Does anyone watch Survivor?

I have made fun of my kids for years for watching reality shows. I got hooked on Survivor because there's nothing else on at that time that I care to watch. I thought I should at least try to figure out the attraction of the genre. Now I'm eating my words.

Follow-Up Postings:

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I forgot to watch the last one. A neighbor woman is on the one now.

I wanted to say girl, but she is in her early 20's.:)

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Can't get into that series although DS's love it. To me it is too staged. IMHO of course

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Bill, which one is your neighbor?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I love Survivor!

Bill, do tell - which one is she?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Yea, Phillip! How long are they going to let Ulong continue as a "tribe?" I'm rooting for Ian or Tom. How 'bout you?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I can't believe they haven't merged yet and I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow night.

My favorite is probably Stephanie. I liked Tom in the beginning but now he seems arrogant and a little too perfect so he's down on my list now.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Well, Phillip, your lady is still in the game. I can't believe they sent her back to her camp --- a "team" of 1. I wonder how long they'll leave it that way. Stephanie sure does think smart. Bobby Jon didn't stand a chance.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Survivor was really good through the "All Stars". Although heavily edited, the series, through the All Stars episodes, at least had intersting and colorful people in it such as Rich Hatch, Heidi and Jenna, Shi-Ann et al. But after the "All Stars", Survivor became mind numbingly dull and the characters in it are all dull and uninteresting. How many times can Jeff Probst do the "merger" surprise and host the games for the reward of coca cola and other product placements without boring the audience to tears? And how many times can they do that dopey surprise family visit thing? It is hardly a surprise since the family visits are arranged long before the series is filmed and everyone knows there will be a family visit. And the cast members act as if they have been sent to Devil's Island for 5 years. Heck, 18 year old kids in the army go to Afghanistan or Iraq for 18 months and that is a real survival test.
I think it's fair to say that this once great series has simply run out of gas.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Amber Brkich.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

AMBER????!!!! Oh my God, not the girl married to Rob! Boo! Hiss! I can't stand those two - that's why I'm not watching Amazing Race this season because they are on it. LOL

Poor Stephanie - still surviving! Do you think they will put her one-on-one with one of the guys next week?

Poor Bobby Jon, the last Alabama guy! Oh well, I guess that proves that the old southern boys are not that tough. hehe

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

That probably applies to all the southern guys except you, Phillip :)

Reggie, you made a good point about it being the same old, same old. Maybe that's why they're doing this to Steph. Will they pit her against one of Koror's team one-on-one, again and again? Will they give Ulong some of Koror's people? Will they leave Steph. and pit Koror's people against each other in the challenges?

This is only the second one I've watched, so it's not boring to me yet.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I didn't know Amber was such an unpopular contestant.

I might have to move out of the neighborhood. Can't be seen with the likes of her.:)

Everyone is guessing as to how long Amber and Rob stay married. I think when they become boring and spend all their winnings, they will split.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Beth, I wouldn't last very long on that show! :)

Bill, is she still living in your neighborhood or did she move when she won the million? Actually, she wasn't that bad, it was just the company she keeps.

I wish they would go ahead and merge because it is a little boring the way it is going right now. But I've seen every season of the show except for the first one and this one is one of the best.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I'm with Phillip. It does get repititive with Koror winning consistently, but it's something that we haven't really seen before on Survivor: one team that has completely dominated the game. And it's the team that doesn't really look good on paper, as they were discussing amongst themselves on last night's episode.

I just think it's fascinating to watch how people will interact when put into that situation. Having to live with a group of people you're going to end up competing against--for one million dollars.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Too bad Koror kept winning. There are a lot of people on that tribe who seem to be flying under the radar.

Maybe they will have Stephanie and someone from Koror be tribe leaders and pick new tribes. That would be interesting.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Yeah, it's like Coby has been saying all along - most of the girls on the Koror tribe do absolutely nothing and probably would have been gone long ago if their tribe had been going to tribal council.

