"The Life of David Gale", Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet, Laura Linney.

A very good who done it. With a real twist in the end.

RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Bill I enjoyed that one and thought it was better than the reviews led me to believe.

I haven't watched anything recently with the exception of Timeline which wasn't that bad either!

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

The Triplettes of Belleville. Great alternative animation feature. Oh, and I plan on getting my dirty mitts on the DVD of The Incredibles when it comes out. I also plan on watching Cold Mountain sometime this month.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Hitchcock's 'The Trouble with Harry' has just gone back to the DVD service; Jean Cocteau's 'La Belle et la Bete' is on the mantlepiece, waiting for a night when everyone's home! It's one of my top all-time favourites, stunningly beautiful, but man and daughters have never seen it. Also on the mantlepiece, 'Angel' season 2 disc 3. It's not been as good as season 1, but still better than a lot of other telly.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Saw Motorcycle Diaries the other night. I struggle with having to stare at the screen to read subtitles because of my dry eye syndrome :-( but it was worth it. It was good, interesting to watch the 2 young men go through life's changes as a result of their journey together. Makes me want to take a road trip ;-D Oh, and I've been hearing that instrumental theme on radio AOL a lot lately, and I love it!

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Thank you Bill for the heads up on David Gale. It's one I've had in mind for a long time, but never seem to get around to it and I don't know anyone who has seen it.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

"The Grudge" - surprisingly good! Very eerie, atmospheric and well done. I really enjoyed it and went into it not expecting that much.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Collateral
Goldiggers of 1935
Man on Fire

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Flight of the Phoenix (forgettable, except for Giovanni Ribisi, wonderfully weird as usual)

Motorcycle Diaries (very refreshing). It was in Spanish with English subtitles. The first part of the trip was funny (that beat-up motorcyle!) and it was very interesting to see how they essentially 'grew up' by the end, through their experience in the leper colony. Fuser's (Guevera) speech at the going away party was just a taste of his charisma, and his integrity. The part about the American dollars was also revealing. And man, when he had those asthma attacks, he sure had me wheezing along with him!

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I watched "Shall We Dance" last night and enjoyed it although I felt that it was missing something. Still, a worthwhile two hours with an appealing cast.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Forgot, I also watched Monster for the first time. What an awesome performance by Charlize Theron!!!!!

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

"Collateral", with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.

Will Tom Cruise ever grow up? Why does he always have to be some macho shoot em' up guy? His ego is in the trees on this one. I hadn't realized he is so short.

Jamie Foxx was great in his part of the taxi cab driver. I have a feeling Foxx is going to be around for a long time.

* or **

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Collateral, ugh. (Couldn't rent Ray, all out). Neither one of us liked it at all. However, Jamie Foxx is terrific.

Kitchen Stories tonight, looking forward to it.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Kitchen Stories? Let us know what you think.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

A documentary The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill which is delightful! It has been playing the film festvals for a couple of years now and is just now going out into wider, but probably not wide, release. A warm funny film - highly recommended.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Last night on TV it was "Rocky".

Tonight it will be "Rocky 2", and so on, until the last is played.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Amelie... It was a pretty cute flick.. And visually pleasing...

Tonight I will watch Lagaan...

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Ohh I forgot to add..

Phillip.. I am going out on a limb and thinking you got the Richard Gere/JLo version of Shall We Dance?... If so, you should rent the original Japanese movie.... It is absolutely wonderfully devine.... It is one of my favorites....

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Didn't get to watch Kitchen Stories the other night as planned, maybe tonight.

Last night DH brought home Ray so that's what we saw. We both really liked it. Thought Jamie Foxx gave a wonderful performance, but we just thought the whole movie was terrific.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I did not like Lagaan very much..... The music was very pretty.... But the movie didn't do anything for me...

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Finally got to watch Kitchen Stories. We both enjoyed it a lot. A charming, silly (in some ways) film that makes your heart smile. The premise is one of those ridiculous research studies that the Swedes did in circa 1950 and the relationship that develops between the man being observed and the observer. It's slow moving, not a real firecracker, but it really creeps up on you and its sweet and poignant.

