Movies You've Never Seen

| cjoseph's thread about films watched repeatedly reminded me that there are many, many movies I have never seen -- those that other posters say they've seen multiple times. I'm not talking about those that I don't want to see or have barely heard of, but rather those that I have somehow missed, though I highly suspect they would be "just my thing." Example: Until just a couple of months ago, I had never watched "The Philadelphia Story" with Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. How did I miss out on this gem for so long? I can't give a good reason...it just happened. Has it happened to you, too? What are those films that you missed seeing for years or you still haven't seen?
I have a good friend who will not admit he's never seen a film. Actually, I don't doubt him because he really does seem to have seen everything! But what awes me is: Where does he find the time? I mean, it's not like reading a book where different readers read at different speeds and one reader can consume multiple books in the time it takes another to read just one. Everybody watches a film at the same running time -- oh sure, you can fastforward a video or skip parts, but most people don't do that the first time they see a film, and certainly you do not "dip in and out" in a theatre. This has always perplexed me. In my mind, professional reviewers of films don't count...I'm talking about ordinary moviewatchers, like you and me.
There's probably a generational dynamic involved -- for instance, I don't expect too many younger-than-baby-boomers to have seen all the Frankie & Annette beach flicks (silly example, but I can't think of a better one at the moment), and some of us moviewatchers who weren't teenagers in the 1980s have never seen "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" or "The Breakfast Club."
Newer films -- say, those released after about 2000 -- haven't really had time enough to trickle through to those of us who don't rush out to the theatres, so I would like to stick to films that came out in 1999 or before.
This ought to be very interesting -- to read about what you haven't seen but think you should've! :-) |

| Well, I've never seen "Memento". I own the DVD but I still haven't gotten around to seeing it. I've never really seen all of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" or "Jaws". I'll have to think about this some more! |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| I don't think I've ever seen High Noon in its entirety. Every time it has been on tv, something has prevented me from watching more than 10 or 15 minutes of it. This a good reminder for me to finally rent it. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen

| I've always been meaning to watch The Red Shoes, but I've never gotten around to it, partly because the local video store didn't carry it. Now that you've reminded me, I'll order the DVD even if it is $35. I hope I like it at that price. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen

| cjoseph, I meant to ask you on the other thread where "The Red Shoes" came up: Have you seen Michael Powell's "Peeping Tom" (1960)? The latter essentially axed a big hole in his career. I had heard about "Peeping Tom" for years and wanted to see it. I knew it was notorious; but in spite of knowing, I was still knocked for a loop. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen

| I've never seen Harold & Maude or Shawshank Redemption. I don't know how I missed the first one, as everyone is always talking about it. Moreover, I missed O Brother where art thou, Blade Runner, and Fellini's Satyricon (although I've seen almost all of Fellini). I had missed M Butterfly until quite recently when a friend loaned it to me. Dyno, I liked Memento and found it quite a challenge in its direction. Cjoseph, The Red Shoes, from your post above, is expensive, but remember that it is far longer than most films and has exquisite footage of an entire ballet. As a collector's item, I think it's worth it. Anton Walbrook is incredible, as the Impresario..... |

| Frieda: I haven't seen Peeping Tom, in fact I never heard of it till now. I looked it up on Amazon, and it seems like a movie I'd to see. But another $36 DVD? I'll have think about it for a few days. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen

| cjoseph, I understand your dilemma. I have bought movies that I really didn't want to buy simply because I haven't found them to rent. Sometimes I've felt the investment was worth it just to see an obscure film, but most of the time it wasn't. I certainly can't tell you that "Peeping Tom" is worth $36!! You might like it -- I do, in a weird sort of way; but unless your taste is as particular as mine, you could despise it and think I'm loco. Mary, I've never seen "The Shawshank Redemption" or "Blade Runner" either. I have seen bits of "O Brother Where Art Thou" or rather I seem to catch the same bit over and over -- something about a cabin in woods being engulfed by a flood, which makes absolutely no sense out of context. My husband and sons have watched "O Brother..." what seems to me like dozens of times and they swear that I'd probably like it, but I don't know...I just can't seem to sit long enough to follow it through. Okay, I'll admit that I have seen only a part of one of the Star Wars films (the first one, I think) -- which is beyond my sons' ken. They can't believe that I've never seen an Indiana Jones flick either. I've never seen "The Godfather II." I'm not even sure if I saw all of "The Godfather," though I've seen the horse-head scene more times than I ever wanted. The only Arnold Schwarzenegger film I've seen is "Stay Hungry" -- and that was decades ago! Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Godfather franchise, and Arnold-action really aren't my kind of films so I'm not too worried about those. However, I'm baffled that I've never seen "Sunset Blvd." |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen

