Can't slip it in and then go get a cold bevarage ....

| Movies that must be watched closely from the beginning. I've now watched two movies, back to back, that I first saw, or thought I saw, on TV and did not like or appreciate until I actually paid close attention. 12 Monkeys and Dark City.
Lots of movies can be picked up and enjoyed with half attention or dropping in and out. Some, however, demand our attention from the first frame.
What movies do you think are not any good unless one watched closely from the beginning? |

| Any good movies should be watched 'properly' (I won't turn on a film halfway through on tv, and I hate interruptions when watching a DVD), but I know what you mean - there are some films that you just can't 'get' if you miss bits. With some movies it's a question of getting all the information and clues, such as The Usual Suspects which is hard enough to follow even with close attention! With other movies it's less about following the plot, and more about needing all the atmosphere, dialogue, subtleties etc to get the sub-text. Barton Fink comes to mind in that category. |

| "Les Diaboliques" (original version, please) And any silent film ever made. I was stunned the first time I watched a silent movie at home (years ago) because it takes 100% of your attention -- no running to the laundry room while the movie continues to play in the background! |

| I actually hate watching movies with interruptions. DH has no problems popping a film in and eating a full dinner with utensils in front of the TV! Me? I like to buckle down and sit properly on the sofa and have all my snacks - and I'm talking small snackage - a soda and candy - not full-blown meals - in front of me first so I don't have to get up. I guess I want to feel like I'm having the full-movie-going experience and I like to focus on the screen. Most films I like to enjoy this way. Fluffy films - perhaps like Dude, Where's My Car? (which I want to state for the record I've never seen) - but a movie like that it's ok to get up and do laundry. I think you get my drift! The irony is, most films I catch on cable and I'm just hanging out on the sofa and I'm not "buckled down" or prepared in any way. I just drift onto it and watch it without putting any thought into it. But thanks to Tivo I may pause it and get up and grab a drink. |

| Once again I agree w/ Anya. If a movie is even halfway decent I feel it's disrespectful to the artistic contributions all of those who made it to not give it as much of your full attention as possible. After all, you wouldn't keep walking in and out of the theatre if you were watching a play, I hope. It's one thing to pause a DVD but to leave it running while you go do other stuff? Sacrilege to true movie lovers. I gotta say your thread title had me wonderin' there. I was thinking "well I suppose you could if your partner is strong and acrobatic enough..."! LOL |

| Yeah, Spamlet, I realized that after I'd posted. I agree that in the best of all possible worlds we would watch all shows from beginning to end without interruption. I was thinking more of the movie that we come upon when channel surfing and settle in to watch after it was underway. I was more interested in a list of movies that should be avoided completely under those circumstances and which shouldn't be judged by the bits we see before switching the channel again. I would, for example, never have revisited 12 Monkeys if people whose movie opinions I respect hadn't touted it here. And I apologize for my spelling of beverages. sigh. |