I hope someone else sees this because I'd like another opinion on something in the film!

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Well I got carried away when I said I would watch Rocky through #5. 3 1/2 is all I could handle, as "Rocky IV" became just plain silly.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

The Cooler

Now I can finally say - that is 2 hours of my life I will never get back. Good performances, interesting concept, boring execution.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

"Abigail's Party", devised by Mike Leigh. (1977)

I believe devised means taken from a stage play and adapted for cinema.

Another wonderful Mike Leigh movie. Very down to basic acting, with the minimum of props.

Recommend it highly!

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Now Chris,
If you would have listened to my "non recommendation" for "The Cooler" in the February thread you wouldn't have wasted all that time :-) Did you get creeped out over the nude scenes with Macy like I did?

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Watched Satan Never Sleeps with William Holden and Clifton Webb. This was one of, if not the, last movies Webb made. Typical '60's ending. An OK movie with better than average acting.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Carla, Yes. You are so right! I did listen, but I forgot it was in my Netflix queue, and when it came ....

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I watched a very old version of "Anna Karenina", with the inimitable Paul Scofield (as cuckolded husband), Jacqueline Bisset as Anna, and Christopher Reeve as Vronsky. I think it was made in the early Nineteen-eighties. I thought it rather well done, on the whole.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

"Grown Ups" (1980), another Mike Leigh movie.

This one is not quite as good as previous Mike Leigh films. Maybe we are watching too many in one stretch?

The talk is very hard to understand. I call it East Ender accent. I am sure this is not correct. I do have a right to critize the accent as my 4 grandparents are from England, and arrived here as teens. Salford, Kidderminster, Cardiff, and Liverpool.

Acting good as usual, with a young Brenda Blethyn.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Tried watching Minority Report last night, but couldn't get into it.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I bought a couple of DVD's at Costco this week and last night really enjoyed the first disc of the BBC version of Vanity Fair which was Parts 1, 2 & 3.
Anyone that liked the Reese Witherspoon version-I recommend you watch this one to see how different it is and much closer to the Thackeray book!
The acting is so good, the English have such great character actors (and I am not saying that because I came from there-honest!)
Tonight I will watch the 2nd disc.

I also bought another in the Horatio Hornblower series which is another English series that I highly recommend, but you need to start from the beginnings of Horatio.
If you enjoyed Master & Commander you will love Hornblower!

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

beth, I too watched Minority Report for awhile and just couldn't get into it. It was kind of boring. So instead I watched something called "The Secret Laughter of Women." It was okay, very slow moving. It starred Colin Firth and Nia Long, and is about a Nigerian single woman with a son living with her mother in the Nigerian section somewhere in France. They keep their customs very intact, even though apparently they're "exiles." They so do not approve of their women being with white men, which is seen as a stain on their honor. Colin Firth plays a writer, he and Nia Long fall in love against all odds, etc. etc.

The movie wasn't so good, in fact if it weren't for Colin Firth and Nia Long, it would play very much like, for example, an independent film shot in Atlanta... The difference really good film actors make! I think Colin and Nia did this movie for practically nothing, and I don't think it's very well known (I couldn't even find it under imdb or rotten tomatoes). My girlfriend let me borrow it because she knows I'm a big Colin Firth fan.

Aside from that I'm getting ready to watch "The Door in the Floor."

RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

We just rented a bunch of things. One was the latest with Christian Slater where he is a headhunter, but a stalker one. It was pretty good, as I do enjoy looking at him, but maybe not Oscar worthy. Then we watched Mean Girls. Dh has a huge thing for Tina Fey, so I know he enjoyed seeing her. I did not know that the film was gonna have lots of slapstick type humor, but we really laughed and enjoyed it. Then we watched something REALLY weird and sorta good, a thriller/sci-fi kind of. I say sorta, as the imdb reviews that I read, lots of folks seemed to hate the film. There were a lot of holes and times where you'd be frustrated, thinking that things wouldn't happen that way if you had control of things. It was "The Forgotten", with Julianne Moore. For those who have not seen it, I will say very little, so as not to ruin it for you. Thankfully I never saw a preview on TV, or I would have been bummed. Reason?? Some folks at imdb said that from seeing the previews, they knew some of what to expect, so no surprises. For us knowing nothing, holy cow is my reaction!! Basic premise is that Julian Moore is grieving over the supposed death of her son. Meanwhile her hubby (Anthony Edwards), says she never had a son. Then it gets weird. But, the way I judge a thriller type flick, is "did I jump or have the crap scared out of me?". If so, then four stars! Well we both jumped about four times, and I mean really jumped, and one point hit me so hard that I actually started tearing up and looking away from the screen. I don't think I've been that shaken since seeing The Exorcist. I think you should try it, but watch it without reading up on it, so you can get the joy of pooping your pants! lol

