It's April-what are you watching?

| Last night I dug through my DVD's and watched High Society. It was not really a great movie, but I do enjoy musicals and in particular enjoyed the scene with the great Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby singing That's Jazz, and Frank Sinatra and Bing doing their duet-I think it was called Did you Ever..? anyway I love the old musicals and wonder where the talent is today that we took for granted years ago.
Are there any new movies coming out that you plan on seeing?

I've no idea when it will be available to rent, but I really want to see the French film "Cache", with Juliette Binoche.

Watched the delightful "Enchanted April" again last night.

Well, my movie club was suppose to send me "Head-On" (2004): a German-Turkish movie about a man whose wife dies and how he copes. Instead, they sent me "Head On" (1998). I didn't know I got the wrong movie so imagine my surprise when... well, let's just say the movie wasn't half bad, if you like gay porn! I also watched "Bus 174". A documentary about a bus being taken hostage in Rio de Janeiro. A little slow and disturbing; liked it better the next day. At the theater, I saw "Thank You For Smoking". There were many laughs in the theater, but not many from me. Even my friend fell asleep. I heard every concept in the movie a thousand times before and turning the concepts into one big boring satire didn't make listening to it any easier. I thought Aaron Eckhart acted well; I haven't seen him in many things. Oh, and here's a shocker: Maria Bello kept her clothes on for the whole movie! Hope I didn't say too much. All and all, I probably liked the gay porn movie the best - go figure.

I really liked "Head On" - I saw it a few years ago. I thought the lead actor was incredibly good looking.

I watched The Magnificent Seven last night. I am not really a western fan, but I have always liked the casting in this one-and the music-it was your 'basic' western! Pat

Carla, I bet you could start a thread on 'if you order A but they send you B' with A and B having almost identical titles... could be fun. We watched 'Funny Bones' last night, a 1995 film that didn't get anywhere near the attention it deserved. Very very funny, but also very dark in places. Beautiful cinematography, great use of music. Highly recommended.Has anyone here seen it? I would love to discuss it a bit, but suspect nobody knows it.

The new Chronicles of Narnia movie was out yesterday so I bought it and watched it last night, just as good as I remembered-enjoyed it again! Pat

As always it's a mix of my highbrow and my roomie's lowbrow Netflix: Finally saw "Junebug" which was marvelous. I'm a big fan of Nivola and Embeth, Amy Adams was adorable too and the whole cast was stellar but I was most impressed by the subtle, meticulous work of the guy who played the brother. I wondered where they found such a gem and then my roommate told me this kid stars on "The O.C.". I could hardly believe it! Re-watched Bergman's acclaimed "Wild Strawberries" again since several years have passed, but I still don't agree that it's one of his best films (Woody Allen's brilliant and criminally underseen homage to it "Another Woman" by contrast never fails to deeply move me) give me "Fanny and Alexander", "Persona" or "The Seventh Seal" instead any day of the week. Watched the charming Witherspoon/Ruffalo RomCom "Just Like Heaven" which unlike most in the genre was also truly and frequently funny. Thanks to some gracefully executed physical stuff from Mark in the "All of Me" vein and the film stealing, absolutely priceless actress who was Tracy Montrose Blair on 'Six Feet Under' playing Reese's sister. Having Donal Logue, Ben Shenkman and Napoleon Dynamite in your cast certainly doesn't hurt either. Definitely a cut above. Also saw "Into the Blue". Good acting and truly breathtaking scenery (and not just Alba's arse either- at least half of the film is shot gorgeously under the ocean) but unfortunately the plot is as predicable and therefore as forgettable as can be.

I watched "The Squid and the Whale", which I thought was great. The dad made me uncomfortable, perhaps because I know a few similar type men. Very good performance by Jeff Daniels. At times I really disliked him, and others I felt sorry for him. This would be a good film to generate discussion, I would think. "Capote" is rented and waiting in my DVD player, which I'll probably see this weekend.

I waited for Brokeback Mountain to be available on DVD and received it the first day from Netflix. It so far exceeded my expectations -- I had to watch it twice. Once one gets past the uncomfortable aspect of the movie, it is just a beautiful love story. The acting, the scenery, everything about the movie is so well done that I can't see how it didn't win the academy award. Even though I don't buy many movies, I will have to buy this one and I'm sure I will cry every single time I watch it. The only question I have is what did Ennis say at the very end? I listened to it multiple times and don't have a clue. Maybe I should post this question in the thread on the movie but I don't know if anyone would read it after all this time.

