July - what are you watching?

I don't think I saw a July thread yet.

Finally saw Finding Neverland last night. I almost didn't recognize Dustin Hoffman.

Follow-Up Postings:

RE: July - what are you watching?

"Quiz Show", Ralph Fiennes; "A Bronx Tale" and "The Mission", Robert De Niro. All very much above average.

RE: July - what are you watching?

The DVD I ordered of The Tales of Hoffman arrived this afternoon and I just watched it. Great as always, and the subtitles deciphered a lot of the singing that had mystified me previously. The DVD has a short interview with George Romero about how he first saw the film in the theater when he was 11 or 12 and has loved it ever since. He said back in the days when one wanted to see a particular movie and had to rent a 16mm projector and the print, he watched it over fifty times. Sometimes, when the rental agency didn't have it, he knew that Martin Scorsese had it out since he was equally fascinated with it. Tomorrow night, I'll watch the whole thing again, this time with Scorsese's commentary turned on.

RE: July - what are you watching?

As I vaguely recall the actual Hoffman tales from my childhood, I shall follow your recommendation and put that DVD on my rental list.

Unfortunately my rental service hasn't been great recently, they've just sent me stuff picked apparently randomly from my list rather than from the top 5... which is why we watched 'Gothika' last night, something my teen daughter ordered. Not bad, though, for its genre. Halle Berry is very very good, but Charles S.Dutton is more wooden than my sideboard.

'Les Enfants du Paradis' is next, but the old German 'Muenchhausen' will have to wait until Lovefilm finally cough up the Gilliam 'Adventures of Baron M.' to go with it!

 o
Joseph, please clarify!

Joseph, you mentioned the Tales of Hoffman previously but I can't find the thread. The only film that comes up on the IMdB is a 1916 German 'Hoffmans Erzaehlungen'. Could you help me out please?

 o
doh

Okay, I got it. It is of course Hoffmann with two n... I must have been thinking of Dustin rather than E.T.A.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Just watching "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942) story about George M. Cohan played by James Cagney. It never seems like the 4th of July without this great movie.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Got a nice double-bill on Sunday: Sunset Boulevard and Festen.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Recently saw an oldie: Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, about a family struggle in WW II Germany. A much younger Glenn Ford and Yvette Mimiuex.

Yesterday was for about the 10th time "Night of the Shooting Stars" (La Notte di San Lorenzo) directed by the incomparable Taviani brothers. As usual, I cried at certain scenes. One of the best film scores I've ever heard. I have a question about one aspect of the plot. Possible spoiler: Did anyone else wonder about the betrayal by the priest....?

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Les Enfants du paradis is also on my list...I'm looking forward to getting that one in the mail.

I'm also looking forward to getting shipped Murderball and The Squid and the Whale.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

I rented and watched 'Door to Door' to feed my crush on William H. Macy. I somehow managed to miss it when it was on telelvision. Good story, but great acting on his part.

I also rewatched a DVD I own, 'Running on Empty', and mourned again over the great loss of talent that was River Phoenix. This movie remains one of my all time favorites.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Saw the Lake House yesterday. Expected to be moved, but the film did not work for me. I liked both Reeves and Bulock, but at times the film just seemed silly IMO....

Saw a preview of the new M. Night Shamaylan soon to come out, which looks both interesting and scary.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?*

Just came fromn Devil Wears Prada. This was so well directed, IMO, and well cast. Streep is incomparable and I thought this her strongest role yet. Loved the scenes in Paris and NYC. Well worth the price of admission, in my view. Anyone who has ever thought they have the job from Hell will love it!

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

I am most likely the only person not to have seen "Meet the Fockers". If you want laugh for 2 hours, this is the one.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Bill I haven't seen it-saw the previews though-I think I will pass on it.

Pat

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

I watched a French film called "La Ceromonie," which is based on my favorite writer, Ruth Rendell's book "A Judgement in Stone." I enjoyed it although the book is much better.

Saw "The Devil Wears Prada" on Saturday. I liked it but expected it to be funnier. Meryl Streep is great, as usual. I can't say that it was a totally enjoyable film though because the characters were so mean and despicable.

Also saw "Prairie Home Companion" which I loved and posted a thread about it. Great film!

RE: July - what are you watching?