| Frieda, I use my DVD rental service for things like the 'Red Shoes' (which I actually need to add to my rental queue as I have managed to miss it so far). It's usually much easier to get old and rare films via rental than the latest releases! As for your question - there's a whole lot of movies that 'normal' people watch and which I avoid, such as most romantic comedies, blockbuster action movies etc. The movies I've not seen but want to include the entire Kurosawa oeuvre and all of Fellini's films. Also 'Das Boot' (although probably the tv version rather than the film; not sure). I don't think I've seen 'Sunset Boulevard' either. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| I've never seen any of the Godfather films, nor any with Arnold, nor Sunset Blvd. And I had never even heard of Peeping Tom..... |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Well then, I think everyone should rent Sunset Blvd and lets discuss it. I've seen it all the way through about 3,maybe 4 times. I've never seen any of the Godfather films, but I don't have any particular desire to watch them, not Jaws, nor The Exorcist, nor It's A Wonderful Life, nor Mr. Whatsit goes to Washington, nor .... Still on my TBW list are Sling Blade and now I've added The Red Shoes. Really, most everything I want to see is in my queue. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Good idea, Chris... just give me enough time please, as we're not going through our rentals at any pace right now - by the time it's cooler and halfway dark, it's usually too late to watch a movie! I've got 'Les Enfants du Paradis' in the drawer right now, which I remember as being rather on the long side... I saw Peeping Tom on tv long time ago, very very disturbing. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen