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I just watched "Far From Heaven". Guess I was expecting something different. It seemed very contrived to me. It may have had some serious messages about social acceptances, but putting them in this "Leave it to Beaver" type story just didn't seem to mix well with me. Just felt like they were trying too hard to manipulate the viewer into how life "was" and how it really "should have been".

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I just watched "My Favorite Wife" with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Now I've remembered why I love Cary Grant all over again. I found this great site, The Ultimate Cary Grant Pages. It's just too bad I don't have cable.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Thanks, graylight. I just spent some time looking around the site. I'm glad you put me on to it.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

"Rumpole of the Bailey", old TV programs that are fun to see again. 3 to a disk.

I had forgotted how sharp Horace Rumpole really is. He just plays with the prosecution, always a step or two ahead.

Wonderful acting by all.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Bill - I love Rumpole! My DH once bought me a sweatshirt that said, "She Who Shall Be Obeyed" across the front!

I haven't rented anything lately, but since there is nothing on TV worth watching tonight I will probably watch one of my DVD's but haven't decided which one yet.

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Laura Croft and The Cradle of Life - just the sort of brainless adventure I was in the mood for. But I was a tad bit disappointed.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Saw "Hitch" tonight at the theater.

Wow! What acting from Will Smith.

Lots of laughs; a feel good movie.

For all.

****

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I decided to watch my new Horatio Hornblower DVD's.
These two DVD's are the 3rd in the series and called The New Adventures.
I just love this series, it is so well acted by everyone involved and gives us a little history about Napoleon too. Great sea battle scenes and the added tidbit that the Irish sided with Napoleon rather than the English.

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Rented 'Control'. Ray Liotta and Willem Dafoe. An interesting twist to a known scenario. Liotta was more convincing as the villain that was Dafoe in the role of the doctor. I liked this movie, except for the ending which was a predictable letdown. Darn! I hate that when movies fall flat at the end. Shades of The Abyss! lol

I'm still waiting for Liotta to do another romantic movie like Corrina, Corrina, in which he was wonderfully vulnerable.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Well I'm still on my Cary Grant phase. Just watched "The Awful Truth" and will soon take a look at "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse" Why don't they make movies like they used to?

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Is anyone but me dumb enough to watch Spring Break Shark Attack? I love all the disaster movies --- The Deadly Bees, Tornado, Earthquake, etc. :)

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I just picked up Shrek 2. I haven't watched it yet but I imagine I'll get around to it sometime before April! (I hope)

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

If you liked the first one Dyno, you will #2!

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I watched one of my all time favorites last night. I think I wore out the video and recently purchased the DVD - Lawrence of Arabia.
The music is memorable and what a cast!
Peter O'Toole was sooooo handsome...I didn't finish watching because it is a long movie & it was getting late and so when the Intermission popped up I decided that was a good time to pause and finish watching another night...
Of course tonight is 24!

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Watched one I never saw, and due to previous discussions on Robert Duvall - 'Tommorrow'... very good. I ached for Fentry when the relatives took the child away from him, when they didn't care about him at all, they just wanted their 'possession'. It was a subtle reminder of how non-talkative people are often unjustly thought of as slow or ignorant. Good idea to make it in black and white.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Last night I signed up for a free trial with Netflix. I know some of you use it. Are you pleased? I hope it works for me.

