Really?! Bergman's dead? Wow ....... And yes, checkmate. Sooner or later, we all lose that game. At best we can prolong the inevitable (And I think that's what the knight was doing in the movie, if I remember correctly)

Oh, my....I'm sad. I adored his films and have watched some of them over and over again. What a loss to cinema. Somehow, I thought he was one of those who would endure forever. I know he endured a painful childhood and wrote a lot of his early experiences into his film direction. Yes, Dyno, in the "Seventh Seal" (one of his finest), the knight is playing chess with The Grim Reaper.

I remember seeing the "Seventh Seal" as a pre-teen and not really getting the point of the movie. I did, however, think that the idea of playing chess with Death was a cool idea. I saw it much later (I now own it) and I was able to appreciate it much better. And I still think that playing chess with Death is a cool idea.

"I thought he was one of those who would endure forever" He will. I hadn't realized just how many films he had made 'til I went to imdb and saw the list. Whew! Lots of films I've yet to see!

I'd like to know your Bergmann favorites: I know mine are his "Fanny & Alexander" and "Wild Strawberries." (the first was in color, which at the time, seemed rather unlike his style, but it was brilliant).

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't seen as many as I should. I too liked Fanny and Alexander as well as Wild Strawberries. I've seen Winter Light, Persona, Dreams and Through The Glass Darkly all of which I enjoyed, or I should say which moved me. Virgin Spring and The Passion of Anna I probably need to watch again to appreciate. Probably my favorite is Scenes From A Marriage. He seems to pick/make very intimate films that plumb the deepest sometimes darkest depths of his characters. I'm a little slow I guess so at least for me one aspect of his films I've enjoyed is that they can be watched numerous times and each viewing reveals another layer.

I agree about the multi-layering and complexity of his characters and stories. kwoods, I think you might like his last film, "Sarabande", which reminded me very much of his "Scenes from a Marriage."

Thanks! I just ordered a copy off 1/2.com for five bucks!

Thanks for the recommendation woodnymph2, I enjoyed Saraband very much.

I haven't seen that many either, but of what I have seen, I like the early stuff better. I first saw The Seventh Seal in college and was profoundly affected.