Frances, at the end Ennis says "Jack, I swear..." The tears in his eyes get me every time.
Spoiler
| | |
Sorry all, I probably should have noted "SPOILER" in my post above (though I guess it's not much of one). Why, oh why won't The Powers That Be let us edit our own posts?
RE: It's April-what are you watching?

Thanks so much, Dorieann. I don't think it is really a spoiler. This movie was probably the last one I would have expected to make such an impression on me. All the jokes do the movie a great disservice.

Spamlet, having seen "Junebug", did you feel that the deep south and its culture was being lampooned? (I'm asking because you live in the deep South). frances, there would be no problem in pulling up the thread on Brokeback Mtn. for yourself others to add their comments.

My Netflix movie last night was Derailed with Clive Owen & Jennifer Aniston. When it was finished I wracked my brain for the name of an earlier movie that seemed so similar-anyone see this one and know the name-I am fairly sure it is a remake? The premise of the movie had me yelling at the TV-stupid-how stupid-but then I have never been in a postion to be blackmailed LOL! Pat |

A friend just loaned me "The Man from Snowy River", 1982, filmed in Australia. It was different enough to hold my interest and Kirk Douglas was excellent. (I'd missed this when it came out years ago).

Saw Capote last night. Not as good as I thought; alot of loose ends, imho. I would have liked to have seen more of Capote's earlier years and those after ICBlood. And although PSHoffman's performance was remarkable, I STILL say Heath Ledger's performance of tortured-soul Ennis should have won hands down. Also saw Pride & Prejudice and yes it was good, but not as good as Sense and Sensibility, imho. Someone should really do a movie about Jane Austen's life. I read she never married and died at age 41.

Watched "Goodbye Lenin" and found it quite enjoyable. Billed as humourous, but I found it quite sad in many regards. Basically a devoted Socialist Mom in East Germany falls into a 6 month coma during which the Berlin Wall comes down. The humor comes from the lengths to which her son (who reminds me very strongly of Toby McGuire) goes to keep her from finding out after she comes out of the coma. Recommended - but nudity we prudes find prurient.

'nymph, Let me put it this way, the film was made by Southerners and they took special care to give all of the characters a soul. So, although yes, there were elments of lampoon it was done gently and with love. Then again, I'm hardly an expert on the South like some here are, I'm a duhty Yankee who's only been here a year and a half, my first 30 years were spent in Cleveland. CB, I'm glad you agree with me on Ledger! I love PSH but although technically masterful he doesn't even give the best performance in the film, IMO. Clifton Collins Jr. who plays Perry is absolute perfection, and I'm appalled that he didn't get nominated for best supporting actor. OK so this was an incredible week: Fever Pitch- absolutely impossible not to love this movie. Baseball fan, sports fan or none of the above, the Red Sox miracle of last year is one of the most magical real life events imaginable and a perfect setting for a heartwarming love story. Continuing my re-watching the greatest foreign classics on DVD I revisited Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" and I think it's arguably the definitive statement on 20th century life. The downside (and why I was mainly watching again for the extras) was the commentary. I could hardly believe how ironic it was that Richard Schickle was calling a lot of the film's characters pseudo-intellectuals since his commentary was so surface and missed all but the most obvious points. Alas, this film isn't on Criterion whose commentary is always remarkably insightful. Get what you pay for, I s'pose. "In Her Shoes"- I was once lucky enough to be in a film ("Wonder Boys") directed by Curtis Hanson and he's one of our best filmmakers. This is easily one of the best films of last year and since almost no one saw it that's a tragedy. I can't recommend it strongly enough. See this movie! It's funny and poignant and surprising. It's one of those rare Hollywood movies that could actually change your entire outlook on life.

Watched "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" last night and just didn't enjoy it as much as the previous films. I had a difficult time following what was going on. It seemed that I was thrust into one situation after another without much explanation of why and what was going on. Perhaps I should read the book?

clairabelle, you are in luck. A film about Jane Austen has just gone into production in Dublin, with Anne Hathaway (can she do 'English'?) James McAvoy and Julie Walters. It is about an early romance when she was a girl.

"Walk the Line", Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon. Surprising when Netflix said there would be no wait. Really enjoyed the movie. Especially Joaquin and Reese.

Stay-starring Ewan McGregor-a very strange and weird movie that left me scratching my head....apart from the plot-why did the McGregor character wear pants too short in every scene with white socks...huh? if there was some symbolism there it escaped me! Pat

Trying out a new DVD player today and watched "The Man who Knew Too Little" with Bill Murray. I think it is one of the cleverest screenplays around.