And Janu (the Vegas showgirl) has been a big disappointment. She started out so good but has since become a major wimp.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I like Coby much more than I thought I would. He's really turned out to be a good player. I agree, Phillip, Koror should get rid of most of their girls --- but, would they be the first to go?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Exactly, Phillip!

I couldn't be on Koror cause Coby and I would be gossiping all the time! LOL

But what's with these people who wear bikinis to challenges? Can't they wear something that will stay on?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

YES! Coby needs to ditch those bikinis!

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

One of the striking things about the last two Survivors is how uninteresting the characters are. If you watched the early Survivors, you can remember vividly the cast of characters in each one. Survivor Thailand had Big Ted, Shi-Ann and that porno guy who won. In Survivor Panama, you can remember Heidi Strobel, Jenna Rob and the others. But can anyone even remember who won the last Survivor?
After a while, the games for the right to win a product that is being shilled on the program gets boring. And we know at the end the last three people will make ribbons to the others (as if they are dead), and then Jeff will take them to a cave for the final game in which they will sweat heavily and eventually two will weaken.
It has, sad to say, just run its course.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I was trying to forget the last season because I was very upset over the winner. I think his name was Chris. I remember Twila most of all, the second place winner - the hard working, tough as nails single mother who should have won but was plagued by swearing on the Bible or something like that - it was all really dumb.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I liked Sarge, who was voted off rather early.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Negative.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

An article from today's USA TODAY:

Can one person make a tribe? Survivor: Palau, the 10th season of CBS' hit reality show, is about to find out.

In the middle of an unprecedented turn of events, one of the two tribes battling for survival, the Ulong, is down to its final member.

Week after week, the humiliated Ulongs have lost a physical or mental contest, forcing them to vote one member after another off the South Pacific island. After 21 days and an original team of nine, Ulong has only a solo representative: athletic underdog Stephenie LaGrossa, 25, a pharmaceutical sales rep from Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, the eight members of rival Koror sit happily gorging on shark, enjoying their comparatively luxurious shelter (they won it after a bathroom-building reward challenge) and not worrying about drinking water (they won a 55-gallon drum's worth along with Crest toothpaste, Scope mouthwash and Pantene shampoo).

"The cliffhanger to last week — what you are going to see for the first time ever — is one person returning to camp alone," Survivor host Jeff Probst says of tonight's episode. "Stephenie doesn't have anybody to help her. If she can't find food longer than a day, she's in trouble."

"I'm so scared," LaGrossa said in last week's previews for the show (8 ET/PT) titled "I Will Not Give Up."

In responding to criticism that the show was getting too predictable, Survivor's producers decided from the start that the tribes would not merge at the point they have in the past, Probst says. That led to the lone-camper situation.

Bobby Jon Drinkard, 27, a waiter from Troy, Ala., and the last Ulong to be booted, says he expected the tribes to combine on Day 12. "Instead, " he says, it became "a pity party."

He adds: "You know conditions are going to be hard, but they're a lot harder than you imagine. Day 1, you think how grateful you are to get the chance to be on the show. But by Day 2 or 3, you're thinking, 'Why did I do this?' "

Probst, who won't confirm that a merge takes place tonight, says, "The risk if you don't merge is that one tribe decimates the other, and you have this horrible situation, and that's exactly what happened. What we anticipated as being a disaster turned into one of the greatest dramas we've had."

Among other "firsts" this season:

• The game started with 20 contestants instead of the usual 16 or 18. Two were eliminated as the tribes were formed.

• The contestants received no information or tools to start.

• The challenges have been more physical, many testing underwater stamina.

