 o
'chick flick' recommendations?

Posted by Carol_Ann (My Page) on

My SO is going to be gone this weekend so I'm going to make a huge bowl of popcorn and curl up in a blanket and watch movies at least one night. We normally watch movies we *both* want to see so when one of us alone we catch up on other stuff. Any must-see movies I should get? You know, light, fluffy stuff (or deeper), romantic, funny... something a guy might not want to see. Decent acting and plots. I have a few sci-fi on my list (he's not a fan) but wanted some other ideas.

Thanks!

Try the Legally Blondes, they are light and fluffy. The First Wives Club for a new one. The old "The Women" from the 30's is always good.

Calendar Girls
Fried Green Tomatoes
StepMom
Hanging Up
Steel Magnolias....to name a few of my favorites

I'm not the biggest chick-flick fan but I think the following are good:

City of Angels
The Notebook
Emma
Chances Are
Dangerous Beauty
The Princess Bride

Steel Magnolias
A Price above Rubies
Corinna Corinna
Dear Heart
Step Mom
One True Thing
The Women
High Society OR The Philadelphia Story
Penny Serenade
Moonstruck
Little Voice
The Dead

I would suggest, in addition to the ones above, An Affair to Remember, Singing In the Rain and All About Eve.

Thanks, everyone! I've seen a number of those but several are new to me. It's going to be a fun movie weekend.

Still taking suggestions if anyone else has any. I may have to get my SO to take another weekend trip :)

If my wife was answering, her list of recent chick flicks would probably look like this:

Serendipity
Notting Hill
13 Going on 30
Runaway Bride

 o
RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

Sense and Sensibility
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Love, Actually
Little Women
Breakfast at Tiffanys
When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle
Out of Africa
While You were Sleeping
An Officer and a Gentleman

Funny how you linked "When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle" together. I always had a sneaky suspicion they were the same movie. LOL

 o
RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

While you were Sleeping
Americas Sweethearts
Bridget Jones Diary (the first one)
Seems Like Old Times * especially good on a rainy day
Serendipity - although that chick's a little wacko

I can't believe no one suggested "Shall We Dance?" For most recent films, you absolutely must see that and The Notebook.

Closer
Love Song For Bobby Long
The Winslow Boy
An Ideal Husband
The Cooler
Stage Beauty

 o
RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

also...Chocolat
and Secrets and Lies

 o
RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

Untamed Heart
Benny & Joon

Benny & Joon...

and 'the fast and the furious' because girls do not live by sap alone, and Vin is one of the few pieces of beefcake on the planet who doesn't need cue cards when giving interviews :)

RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

So what did ya watch?

 o
RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

Well, I went armed with a great list, thanks, everyone! Of course the video store didn't have a lot of my first picks (for example, none of the Audrey Hepburns I wanted to see) (and we don't have the best video storn in our neighborhood) but I ended up watching:

Sense and Sensibility
North by Northwest
Chinatown
Little Voice

I know, not all "chick flicks" but I wanted a mystery/thriller or two, too, and I've been wanting to see N x NW for a long time.... everything was nice, easy watching (well, Chinatown was a bit dark, but still pretty good). It was fun to just curl up and relax.

There was one other I saw, and now I can't remember which one. It's not on the list I made from your suggestions so it's one I just picked up as I wandered around the store, but which one?... Darn! :)

Anyway, I took all the suggestions I hadn't seen and put them on a list and now I'm well-prepared for my next evening alone. Oh, and a few of the recommendations are ones my SO will most likely enjoy, too, so I've put those on "our" list.

Thanks again, everyone!

I'm glad you enjoyed your weekend of viewing. Stick with us and pretty soon your list will turn into a book.

 o
RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

Might I suggest you add Shirley Valentine to that list? It is a wonderfully romantic movie - particularly if you are a woman of a certain age.

Also check out Truly Deeply Madly another deeply romantic movie starring Alan Rickman as our hero. Yes, Professor Snape is oh so sexy in this.

 o
RE: 'chick flick' recommendations?

Carol Ann, have you heard of netflix.com? It's really great not having to depend on local video stores for best picks.

Chris, I agree about Truly, Madly, Deeply. I really liked it, but I'm on a perpetual Alan Rickman trip. That man can touch me here and touch me there LOL. He's truly a great actor, and I find it incredible how he brings the stage to the screen. Can't say I've ever observed that with anyone else before. I hate he hasn't made all that many films. My next netflix order will include "Close My Eyes." Has anyone seen that one?
