June viewings

hey all....

Saw a copy of Gran Torino and loved it. Clint was vintage, his family great at being out of touch with him and his generation. I really liked the young gal next door, who despite crass Clint, insisted on keeping up a dialog with him. I wondered about why this didn't get any Academy Award nominations, especially best pic.

I also saw Revolutionary Road, sort of reminded me of Far From Heaven. How DID we get to be so sheeplike? The free spirit types are courageous aren't they?

Thanks for the reminder about Grand Torino I will ck it out I am a fan of his.

This week I watched The Curious Case of Benajmin Button and thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a long one but the time passed quickly.

I also saw The Reader, I wasn't going to watch it because I didn't care for the book but since I really like Kate Winslet I decided to see it & I really am glad I did, she was great in it.

Last week actually went out to the movies & saw Angels & Demons which I thought was better than DaVinci Code.

Watched Gran Torino over the weekend. Our Dirty Harry/Walt/Wally is back! lol Lots of lessons in this one.

I agree with you Paula about RRoad resembling Far From Heaven (one of my favorites) and even one of the characters in The Hours.

Also watched The International with Clive Owen, good edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller with a spy against spy flavor from different locations around the world.

RE: June viewings

I've been watching a few Christian Bale's, 2 from way earlier...

Swing Kids- good movie, Nazi's etc.

Newsies- ok, I think they should have left it as a drama, instead of switching to musical at the last minute. It seems to have a cult following

3:10 to Yuma, good job, loved Christian and Russell Crowe both, especially Russell

AND---------------I saw Star Trek last week ,, finally. Loved it loved it. Good casting on everyone, faithful to the ol' 60's series. Especially the new/old Bones. My DH and I were wondering whether we missed a romantic attraction between Spock and O'hura in the original series? There was un-requited love with Nurse Chapel and Spock, but we don't recall an episode with O'hura and Spock. Anyone know? Dynomutt, are you there?

 o
RE: June viewings

Paula-I agree with you on Star Trek, I really thought it was good - but-I don't recall any relationship that Spock had with Uruhu, although I do remember the episodes when it was Vulcan 'breeding' time LOL!

I watched Australia last night, long & predictable, but still enjoyable although it could just have easily been about America, I was hoping for more history of Australia....but that is my opinion-but why called it Australis if you don't really go into it's history...

RE: June viewings

Can't wait to see Star Trek!!! It's coming to our city soon. Did u say U'Huru and SPOCK?? Wasn't there something between her and KIRK in one early episode? Hmmm...

Paula, have u seen Christian Bale's EQUILIBRIUM and THE MACHINIST? I've seen (with relish) the first one several times but not the second. Although a fan of his since Empire of the Sun (he should have won an Oscar, imho), his highly publicized antics on set and with family have me wondering what's really up with him...

 o
RE: June viewings

lol clairabelle...me thinks Christian is becoming Russell Crowe #2, ha. He certainly carried the movie Empire of the Sun. I saw that last year. Memorable. The Machinist was amazing, saw that several years ago. And I hadn't a clue about how it would end. I should watch it again. You won't believe the weight loss he endured for that one. Equilibrium..haven't seen that...on my list.... has just been zoomed to the top of my Netflix queue, my daughter and I jockey back and forth for first place with our selections.

Yes, O'Hura and Kirk made the FIRST bi-racial kiss on 60's TV. It was in the episode where their physical actions were controlled by an alien, so they were forced to kiss. Such scandal for then night time TV. Nowadays you turn on the TV and see stuff that makes you long for the 60's...sigh.

Saw Daniel Craig in Defiance last night and enjoyed it. It was much better than the previews which portrayed it as a love story-not! It was about the Jews hiding out in the forests for years during WWII-based on true events.

RE: June viewings

Hi! First post to this forum (though I post over at RP & the gw forums).
I just watched Changeling last night on dvd -- I thought it was fantastic. I have a weakness for movies based on true stories of strong women bucking the system.
Pat, Swing Kids is one of my favorite WW2 movies. I want to see Defiance soon.

 o
RE: June viewings

Welcome, ajpa, the more the merrier!