Survivor: Palau is consistently a top 10 show, with an average 21 million viewers. At least one person is voted off each week; the lone survivor wins $1 million. The finale airs May 15.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Yes, I watch Survivor. Can't help myself. Tom is now my TV boyfriend. My favorites never ever win, however. I was seriously on board with the Rupert love, until the cabin building incident during All-Stars. I loved the manical architect guy who lost to Jenna a couple of seasons ago. I rooted for Twila last season. Last season was boring because they got rid of all the male eye candy first thing. If you guys can have babes in bikinis, I want buff studs to look at. This season, I have to like the fact that age and wisdom beat youth and beauty to a pulp!

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Amen on that age and wisdom thing, Chris. Do you think that's what makes them function so much better as a team, rather than as individuals? Or is it just the individual personalities?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

The worst Survivor winner was that Brian guy who won Survivor Thailand. He behaved just like the soft core porno actor that he was in real life. One of the best Survivor series was the one in Panama with the babelicious Jenna and Heidi and I think they also had that bible thumping chick from South Carolina, a good mix.
One of the most overrated Survivor guys was that Johnny Fairplay. He was always preening for the cameras, like a minor player in a show who demands constant attention.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Wow, Coby's gone! That was really a shock to me. I liked Coby at first, but he started acting like a jerk. I won't miss his attitude, but he's sure not the one I would have voted off.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Coby's cattiness did him in last night. I mean, what was he thinking? I think he wanted to be voted off, otherwise he wouldn't have done something so stupid. I knew when he called Stephanie over in front of the others that his days were numbered.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I guess I didn't think his attitude had gone quite far enough for him to be voted off. It seems to have gotten really bad in only the last couple of episodes. I really thought Janu would be the first to go.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

It looks like she may be next!

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Beth, I think the beaten tribe overthought everything as individuals. After Yolanda was voted off, no one ever stepped up to make one decision or suggestion. They were totally leaderless. Everyone was afraid any attempt to lead would put a target on their own back, so no one stepped up. I'm beginning to think Steph may win the whole thing.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I would be happy with Stephenie, Tom or Ian.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

You have to wonder about these supposedly private conversations that the cast members have in which two or three get together "privately" to plot strategy and who will get voted off. How is that they can sneak off, cameramen in tow, to plot strategy and their fellow cast members don't know about it?. Somehow, it does not seem plausible.
Amber and Boston Rob are now in the Amazing Race, becoming caricatures of themselves.
I liked Vasuvia. She won the program and then went back to her high tech job in the Valley.
For most boring winner, you would have to say Sandra from Seattle.
Most entertaining non winner, you would have to say Heidi Strobel.
Least likable winner: Hands down Brian Heidik.
Best looking non winner: Tammy from Africa episode.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

uh- five minutes sitting in my media-crazed BiL's living room...

reaffirmed my belief that the world's gotten even less sophisticates in the last 500 years.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

This season would have been better if they had not gotten rid of that woman from Houston who was 39 and had been an NCAA track star at the U of Houston. She was more intelligent than most of the others and could speak in more than monosyllables. Instead they kept that tatoo lady around for a while and she was hell to look at. In the early Survivors, at least we got some great looking ladies to look at: Penny in Thailand, Tammy in Africa, Elizabeth in Outback and Heidi and Jenna in Panama. Now we only get the tatoo lady.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Heavy, heavy sigh...

I mean, if you like it okay, but...

I can't think of anything I would rather not watch. This is about as "real" as Star Wars, but without being entertaining in the least.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Different strokes for different folks

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Im afraid I hate these shows as they remind me of life based on a money system.

The promise is of big money, but you have to be good at "games and politics",but in the end its only one that gets the money(when there is enough on this planet for everyone) and the rest miss out.

Meantime you have wasted your time and energy when EVERYONE deserves to have what the winner gets.

If we all just agreed to share what is here to everyones benifit, then shows like this would be seen as meaningless.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Kevin, I don't entirely agree with you. Several of the Survivors deserve to share in the money but, just as in real life, I don't believe that those who don't do their fair share or pull their own weight or those who refuse to work as a team deserve any part of the money in the end.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Do you mean "Team",as in we are against another so that the other team misses out,or those who are part of a "community",where there is no trying to beat anyone, but a sence ALL working together so no-one misses out.

