July Viewings

Perhaps I am not versed in how this site operates. To me, the "Search" function is useless. Should I want to see what people think of a film I wish to rent, putting in the name is the search field has never brought up anything.
I was wondering if perhaps when contributors add to a list- such a "July Viewing" they added the name of the film: such as: " Re: July Viewings+ film title" might work. Any way I’m going to try and see. Probably it won’t work but it is worth a try.

RE: July Viewings- Little Voice

After viewing Defiance and the Magdelena Sisters, both excellent and Revolutionary Road- depressing, we needed something lighter, but hopefuly good.
"Little Voice" was the ticket! Great cast and good music. Definitley not your typical musical. Jane Horrocks was terrific (where has she been hiding). Michael Caine was great as usual.

Finally saw "Chicago" and loved it. Also watched 2 old favorites: "As Good as it Gets" and "Love, Actually."

Well it doesn't do any good to put the title of the flick as an addition to the subject. So much for that trial.

We just finished watching "TAKEN". We are glad we didn't spend the money watching it in the theater.

Pammies-I agree about Little Voice-a real sleeper!
I have only ever seen Horrocks in one other thing & that was a BBC Masterpiece production where she becomes Prime Minister in England-she was good in that one too.

I am watching the Pickwick Papers courtesy of Netflix & am waitng for the 2nd disc which should arrive today...

Went to see the new Harry Potter movie-while I enjoyed it it did vary IMO-from the book a little too much, or maybe I should say the emphasis was on too much 'snogging' & not enough of the books plot & magic...anyone see it?

Saw The Hangover. One of those movies that, early on, you're kind of embarrassed to be laughing.... you "shouldn't" think the gags are funny because well, they are evil, sophmoric and often just stupid. Later, you just give up all the pretense and start rolling around on the floor. Some of the editing is bad, the storyline is all over the place, not a masterpiece but funny in a wicked way. Loved it.

Saw it at home on DVD, not sure it would stand up quite as well on big screen.

Push - I'd never heard of this before hubby rented the dvd. SF conspiracy thriller with psychic super-powered teens trying to escape the clutches of a shadowy government Division which wants them in their experiments. Geared towards fans of Jumper. I liked that it was set in Hong Kong, although on the minus side it had stereotypical heartless Chinese villains and too much gore. Dakota Fanning has a really good moment when she begs the arch-villain for mercy. Worth renting.

Coraline - I think the book is so creepy (Neil Gaiman has serious Mommy issues) I couldn't imagine how they could make a children's film out of it. But they do pull it off, mainly because of the high quality animation. However, it still lacks the heart that Nightmare Before Christmas or Corpse Bride have. Younger kids will probably get nightmares if they watch it.

BBC's Elizabeth Gaskell collection. Ok, so I didn't actually get them in a set, just borrowed them from the library. Cranford, Wives & Daughters, North & South. Love, love, love them. Anyone who loves period pieces or classics like Austen & Bronte will love these.

Doubt - Love Meryl Streep in this. Sister Aloysius is the coolest nun ever. Sister James is a twit.

Watchmen- A completely stinky movie, didn't watch more than 15 min.

kwoods, I know what you mean, I felt the same some years back watching The Wedding Crashers. Completely stupid, but DH and I were in a packed house and everyone was howling, and you get caught up... to the point where you realize how good it feels to just laugh.

Coraline, agree, ajpa, think it does have a good message.

Digging to China has FINALLY been released to DVD! My daughter hadn't seen it, so we watched. Kevin Bacon does a pretty good job portraying Ricky, who's mentally challenged. Wonderful first movie acting from young Evan Rachel Wood.

Here is a link that might be useful: Digging to China
