seen the film, and any mention of the movie on television absolutely raves about Jamie Foxx's performance. We can't all be wrong, and as a matter of fact Jamie Foxx JUST won the Oscar for his performance. |

| I saw "Motorcycle Diaries" last fall (September?). It played in one theater in the entire Pittsburgh area for 2 weeks and was gone. It is not political as one would think. 2 guys want to see South America, and the cheapest transportion is a motorcycle. Although the movie might be used to find insight into Che's and Alberto's beginings of political thinking; what gave them direction. Well worth watching. |

| "The Letter", (1940) (Black&White) Based on Somerset Maugham's novel and directed by William Wyler, starring Bette Davis in one of her nastiest roles. Very entertaining; not sure if it would be considered a classic; likely with Bette Davis. Tried it because of Somerset Maugham, one of my favorite authors. Recommend. |

| Rented "Something The Lord Made" with Alan Rickman and Mos Def. I don't have cable TV, so I never knew of this true story about the first open heart surgery, aired on HBO. I rented it because I love Alan Rickman so much. He and Mos Def were fantastic. In the "Special Features" portion, someone commented "They channeled Dr. Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas." It was a poignant and very affecting film I kept watching over and over all weekend and cried each and every time. They also mentioned that although they tried to make it into a feature film, no one was interested because of general public expectations. Something about the public doesn't want that kind of movie these days. Then, after it was made and aired on HBO, Hollywood regretted not making it a feature. So glad HBO jumped on it. PBS has a documentary of the story called "Partners of the Heart." |