"Real Life" is every-one getting what we are worthy of.Money doesnt recognise this,it says you have to earn anything you have, even the basics like clean water.

Life is a gift...you dont have to "earn" a gift,or anything else thats needed to support that.

Whats happening on this planet is not the "Real" life, but a corruption of how it could have been, and the fact that many dont even have the basics proves money has failed as a way to distribute even the bear essentials.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

It doesn't have to be a moneyed system. Variations of status exist in societies that don't have money.

I don't see how Survivor is a reflection of a money-based system. Everyone receives a monetary reward, even the first cast-away. It's just a matter of degree. As you say, everyone gets what they are worthy of, according to the rules of the game. You sign up for the game, you play by the rules. And those rules say that not everyone is equal--well, they aren't, really; some are great at fishing, others should stick with scrounging for coconuts. Some people get rewarded more than others, but for a specific reason. You didn't outlast, you didn't outplay, you didn't outwit. It's all down to you, your abilities, and how you're willing to use them.

It's not life itself that makes you worthy of any reward--it's what you do with that gift. If you choose to do nothing in it, what exactly are you worthy of? A person is the sum of their acts; valued for what they have done, not the mere fact of their existence.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Tiphanie,
I think you might have missed the point I was trying to make.

Everyone is worthy of the basics of life...but you dont have to play the game of the money system to have your value validated.

Everyone IS equal.

Who determines that getting coconuts is more important than fishing ?

"others should stick with scrounging for coconuts"
Why "should" they?
what if thats all they know, but the truth is their potential is a lot greater than that?
How will they get to know that?

If we feel we cant do more than getting coconuts, maybe thats because we dont know that we can be anything...but why does it have to be within an accumilation regime, weather thats money(which is 99% of the worlds exchange)or any other means.

If we know our worth, then actions of worth follow and reflect that..and no material thing we earn through the money system is a reflection of our worth.

"A person is the sum of their acts"..acts based on what values?
Actions dont make us valuable, only actions that have value, and thats determined by what values we have or are indoctrinated to believe.

If we have poor beliefs about ourselves, then the results will be poor because you dont think its possible for any kind of value to come from yourself. And many people think that, because if "i dont have a lot materially, then what "value" do i have?"

But if i know the truth about myself, that I do have a lot to offer because of the incredible value that I have inside me,then we will be motivated to have a life full of actions of superior value that reflect that worth...and money doesnt buy us this kind of knowledge...only knowing what love is does.

I dont want to just survivor of life,I want to have a life of superior experiences with incredible people who know that they are that...and money and what it can get me wont give me that....most of the time money stops people from seeing this.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

And that's why you don't sign up for the game. You don't want to play by those rules, and that's your choice. You say that everyone is of equal value, and equal potential, and I agree. But if they fail to exercise that potential, should they be rewarded? Survivor isn't about distributing the basics unfairly--everyone gets the basics. It's the luxuries, the not bare necessities, that are up for grabs. Everyone gets food, water, shelter, friendship, as long as they help their tribe get those things (unless they're free-riders, but that's a different issue). Those who use their value to a greater extent are those that should win greater rewards. Which is why keeping Janu over Stephenie was a quandary for some Survivors. Survivor is better than a monetary-based system, because, unlike our capatilist system, everyone starts out with nothing aside from their personal capabilities.

Who says what's of value? The rules do. In that game. I suppose you're taking this game as a microcosm of life, but that's too facile a reduction. Life isn't like a game of Survivor, not at all. Even a capitalist system isn't like a game of Survivor. The only reality of Survivor is the interactions between the people themselves. How they play the game. What strategies work. But this is all very limited, to a situation that one doesn't find much in ordinary life. No one's voting me out of my house, or out of my job. I may get fired if I don't perform well enough, but it's not necessarily a regular mandatory ritual.

