Movies about Wars in the Future?

Hi everyone,
I'm a lurker here, but thought I'd throw in a question for everyone here.
I'm teaching a class (Freshman English at a public university) about modern American wars. I'm starting at WWI, and moving through a section I've not creatively called "Wars of the Future." Since this section falls at the end of a term of heavy reading, I'd like to treat my students to a film, but I'm having trouble coming up with a good one.
I thought about showing "Dr. Strangelove," because even though this movie isn't about a 'future war,' per se, it does toy with the possibility of a full-scale nuclear war, which is something we've yet to witness (obviously).
Or, I could go way more sci-fi/action and show a Star Trek film, or one of the Terminators.
Clearly, I need help. I'm open to any interpretation of 'wars of the future' that you can come up with.
Thanks,
Ashley |

Well, you could always treat them to "Red Dawn". In case you're not familiar with the movie, it's about a Soviet invasion of the US. (Yes, Reagan-era movie.) By the way, they may be remaking "Red Dawn" for a 2010 release. If you wanted full-scale nuclear war, there's also "The Day After" and "On The Beach". For a "future" war, you could also try "Canadian Bacon", a comedy where the US invades Canada. (It has a somewhat similar premise to "Wag the Dog" -- a president launching a war due to sagging popularity.) And now if you REALLY want a war in the future, you could also try "Starship Troopers". Yes, it's sci-fi but it has enough stuff in the background to show how the war is going and how it's being sold to the people. And don't bother with the sequel. Oh, and then there's "Children of Men". Strictly speaking, it's not about a war in the future but there's a war raging in the background. I'll keep this in the back of my mind and if any other movies pop into my head I'll list them. Hope this helps!

I second the recommendation of "On the Beach."

Not a war between nations, but against humanity, "Equilibrium", on the level of "Farenheit 451", if it helps.

A great classic (Black and White) is Things To Come by H.G. Wells. It goes from WWI and continues to the future where mankind is rebuilding the world. A bit hokey perhaps, but a film I've always enjoyed.

Things to Come, definitely. But On The Beach was a real heart-breaker.