Watched "Jarhead" and I'm still trying to decide if I really liked it. It was interesting, and the scene with the burning oil fields was well shot. Very good performances, and I'm happy to see Lucas Black back acting in anything. I just watched about half of "Fun With Dick and Jane" before stopping to surf online for a while, and I never interrupt a movie. Yes, it's that bad. I really don't want to watch the rest of it.
RE: It's April-what are you watching?

"Mrs. Henderson Presents", Judi Dench. This movie leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe it is time for Judi to hang it up? Shuffle board in Florida? Although I thought she was superb in "Iris".

Went out to see "Friends With Money." Have mixed feelings-- the best thing about the film is the maid's role with Jennifer Anniston, IMO. Frances McDormand looks really repulsive in this film (unwashed hair, broken nose, etc.)I don't know the Brit who played her husband, but thought he also did very well in his role. If you are curious about the wealthy Calif. scene you might like this one. Some of the dialogue is fresh, but the ending is far too abrupt, IMO.

I have had Memoirs of a Geisha sitting here for over a week-and just got Mrs Henderson Presents - however I only just discovered that we get BBC America ! Saturday night when I planned on watching Memoirs-I 'discovered' a detective show on BBC America called Messiah. I didn't realize it was 4 episodes back to back so there went 4 hours-very enjoyable 4 hours too! Last night was PBS and Under The Greenwood Tree which was not quite as good as I had hope, the lead female Keeley ? was too old for the part IMO... Pat

I finally watched Memoirs of a Geisha last night and was disappointed-not sure what the problems was-I haven't read the book and although I understood what was going on....something seemed lacking IMO...not sure if it was the editing? My DH has been on a kick buying I-MAX DVD's to watch on our new TV-the other night we watched Cosmic Universe narrated by Morgan Freeman and another called StarGazeII which had no narration but which was beautiful to watch-all taken from the Hubble. I am the 'sci-fi' nut and he is fascinated with Astronomy! Pat

Dh and I recently rented Brokeback Mt and Hostel. First of all, dh wouldn't watch Brokeback which I kinda figured. I really enjoyed it, especially the scenery and such. But Hostel---holy freaking crap. I had ZERO idea what it was going to be about, other than these guys traveling through Europe or something. It then turns into something like the "SAW" movies. VERY dark, disturbing and upsetting.

Pat -- I agree with you on the female lead being too old. To be honest, I preferred the younger woman who had the hots for the carrier character (the one who eventually ended up with the teacher). I thought she (the younger woman) was more attractive than the teacher. Anyway, the other beef I had with the production was the seeming "Hollywood" ending. I've never read the book but the ending seemed too pat and too nice where everything went perfectly -- the bad guy (the parson) got what he deserved, the lead characters got together, and even the rich guy found someone else. By the way, I saw "Oldboy" a few weeks ago and was impressed so much that I went out and bought the DVD. I don't know if anyone's seen the movie but it's a Korean production that, apparently, lost the Best Picture award at Cannes to "Farenheit 9/11" by one vote. I should warn you -- the movie's not for everyone. It's violent, it's disturbing, and quite twisted.

"Jagged Edge" (1985). Glenn Close, Jeff Bridges. Doubt if there will be a lot of sleep going on in this house tonight. This great thriller just went on and on. Mystery, court room drama, scenery; this movie has it all. Terrific ending of which I will not reveal.
RE: It's April-what are you watching?

Just rented "Shopgirl." Not a bad little film, IMO. Good acting from Claire Danes. Steve Martin and the "nerdy" Schwartzman (whom I'd never seen before).A decent romantic tale, with a bittersweet ending. IMO, Danes continues to grow and astonish as an actress. In this film, she alternates between plain and pretty. Steve Martin was good, but why, with his nose, can I only think of "Cyrano?"
RE: It's April-what are you watching?

"The Unsaid", Vincent Kartheiser, Andy Garcia. A very tense, psychological thriller. Not for everyone; we liked it. Hadn't been that up on Andy Garcia before. Good actor in a difficult role. Ditto for Vincent.
RE: It's April-what are you watching?
| | |
"Presumed Innocent", Harrison Ford. A murder mystery, taken from the book written by Scott Turow. Very good; recommend.
RE: It's April-what are you watching?

Les Choristes, excellent. A new teacher at a painfully strict boy's reform school tries to enrich the boy's lives through music. It reminded me a little of Billy Elliott. The singing is manifique!
RE: It's April-what are you watching?

Bill, my problem with "Jagged Edge" was that I didn't recognize the guy at the end. Made it a "huh?" movie for me.