I'm not sure I've been coherent, or if I've been too random in my musings. It's just that I think it's a worthwhile game, both for the spectators and the entrants. That's all.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Very well said, Tiphanie. If everyone received all the same things at the same level, what incentive would there be to excel in any area? If everyone were a good fisherman, who would gather the coconuts? Some actually like to fish and some like to gather coconuts. Survivor is meant to be a game complete with winners and losers. Some people like the game of chess; some like the game of Survivor. Would you, Kevin, do away with chess tournaments because one person wins all the reward, whether it be money or glory?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Someone commented on Colby wearing bikini underwear. The reason is that none of them have any swim suits this time. Personally, I think that is a mistake. I am tired of seeing the women in their bras and the men in their undershorts.

I love Survivor, I look forward to it every Thursday.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I agree, Happyladi. I also did not like watching James try to fix his toga(?) during the challenge.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Oh, that was his underwear? I thought it was just a bad fashion choice. Come to think of it, I always thought Stephanie looked like she was wearing her bra.

I am getting tired of that Katie girl and the blondie. I hated that Stephanie went right to those two and spilled the beans after Colby pulled her aside.

Survivor has the same dynamic as any office. Some do their jobs while others talk on the phone all day. That's a big oversimplification, but that pretty much sums it up, even down to the whisperings and petty gossip.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Survivor tends to prove one thing that we all intuitively know. If you are physically attractive, especially a physically attractive woman, you have enormous advantages in life, whether it is on Survivor or in the work place. Recall Survivor Thailand. There was two gorgeous babes, one named Penny and I forget the other one's name. And Shi Ann was also reasonably attractive. And they got just about to the end of the show, despite the fact that none of them did alot of work. And for the guys, Brian Heidik, who was a porn actor in real life, got to the end bascially on his looks.
And then cut to Survivor Panama. Heidi Strobel and Jenna bascially did nothing all day long but both got to the end or near the end. And let's face it. It was their looks that did it. If I were on the island, I would also have voted out the chubby woman prosecutor or the frumpy hearing impaired woman. Not they both were not very nice people and competent at their tasks. But they lacked the attractiveness of Heidi and Jenna and the easy charm that comes with physical beauty. If anyone had a choice of being on an island with Eva Langoria or Rosie O'Donnell, Eva wins every day. Even people who would not consciously admit that they would vote for the prettiest ladies of Survivor know subconsciously that of course they would do so if they had the vote.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Oh, goodness! If I were on Survivor with Eva Longoria and Rosie O'Donnell I'd lay down my torch like Janu did! LOL

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

My theory may be in some jeopardy because Stephanie, who is one of the two pettiest women on Survivor this season, was unceremoniously dumped tonight and probably would have gotten the boot last week in only Janu hadn't bailed out.
I would lay down my torch if I were on an airplane or an island with Rosie O'Donnell or Roseann Barr but if Eva Langoria (aka Mrs. Soliz) were on the island, I just might give her my immunity necklace.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Sorry, Reggie, but I disagree with your theory on Survivor. Or maybe it's just a male/female thing. I agree that in life more attractive people very often get preferential treatment, but on the show I don't think the more unattractive ones were voted out first for that reason. Million dollars or not, I would have kept around a lot of the ones voted off over the winners if it was based on their looks. Heidi looked like a freak, and although Jenna is a model she did nothing for me. And neither was particularly charming. I've noticed, however, that as the show goes on season by season more of the men are getting to look more like GQ models and less like many of the average joes I see every day.

That being said, I think I'll drive down to NYC and try to get arrested by Policeman Ken!

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I have to side with Blackcat on this.

I know that looks play a big part on the popularity of the contestants by the viewers. Have you ever looked at the popularity ratings on the Survivor website? All the good looking ones (either male or female) are always at the top of the list. And I noticed that Coby, who I thought was good looking, had a low rating - which I believe is because he was gay (and kind of fey acting) - it just shows you that looks, stigma, personality and phobias play a part with viewers (didn't someone say earlier that they only watched because of the "babes"???)