| I love the Powell/Pressburger films. "The Red Shoes" is one of my favorites. Re: "Peeping Tom" - it is scheduled to show on Turner Classics this week - Sat. to be exact - July 10 at 3:30pm EST. |
Never seen
| | |
| Two high profile films that I've never seen are "Dr. Strangelove" and "The Best Years of Our Lives." |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
Have only seen the ending of Casablanca. Have only seen the beginning of All about Eve. Have only seen the first and last Star Wars (ho-hum) Have only seen parts of Wings of Desire. Have never seen the ax-murder Freddie series (hate the genre) Missed On the Town and The Dictator. (and many more to mention) |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Oh-oh! Chris and anyanka, I'd love to view "Sunset Blvd." with you. But I'll have to get home before I can (around the 15th of this month, I think), unless I can find it in a local rental place. So, don't wait for me: I'll catch up with you. Phillip, thanks for the heads up on "Peeping Tom." Maybe those who want to can catch it on television 'cause it really is too expensive to buy on DVD right now. clairabelle, is that the Wim Wenders-directed "Wings of Desire"? I haven't seen that one, though I've been told by several people that it has my name all over it. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| yep, Friday, that's the one. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Maybe an August Discussion of Sunset Blvd? Or is that too soon, too? The Red Shoes is another I'd be interested in discussing. Purely selfishly, a discussion means I'm make an effort to see it soon and it won't fall off the edge of "someday." |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| August sounds good, Chris - enough time. I've just added The Red Shoes to my rental list, too. Perhaps for September? What happened to the movie club arrangement on this forum, anyway? |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Heh! clairabelle, I'll answer to "Friday," though I didn't intend my user name to be Plattdüütsch. Actually, my name is Frieda G or just plain Frieda, but that distinction was lost when the powers-that-be made us all lowercase. At least you didn't call me "fried egg"! :-) Why have you only seen parts of "Wing of Desire"? Is it because you couldn't get interested enough to watch all of it, or is there another reason? I apologize for the multiple queries, but I'm really trying to get a feel for this film before I rent it. Chris and anyanka, August is good for me. I'll do my best to watch "Sunset Blvd.", but someone may have to remind me of a discussion as I am notoriously forgetful. I will gladly watch "The Red Shoes" again and discuss it, too. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
To be honest, Frieda, I just caught smidgens of it on tv one night long ago whilst at a friend's party and have not seen it again since. The only video store who carries 'repertoire' films has moved from my area, so it's really out of my way to get out there. Also, I am not a member of any online video rentals, Netflix or whatever, nor do I buy videos. Count me in on the Sunset Boulevard discussion. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Plattdüütsch? What do you know about that, and how? (I understand it but don't speak it. My father used to read a particular author to us in Platt when we were on holiday). You people never cease to amaze me! |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Count me in on The Red Shoes discussion. I own it and have seen it a zillion times. Anton Walbrook is amazing, IMO. There's another film I'd like to discuss. Has anyone seen Night of the Shooting Stars (La Notte di San Lorenzo)? I have a question about a betrayal in it by a priest. Would anyone care to enlighten me? It's a very beautiful, but incredibly sad film, set in the latter days of WW II in Tuscany. Frieda, yes, I loved Wings of Desire and think you would, as well. Also, try Run, Lola, Run. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| In all my years as a movie lover, I have never once had the pleasure of seeing an Elvis film. Not even three minutes' worth of one of them. A definite 'hole' in my resume! |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| A few I've missed: The African Queen East of Eden (seen only bits) just about every John Wayne film, including big ones like Sands of Iwo Jima, The Quiet Man and True Grit - although I have seen only bits of The Searchers neither version of Cape Fear The Longest Day (even tho DH has the video and loves it) Ditto The Spanish Prisoner - for some reason I never get around to watching it, even tho he has it and I still have never seen David Lynch's Mullholland Drive, even tho I wanted to when it came out, I never made it, and it's one of those films I keep meaning to rent but never do and ditto for Lynch's The Straight Story still have not seen a few of last year's big hits...Munich, Good Night and Good Luck - it's appalling, I know! I'll have to think about this more.... Count me in on The Red Shoes discussion! |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Wow, my head's awhirl! Mary, you cinched it: now I must see "Wings of Desire" and "Run Lola Run." Moongirl, if you think it's appalling that you have not seen last year's big hits, think about me -- I have probably seen only about 12 to 20 films released after 2000. There are just too many to keep up with -- it's hard enough for me to sit still five minutes, much less the hour and half to two hours that most films run. A definite 'hole' in my resume! dweck, what a hole to fill! ;-) Teasing aside, Presley's films -- as silly as some of them are -- are time machines for me and I'm inordinately fond of some bits; for instance, the choreography of the "Jailhouse Rock" number. I'm more of a Beatles-girl, but none of those guys could move like Elvis...I never get tired of watching him on his toes, with knees bent and those shoulders shrugging. Ahh! Poor Elvis (Poor Elvis?!!) never got a chance to develop into a serious actor. anyanka, Plattdüütsch was one of the dialects brought to the Upper Mississippi region of the US (Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc.) by 19th century immigrants. One set of my grandparents spoke their "Platt" until well into the second half of the 20th century. Like you, I heard it and understand it but don't speak it. My other grandmother -- the one who was a war bride -- spoke a Bavarian dialect that the Platt-speaking group couldn't make heads nor tails of. She read us stories in her Bavarian dialect that I must have understood some of, because I remember the stories quite well, but I could always understand the Platt much better. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Dweck, my grandmother drug me to all the Elvis movies. She couldn't admit she wanted to see them, so she told everyone she promised me she'd take me. I liked Roustabout the best, don't remember why. Looks like we have a couple of discussions on the horizon. Sunset Blvd and The Red Shoes. I'll post something before the end of July and give us a month to find and view them. Unless someone else wants to? |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Thanks, Frieda - isn't it fabulous when a minority dialect migrates and partially survives in a far corner of the earth? By the way, Bavarian is largely unintelligible to me, as are many other dialects. It's not surprising that you find Platt easier; a lot of the words are very close to English. It used to be said that Hamburg dock workers could communicate fairly fluently with English sailors because of the similarities. I'm in for both Red Shoes and Sunset Blvd, by the way. No 1 daughter has opted for film studies as one of her A-level subjects, starting in September; I'll drag her in too! |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| I'm in for Sunset Blvd, too! They are making the musical film (of the Broadway show) starring Glenn Close and Hugh Jackman. Perfect casting, and they both can really sing! |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| This trashing of The Searchers reminds me that I've never seen it despite reading for years that it's the best John Wayne movie, or the best John Ford movie, or the best Western movie. The article makes me want to see it now. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen
| | |
| Interesting link, Joseph; thanks! That was fun to read. While I understand why the article makes you want to see The Searchers, it baffles me that anyone would nominate it as a top ten film, or western, or even John Ford movie. Even among John Wayne movies it wouldn't make it into my personal top three (and I'm no John Wayne fan). It has interesting ideas, but it is very muddled and flawed, as the article says, and looks painfully dated now. |
RE: Movies You've Never Seen

| I saw an interview this morning with Jerry Bruckheimer (sp?) and they were showing his early films and I realized I had never seen American Gigolo-did I miss anything LOL!- or is this a "must see" film? I will definitely see the musical of Sunset Boulevard and yes Glen Close can sing-I have the Andrew Lloyd Weber 50th birthday VHS and she sings a couple of songs from the musical -I was really impressed.