Paula, based on your post I ordered Tomorrow. Also ordered Monster and Aileen so I can participate in the discussion. I've seen Monster once and was impressed.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Thanks beth, I like the convenience of having movies delivered fairly quickly, they're here within a day or two after email notification from Netflix. I like to be able to view them on my schedule. And no hurry to return them, just don't forget they're laying around the house! ;-D

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Sherwood, "L. of Arabia" is one of my all-time favorite films. David Lean was director, right?

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Yes, David Lean...

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Robert Duvall - 'Tommorrow'
I agree about this movie. I think it is a "haunting" movie and Duvall did a splendid job. I haven't seen it for years but I remember its impact.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Hard Labor", another Mike Leigh movie (1973).

This one is not a comedy, and difficult to understand. The under class do like to slur their words together.:)

The theme is centered around a working woman that is abused by her whole family; sexism and the class system.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

My DD is here visiting this week and I couldn't believe that she had never seen Kiss Me Kate-one of my favorite musicals, so we watched it yesterday afternoon.

Tonight I will be watching House of Sand & Fog (finally) as it is one of my NetFlix movies that arrived yesterday. The TV season (for me) is about over so I thought this would be a good time to sign up and get caught up on all the movies I have missed these last few months.

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I watched an oldie, "Charade" with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. The Paris scenery was wonderful and the entire film so refreshing.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I enjoyed Being Julia-my 1st NetFlix movie and thought it quite brave of Annette Benning to allow herself to be filmed showing her age! (After all youth is everything in Hollywood!).

We watched The House of Sand & Fog on Sunday night and I realized that the wife & son (of Ben Kingsley) are the same two that are in 24 this season, I wondered if they really are related? It was quite a sad ending...

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Pat, so glad you enjoyed Annette Bening. I secretly rooted for her to recieve the Oscar. (I was out voted at home).

And good to hear you have Netflix.

Judy Dench in "Iris" let the cameras come close for every wrinkle and crease. She was saying, "I am proud of myself, I have nothing to hide, no matter what the mirror tells." Quite an on camera statement I thought.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

"Nuts in May" (1976), another Mike Leigh movie; for TV.

Quite a plain, elementary, down to basics movie.

The theme is a social commentary on the tensions among economic and social classes in British society.

For the hardcore Mike Leigh fan.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Bill, I did a quick read through of this thread and haven't seen you mention Mike Leigh's "High Hopes" yet. It's my favorite of his films, so far. I wonder what you will think of it -- or what you already think of it, if you've seen it and I missed your comments.

I also like "Naked," sort of. I mean it's not an easy film to watch because...well, parts are frankly disgusting (don't want to give anything away), but what a tour de force for David Thewlis!

Of course, I haven't seen "Vera Drake" yet so my ranking of Mike Leigh's films is subject to change.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Frieda, Thanks for the "High Hopes" tip. I have watched 5 or 6 Mike Leigh movies recently, thanks to Netflix.

I am about to go on leave, so as not to run out of his movies.

"Vera Drake" is so good; I have seen it twice. And would go again if it was local.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I have Vera Drake in my "Queue"!

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I saw Million Dollar Baby this weekend and, I must say, it was DAMNED good. And I sure wouldn't want to meet Hilary Swank in a dark alley -- that left hook of hers is NASTY!

Highly recommended movie. It deserved the Oscars it received.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

I saw Remains of the Day two nights ago, I had never seen it, but the discussion of Sense & Sensibility got me into English and Emma Thompson... I put Howard's End in my queue, as well at Wit. Remains was wonderful!

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Paula I saw Wit was listed, I had never heard of it & I am a big fan of Emma Thompson, so I think I will add it my list!
I have Closer & the new Bridgit Jones movie coming for this weekend....my DD said that she had heard that Closer was very sexually explicit-anyone see it?

Pat

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Just returned Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell) to the library. Fun, entertaining film.

Also finally got around to seeing Million dollar baby which was very good, and Hitch which was funny and cute.

 o
RE: March 2005, What Are You Watching?

Rainy weekend coming up: I've just checked out "Closer", the new Bridget Jones, as well as "Stage Beauty."
