Box Office Bombs

I just came across this list of movies that failed to meet their production costs: List of US Box Office Bombs. I'd heard that the notorious Heaven's Gate was the biggest failure, but it seems it's been beaten by others both by absolute and relative measures. The most amusing is Zyzzyx Road: budget, $2,000,000; domestic revenue, $30.

Well, too bad. I absolutely loved "Heaven's Gate." I also was surprised to see "The Postman" on the list. (Is this Il Postino?) I also happened to like "Zabriskie Point", "King Arthur", and "Kingdom of Heaven." One that belongs on the list is "Maid in Manhattan." Also "Spanglish."

I loved "Hudson Hawk" and "Serenity." The list seemed over loaded with movies of the last 25 years. Surely Joan Crawford had at least one bomb.

Million Dollar Hotel with Mel Gibson's gotta be way up there on the list.

Woodnymph, "The Postman" was a Kevin Costner vehicle in which he plays a post-apocalyptic postman. A post-postman, so to speak. I didn't see it, but it sounded ludicrous. - Not the same as "Il Postino". Chris, I also noticed that there are no old movies. Could it be that the film industry just did not work with such huge budgets, therefore even flops were less costly? I was sad to see two Terry Gilliams on the list - "Baron Muenchausen" and "Tideland" - even though I really didn't enjoy the latter. Also "Serenity", which was brilliant - at least for those of us who already knew and loved "Firefly". Unfortunately the film industry measures directors by financial success, which always works against those who do something different, go out on a limb.

I also noticed there's no old movies listed. It's A Wonderful Life bombed when it first came out. I guess if crictically ravaged Doctor Zhivago came out today, it would probably bomb at the box office, but it was a rage when it came out...affecting fashion, haircuts, even little girls were named Lara.

Yes, I noticed too that no old movies are listed. For example, "Intolerance" died at the box office, when it was released. Even when it was pulled from theaters and cut in to two films and re-released it still died at the box office. Apparently, the film came out about the time America entered World War I, and film audiences were not interested in a film that talked about intolerance. Now, the film is regarded as being one of the greatest silent films, if not one of the greatest films, ever made.

I hated "Dogma' with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Was it on the list?

That's cool. Reading up on the Zyzzx Road release, though, explains what happened. In order to fulfull SAG rules so they could pay the actors a lower rate, they had to release the film in the US. So they released it to one theater for six days to keep SAG off them while they maintained the ability to get an American distribution deal in the future. I was surprised about Boondock Saints. But that's probably because no one heard of it. :P I certainly hadn't. But it's a major cult film now.