Last movie in from Netflix, The Magdalene Sisters - holy religion batman!! About the Irish Magdalene laundries of the 60's in Ireland for 'bad girls', and based on a real documentary, interviewing women previously incarcerated. My, the distance we have come in social attitudes, beliefs. A powerful must watch.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Paula I have that in my Netflix Q but haven't watched it yet-I saw the 60 Minutes episode about it a couple of years ago and saw some the actual women interviewed it was gut-wrenching stuff.

Pat

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Paula, I saw it when it came out. Powerful and disturbing.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Paula, agree it is a must watch.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

I seem to recall Bill had posted about Magadalene Sisters sometime ago. I fill my queue with recommended movies from you guys! :-D

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Last night we watched Run Run Bang Bang-based on a recommendation here-can't recall who-but-nothing personal whoever it was but I thought it was terrible!
All the 'f' word stuff was just for shock value IMO.
It was trying for funny ? I don't know why I finished watching it-except my adult daughter got a few chuckles out of it, but she agreed it was a stupid waste of our time!
I know, I know-we all have different tastes, but this one was definitely not to mine.....

Pat

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Pat , I believe you mean Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - I had a couple laughs through it, but honestly, I thought Val Kilmer was wrong casting, especially against Robert Downey Jr. They missed the mark on the humor, and the finger incident was cringing~ instead of funny.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

I received the DVD of The Red Shoes and watched the movie and listened to the commentary. I really enjoyed it, especially the ballet sequence, but I don't think I'll watch it as much as I have The Tales of Hoffmann simply because the latter was more musical. The drama was rather simple, but the visual and aural aspects of the film made up for that. I hadn't realized that it was based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen. I'm thinking about buying an anthology of his work since I haven't read it since I was in elementary school.

I then watched a borrowed DVD of Corpse Bride. Here too the story was simple, but the reason to watch was the visuals. Actually, I found the extras about the making of the movie more interesting than the movie itself.

In the pipeline are The Searchers so I can see how bad of a movie it is, and Tristram Shandy because I'm curious as to how they filmed this unique and curious novel. Guilty pleasures follow in the form of Ren and Stimpy DVDs.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Paula - you are correct I did get the title wrong!
Am I permitted to use the excuse that the movie was so bad that it blew my mind LOL?:?!

Pat

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

"Casablanca". Love the classics!

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Rumour Has It...Shirley McClain funny as usual in her role these days as a grouchy granny- "don't call me Grandma"!

Pat

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Pat, I’m sorry you and your daughter didn’t enjoy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I’m one of those who recommended it. All I can say is, I thought it was hysterical, and most of the reviews and "buzz" were very positive. I’ve always tried not to recommend movies that most other people wouldn’t enjoy. The movie does employ a very dark humor though, which is not to everyone’s taste. (Unfortunately I come from a very twisted family who’ve taught me to enjoy such things.)

I’ve seen Rumor Has It as well. WARNING TO OTHERS – MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD. Did you consider it gross when Anniston’s character went directly from thinking this guy was her dad to having sex with him? That gave me such heebie-jeebies that I had trouble enjoying the rest of the film. But Shirley McClain can always be counted on to steal the show, as she did here with very little screen time. She’s still one of my favorite actresses.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Since I started watching The Sopranos on HBO just a couple of years ago I've been renting the DVDs starting with Season 1. I'm most of the way through Season 3. The very best part of The Sopranos is the music that is used in place of a soundtrack. So far I've purchased at least five CDs because of finding new (to me) music I couldn't live without.

The acting and writing is excellent but the violence is difficult to watch so I usually have my eyes closed during the violent scenes. The language doesn't even phase me at this point. When you hear a word so often it loses whatever effect it is meant to have.

RE: July - what are you watching?

This was a weekend spent watching movies. Let's see ........

Sin City
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Mr & Mrs Smith
The Package
Kung Fu Hustle
Serenity
King Arthur (well, part of it)

Overall, nothing really stood out except "Sin City" for its sheer visual impact. "Serenity" was neat and well written but I didn't really expect anything less from the creator of Buffy! "The 40 Year Old Virgin" was quite funny but, as usual with a lot of today's dime-a-dozen comedies, a lot of the laughs derives from schadenfreude as the characters are either humiliated or embarrassed (unwittingly). Still, it was quite funny.