In the game, however, I don't think that looks have much to do with it. They all want to win the million dollars and personalities and strategies play a larger role in who is voted off.

And hey - Rosie O'Donnell has a great personality!

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I don't think Coby was voted off because he was gay. IMHO, he was voted off because his attitude changed and he turned into a real jerk.

Speaking of Rosie O'Donnell, is anyone planning to watch Riding the Bus With My Sister this Sunday? It's a Hallmark show and they're usually pretty good. I read the book and plan to watch the show. From the clips they're showing, it looks like Rosie does an admirable job in a difficult role.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Definitely agree with Blackcat on the Jenna and Heidi analysis. They both did nothing, except use their looks to get further in the game (if you find skeletans attractive).

Re this season, there have been allegations that the producers planted "models" in place of "average joe's". This doesn't surprise me a bit -- look at Gregg, Bobby Jon and Jenn. As for me, I usually favor the "average" looking people (Rupert, Kathy V.). This season, Steph has been my fav, but that is mostly b/c of her strong determination to win the game. I am sorry to see her go, but at least she made it to the jury.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I don't think Coby was voted off because he was gay either. I was just saying that he had a low popularity rating on the Survivor web site and I think that was the reason.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Each season, it seems that for the male contestants you get more physical trainers from yuppie clubs in LA than you get guys like Clay (The diminitive dimwit from Lousiana in Survivor Thailand). I never understood how Rob and Amber (or Ambuh as Boston Rob calls her) could get so far. Neither had any appreciable charm, neither was a great athlete or was great to look at and neither was particularly interesting. It makes you wonder how either got selected for the show in the first place. I thought the more interesting male contestants were Ken the Cop from NYPD and Ethan the soccer guy.
But how in heck did Rob and Amber become even 15 minutes of fame type celebrities? If someone can figure this out, please post. At least contestants like Ken the NYPC cop on the beat had a real job.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Well, if you look at Rob's behavior on the Amazing Race--he can be really charming when he wants to be. And sneaky. Two traits that are helpful in winning the interpersonal aspect of the Survivor game, IMO.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

It seems that if the producers want to highlight a particular contestant, they edit the episodes to feature him or her even though that may not be what is happening on the ground. For example, Ruppert got so much air time in the Amazon episodes that you could forget that there were other contestants. I suspect that in actuality, he was not the lovable teddy bear that he was portrayed to be.
I think the worst gimmick in the whole series was allowing the voters by telephone and email to give Ruppert a million bucks even though he lost fair and square. He and his colleagues were dumb enough to allow both Amber and Rob to continue each tribal council and Ruppert and his cooleagues voted out people who were not scheming together like Rob and Amber. So Ruppert, having botched his strategy, deserved nothing. The premise of the show is that you are not supposed to get second chances so how the heck can they give Ruppert such an undeserved windfall?
The Ruppert million dollar "surprise" was kind of a cheesy ending of the All Stars and it reminded me of the tacked on ending of the Kevin Costner movie "No Way Out". The tacked on ending had nothing to do with the rest of the movie. It was just the directors and writers saying "See how clever we can be".
On another subject, the best contestant who did not win was "Big Ted" from Thailand Survivor. That was a funny character.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I imagine they are stuck showcasing the players who give them the best sound bites. Which, I suspect, is why we have seen so little of the pretty but uninteresting girls of Koror. Why show these girls making inane comments when you have all of Coby's snarkiness to entertain us? As soon as he was gone we got a tiresome interview with Tom being all nice and generous and supportive of everyone. Boring! I think Steph got a lot of air time because a) she made it to Koror and b) she gave intense emotional interviews.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Tom the NY Fireman seems to be a poor copy of Ken the NYPD cop. Ken was a far better character.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I wasn't particularly sad to see Gregg go. I think it will get more interesting now with Tom, Ian, Katie, Caryn and Jen left. Will the gals gang up on the guys? Will Tom, Ian and Caryn stick together? I'm not at all sure that any of the females has a chance to win either reward or immunity. Perhaps the girls will vote off whichever of the guys does not win immunity. On the other hand, maybe the challenges will be changed to give the girls a better chance.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

