Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

Chris Rock is hosting the Oscars. I am totally lost. The Oscars are a classy, top notch event. In my opinion, Chris Rock is the exact opposite of that description. I can't stand watching this guy for more than 5 minutes, let alone a 3 hour show. For me, this guy doesn't just cross the line, but rather plows over it. I'm very hard to offend, but this guy does it to me on a regular basis. I don't get how they can deny a sweetheart like Robin Williams a shot at it, but they will let Chris Rock, Mr. "Hi, I'm angry about everything" host such a great show. Maybe he's changed since he last persuaded me to change the channel, buy I'm not holding my breath.

I think he is funny. He says that since his mother will be watching he will remember not to curse. We shall see.

I imagine they will have a delay of a few seconds on the broadcast just in case they need to bleep anything!

I sense not too many actually want to host this event. Unless they need a new-found gain in popularity. I liked Billy Crystal last year, probably one of just a few that did. Whoopi Goldberg was enough for us to wait for the morning paper to see the results. Hope Chris Rock works out. Hate to admit it, but I never heard of him before. I must be living in a cave or somewhere else.

I confess I had him confused with someone else when I said on another thread that I liked him. I have to wonder if his selection is Hollywood giving the finger to the FCC? Let's face it, the Academy Awards are sancrosact and accountable to no one.

Personally, I'd rather see Chris Tucker host - he's funny.

RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

I think that the dignity the Oscar's used to imply is gone. I seldom watch them anymore. Gone are the great days of Bob(I'll never win an Oscar)Hope.

I had read that they chose Chris Rock because it was time to be edgy and irreverent and all that crap. At least Chris Rock won't be singing a la Billy Crystal. In an interview, he said, "If you find me singing Broadway style about Sideways, then pull me off the stage."

RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

I don't like Chris Rock - his acting or his comedy. Hopefully, he will pull some class, character, and real humor out of a hat. Perhaps he will surprise me. It comforts me to know the show has writers and choreographers.

I'm rather fond of Steve Martin, myself.

Who is Chris Rock-I am thinking of the young black detective who is secretly married to Danny Glover's daughter in the Lethal Weapon movies?
If that is who it is-he has a very irritating personality IMHO although I haven't seen him as a stand alone comic-from what I have seen I wouldn't like him!

I had never heard of Chris Rock either, so I asked my sons and they both said, "Yeah, he's funny!" So this must be one of those generational things.

Actually, I think Robin Williams would not be a good choice. Robin Williams is really talented and he can be very funny but with Robin Williams, it is always about Robin Williams. Just watch him when he is on with David Letterman or Jay Leno (not that I would ever, ever watch Jay!) and you can see that Robin Williams just has to dominate the stage. Dave Letterman is a better comedian than Robin Williams but when Robin is on Late Night, Robin just goes off on his rifts and imitations and never does develop any ensemble type stuff with Dave. In many of his movies, including the gut wrenchingly awful Patch Adams, Robin does not act with his fellow actors but just looks into the camera and hogs the spotlight.
If he hosts the Oscars, the evening will be about one thing: Robin Williams.

Does everyone know/remember him?

Is the Oscars on radio? Then we might turn the sound down and listen on radio.

RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?-hurt

Yikes, Reggie. Just hit me where it hurts-right in the big red nose. I absolutely enjoy Robin Williams. I loved Patch Adams and will never forget Awakenings, Bicentennial Man, Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting, Jack, Toys, The Birdcage, Being Human, .......................... I loved these movies and for Robin Williams all the more, even those that weren't especially well made. I know he acts crazy on talk shows, but I always thought he did that because it's what people expect as well as avoiding having to divulge too much of himself. I thought it was weird that he divorced is wife and married the nanny LOL

 o
RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

Leno wouldn't be a bad choice for host.

 o
RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

Chris Rock? Maybe next year Janet Jackson?:)

 o
RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

Dave Letterman only did it once. Anyone know why he refuses now?

 o
RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

Letterman bombed as far as I remember. Since he was a "tv" guy in a "movie" world, the audience did not receive him well. Remember that stupid bit, "Uma...Oprah". He was horrible.

 o
RE: Chris Rock hosting Oscars?

Horrible? Seems a strong word to use...Johnny Carson was also a TV guy in a movie world and no one minded. Letterman is certainly not the first to 'cut-up' the actors in the audience. I guess he's just not as likeable. It's wierd, I really liked Bill Crystal as host, he's funny, and classy, likeable, but I remember reading a lot of complaints about him being too boring, or 'old hat'...and I also liked Steve Martin. Seems they're doing the opposite of the Super Bowl people this year, going from rappers and Janet Jackson to Paul McCartney.