I guess Norma Rae, Silkwood and Erin Brokovich must be on your list of faves then, eh? lol

 o
RE: June viewings

Thanks clairabelle!
I actually have never seen Silkwood -- I will put that on the to-rent list.
I think Changeling reminded me most of Iron Jawed Angels -- maybe because it was also period and a similar sense of "I can't believe they actually did that back then".

Another June dvd for me was The Duchess, which I watched while in the middle of Alice Foreman's biography Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire, which it drew heavily on. It was interesting to see the movie's slant on the book. Fiennes was excellent, imo, as the Duke.

 o
RE: June viewings

aipa-I loved The Duchess, but then I love most period movies LOL!
I tried reading the book after seeing the movie to get more of an idea of "G" and her times, but couldn't hack it...I actually couldn't believe just how disolute they were in those times-who'd of thought!

RE: June viewings

Watched an old favorite: "Four Weddings and a Funeral." Hugh Grant was great in this, and it reminded me a lot of his role in "Love, Actually." My almost favorite poem ever is in this movie: "Stop All the Clocks...."

RE: June viewings

I watched The International last night-love Clive Owen but this turned into quite a 'bloody' movie with lots of shootings.

RE: June viewings

Saw Equilibrium clairabelle,, coooollll. Quite the action star young Christian is. The poochie scene made lumps in my throat.

I watched There Will Be Blood again for fun. Amazing Daniel Day Lewis.

"I'm finished!!" lol

RE: June viewings

Finally saw "Pinchcliffe Grand Prix" again. Last time I saw it was .... something about 20 years ago! In case you're not familiar with it, it's the English dubbed version of the Norwegian classic stop motion animation "Flåklypa Grand Prix".

Man, it's weird watching something that I saw when I wasn't even a teenager and then seeing it again more than 20 years later. I still enjoyed it though. Great racing scene!

Oh, and I saw "Hellboy II: The Golden Army". Not bad -- I think the first one was slightly better.

RE: June viewings

Watched Phoebe in Wonderland last night with Ellie Fanning playing Phoebe...and interesting family movie.

Went to see The Proposal and enjoyed it, as my friend said, 'we needed a good laugh'! Betty White was priceless.

RE: June viewings

I watched a bunch of dvds you all have already seen since I last posted. In order of enjoyment:

Gran Torino -- this was great. I wish they subtitled the Hmong grandma's mutterings whenever she'd see Clint. LOL.

Defiance -- Fascinating. Liev Schrieber & Daniel Craig have great chemistry, don't they? The great thing about watching on dvd is that we got to see photos of the survivors & interviews from survivors' kids in the bonus features.

Valkyrie -- I also found this fascinating. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan but the story was enough to make me get past that. Plus I always enjoy a Bill Nighy performance. It was so interesting to see the little things that went wrong -- they were so close to success.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button -- I guess the awards these got made me expect more. I liked the beginning -- I always like stories of growing up different. But I lost interest mid-way. I thought it was over-long, meandering, and I couldn't see the point of adding Hurricane Katrina - every time a reference to HK came up I kept getting pulled out of the story.

Pink Panther 2. Kids picked this. We like watching original Pink Panther series, and this was terrible. It had a great cast -- Jean Reno, Alfred Molina, Andy Garcia, Emily Mortimer, Aishwarya Rai, Jeremy Irons, John Cleese, Lily Tomlin (!) but the movie was terrible. Because of Steve Martin. He does not understand Inspector Clouseau. Clouseau is a gallant detective, a hero at heart, and Steve Martin plays him as an arrogant jerk. Roberto Benigni's Son of the Pink Panther does a better job at channeling the spirit of Closeau.

RE: June viewings

Oh, I forgot -- we also watched Inkheart and enjoyed it a lot. We are fans of the book, and the movie, while taking some liberties, does a good job, imo. Brendan Frasier is always fun to watch and Paul Bettany steals the show as Dustfinger and Helen Mirren is fantastic as always. It's a great family film, specially for bookworm families.

 o
RE: June viewings

I added Inkheart to my Queue-they said a long wait!

My Netlfix movie was Nothing But The Truth-Kate Beckinsdale & Matt Dillon, it was enjoyable, based on some true events and a suprise ending.

RE: June viewings

Watched The Contender, with Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges, Gary Oldman. Excellent. I don't usually watch political movies but this one grabbed me. Very relavent, especially considering the recent election.