It look like a sure thing that Ian is going wo win. I am not sure why he is so popular but he seems like a shoo in.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

The women should band together and vote off Tom first, then Ian. The men are stronger, and they win immunity, especially Tom. Unfortunately, the women probably won't have the sense to do it, as we've seen from past knuckleheads on Survivor. I mean, wouldn't you have broken up Rob and Amber? Duh!

I think Tom's more likely to win than Ian, but Jen may somehow find herself in the final 2!

Isn't the jury hilarious? With Coby making all sorts of comic facial expressions and Stephanie shooting daggers they are too much.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Loved, loved, loved this last episode! Gregg asking Jenn's permission; Ian and Tom willing to risk the rock of death; the look on Jenn's face at TC, and Coby's and Stephanie's.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I will be really sad if one of the girls wins. Tom and Ian have taken all the chances, done all the work and won all the challenges.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

It is surprising that Gregg had to ask Jen[s permission to decide who to go on the trip. THe bio on the web site says that he is a big college football and baseball player so you would think he is independent. I could see if it was Jen or Heidi from Pearl Island as those two were both hot and no man isolated for 39 days could resist.

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Well, another girl down. I find it interesting that Katie and Caryn couldn't keep their mouths shut while Jen just sort of sits back and watch them cook their gooses (geese?). I'm ready to find out who wins.

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

WooHoo, Tom won. I would have been just as happy had Ian won. I think they are probably really good people.

How 'bout that Coby?! Awesome.

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I find a blank piece of paper has more entertainment value than network TV...

and a trip to the dentist more fun that shows like survivor.

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Ian was so whiny at the end that no one could stomach him. his whining to the last women in the contest was so phony that any couch potato could see through it.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I must be lower than a couch potato, Reggie, 'cause I don't know what you mean.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Well, did anyone think that Ian was serious on the beach when he said he would sacrifice himself out of the game just to make another contestant happy? That was totally BS on the part of Ian. He coould make his phony offer and then after getting credit find a reason not to so so. It just didn't ring truthful to me.

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

Oh, yeah, I agree with you on that. But how do you explain the deal he made with Tom to step down if Tom would take Katie? Do you think it's possible he and Tom made a deal beforehand?

 o
RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I think Ian was as dumb as a doornail to jump off the buoy, and Tom blew that comment way out of proportion. I took Ian to mean he would choose between Jen and Katie. Katie didn't deserve to be in the final two that way, but I did feel sorry for her because most of the people were pretty cruel to her. Did she deserve it? I missed a couple of episodes.

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

I think Tom and Katie played Ian for all he was worth. That said, I think Ian and Tom had an agreement to take Katie to the final vote. I suspect that neither was sure they could win against the other. I know 2nd gets $100k. What does 3rd get? Ian was so very popular I suspect that with a good agent he could get some interesting jobs now.

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

The bios on the Survivor web site on CBS.com says that Ian was the student president at Penn State last year and wasin charge of just about all the student activities there. So he must have some kind of ability to charm people and to get people to like him. He must have some kind of charisma since Penn State is a large university. It really did not come across on the show but it must have come across to the casting people at Burnett's company.
I never saw what was so great about Tom the fireman. Ken the NYPD cop from Survivor 5 had real stage presence. Tom just seemed like a not very nice guy.

I guess this thread will disappear until we meet in Guatemala in September.

RE: Does anyone watch Survivor?

It's always sad to see a Survivor series end. This one was a vast improvement over the last one. Hopefully, they will have a good cast for the next one. I am proud to say that I have never been able to sit through an entire episode of Apprentice. Surivor is Mark Burnett's masterpiece and Apprentice is his Gigli.
