Guilty Pleasures

I think this has been discussed in the past but since I've been enjoying the new "Special Edition" dvd of "Valley of the Dolls," I thought I would bring it up again. What widely regarded bad movie do you enjoy watching again and again? I bought two this past week - "Valley of the Dolls" and "Mommie Dearest." I know they were panned when they were released but I have to confess, I find myself fascinated by them and can watch them over and over again.

Ha! Phillip, "Valley of the Dolls" has never been a guilty pleasure for me 'cause I've always liked it. And "Mommie Dearest" is an absolute scream -- watching Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford is one of the great jawdropping moments of my moviewatching experience. Are they bad? I don't care! Okay, here's a credibility-sinking confession: I thoroughly enjoyed "The Blue Lagoon" with Brooke Shields and that young fella. Nope, when I first saw it I wasn't in the throes of hormone change either -- I was thirtysomething. I liked the 1949 version with Jean Simmons as Emmeline and I had read the book they were adapted from. I still think the older version is better; but I like Leo McKern as the old man in the 1980 film, as well as the stunningly beautiful setting and photography. The scene where Emmeline and the boy find the bones of McKern's character on the beach...well, that's NOT puerile -- puerile being the favorite epithet to describe this film. I like the other Randal Kleiser film that shows lots of skin: "Summer Lovers," with Darryl Hannah in a Greek-Island menage a trois. It's the scenery -- sparkling turquoise sea, hills, white buildings, switchback roads, and the motor scooter that the character called Lina drives -- I swear! ;-)

The Zorro films only to spend a couple of hours "admiring" Antonio Bandares.

Er, um, do Kevin Costner movies count? ;D
RE: Guilty Pleasures

Labyrinth with David Bowie, sigh. Something about this movie pushes all my buttons.
RE: Guilty Pleasures

Pidge, anything with Antonio Banderas! If he's in a movie, I can't tell if it's good or bad. Chris, is Labyrinth considered to be a bad movie? Either way, I love it.

Anya, I don't know that it is considered bad, just not top rank.

Hmmmmm........ anything with Keira Knightley in it. Or anything with Uma Thurman in it. And Rachel Weisz. And yes, that includes The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. I also must confess a weakness for "Ghostbusters" and some of the older Jackie Chan movies. (I can't help it -- I grew up watching Jackie Chan!)

Almost any film about Russia, good or bad. Any film with Oskar Werner in it, good or bad. Ditto for Anton Walbrook. I also liked (eons ago!) the old Helen of Troy movie with Jacques Sernas and Rosanna Podesta. I even liked the movie about Greece not too long ago that starred both Brad Pitt and an aging Julie Christie. (Can't recall exact title -- either Alexander, or Troy).

OMG! I LOVE that version of "Helen of Troy"!! Rosana Podesta is amazingly gorgeous -- can certaily see how she'd launch 1,000 ships. The one and only Robert Wise directed. And for a while (may still be true) "HofT" held a record for the largest studio prop ever built. Something about a horse, if I'm not mistaken......
RE: Guilty Pleasures*

dweck, yep, I still remember that enormous wooden horse. However, it was Jacques Sernas who caught my eye....;-)

Speaking of Helen of Troy, I love watching all those old mythological movies, but I don't think I've seen that version of HoT. Will have to look for it. Clash of the Titans is another one of those that I love to watch when it is on.
RE: Guilty Pleasures

Oh, yes! Any of those old myth movies are delightfully bad. As far as I can recall, none of the so-called 'Titans' in the Clash of are actually in the original legends. I have a weakness for old horror movies - Roger Corman, Hammer horror, anything with Vincent Price in it really.

Whoa yeah, Valley OTD, Mommie Dearest, Poseidon Adventure. One really obsure BAD movie I watched a lot, years ago, don't know why - The Oscar. Truly bad Stephen Boyd, Elke Sommer, and a young Tony Bennett. "Ya lie down with pigs, you come up smellin' like GARBAGE" LOL The one I really hate to admit to The 10 Commandments. How corny, campy, lol!