"Mr & Mrs Smith" was ok. Lots of gunfire, lots of (what passes for) witty banter between the two main characters as they dodge bullets. Entertaining but........ that's it. ;-)

"Kung Fu Hustle" was kind of weird. It was like watching a live action animated feature. It was as if I was watching a kids' anime, a Road Runner cartoon, and a Jackie Chan movie all rolled into one!

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Dynomutt, did you watch 'Firefly' (the tv series) before 'Serenity'?

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Dyno, I thought the same of Sin City, just watched it last week. The visuals and cartoon dialoge stuck in my mind, way after it was over. I like Rosario Dawson too. Mickey Rourke was over the top!

"Yeesh!"

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

I confess to a sci-fi frame of mind this summer. I re-watched the last two seasons of Farscape and the concluding mini-series, then I pulled out the aborted season of Firefly and then Serenity. Next I dug out the DVDs of the first season and a half of Battlestar Galactica, then I watched the last half of the second season on my laptop where I'd downloaded the episodes from iTunes the day after they aired. Finally I discovered that AOL has the first season of Babylon 5 episodes, which I never saw having come late to fandom, available for viewing. I'm glad I didn't buy them. They are pretty awful, but interesting for a one time viewing. AOL also has episodes of Briscoe County, Jr which I think should count toward science fiction since Bly comes from centuries in the future.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

anyanka --

Unfortunately, I didn't watch 'Firefly' when it was on TV. But, after seeing 'Serenity', methinks I'll have to seek out the series on DVD!

Paula --

'Sin City' was like watching a comic book (or, more accurately, a graphic novel!) come to life. Of course, the movie WAS a "graphic" novel in more ways than one! It's funny butthe lighting, the shadows, the camera angles, all of these things were used so beautifully to create the look, feel, and ambience of a comic book. A masterfully shot movie. Graphic as heck but masterfully done! ;-)

Oh, and Elijah Wood was creepy as hell in his role as Kevin. Man, those glowing glasses in the dark will haunt me every time I walk in the woods at night! (I thought it was Tobey Maguire ....)

This movie sure ain't for the faint of heart (or stomach).

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Speaking of Elijah Wood, I wondered if that was him in that Intel tv commercial with the funny hairdo and long sideburns (you know, the club/hipster look that seems to be popular these days -- or at least that is what I call that look). Anyway... it is! Everybody probably knew that but me.

What have I seen lately? Nothing really noteworthy. My daughter wanted to rent Sky High, so we watched that with her. She loved it, which has reminded me to look for some of those old Disney movies with Kurt Russell. Thought she might like some of them since she liked Sky High so much.

Here is a link that might be useful: Intel Commercial with Elijah Wood

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

On a Bruce Willis kick..:-D, watched Tears of the Sun last night. Mr. tough guy....has a change of heart, defies orders to save more unfortunate people in war torn Africa.

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

Last night I watched The White Countess, this was one of those Merchant/Ivory films which I discovered quite by accident when I was looking at Netflix for films with Ralph Fiennes. The setting for the movie is Shanghai in 1936 and the 2 years running up to the Japanese invasion.
It also stars both Lynn Redgrave & Vanessa, this is not a fast moving film, so if you are looking for 'action' this one is not for you-but I enjoyed it.

Pat

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

An Unfinished Life, and Rumor Has It. Liked them both. Unfinished is very close to the book, and Robert Reford is always good to watch! Rumor was cute, didn't know Rob Reiner was at the helm, I like his movies. Shirley McLaine delights!

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

We got a new film channel last weekend, yippee! FilmFour used to be subscription only and are now freeview; they opened on Sunday with 'Lost in Translation' which I hadn't seen before.

Beautiful film; until then I didn't know Bill Murray could act. He used to just do the one character, whether in 'Ghostbusters' or 'Groundhog Day'. From the trailers seen before, I didn't expect 'Lost in Translation' to be so funny (although it's kind of sad/funny, if you know what I mean...)

Have got 'Sunset Boulevard' and 'The Red Shoes' on rental; just waiting for my film addict daughter's return and then we'll get ready for the discussion!

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

"Inherit the Wind" (1960), As court room drama goes, this movie ranks near the top. Spencer Tracy and Fredric March square off to display their greatness as actors. An all star cast. Not to be missed!

 o
RE: July - what are you watching?

King Kong - couldn't finish watching it! The early part of the movie held my interest, but after watching all the monsters/creatures for over 1/2 an hour-I just gave up!
Did anyone else see it-and watched the entire movie?

Pat
