LOS ANGELES -- June Allyson, the sunny, raspy-voiced "perfect wife" of James Stewart, Van Johnson and other movie heroes, has died, her daughter said Monday. She was 88.
Allyson died Saturday at her home in Ojai, with her husband of nearly 30 years, David Ashrow, at her side, Pamela Allyson Powell said. She died of pulmonary respiratory failure and acute bronchitis after a long illness.

| Minnie-I thought she was one of the 'greats' - and not many left either-too bad....but 88 is a wondeful age to have lived. Pat |

I saw notice of her passing on one of our forums and heard nothing about it in the news. In the old days she was everyone's girl-next-door and loving faithful wife in most of her movies. |

| minnie there was a half-page obit. to her in the Daily Telegraph here in England yesterday. The impression seemed to have been she could have been 'stretched' more as an actress but the studios always played safe, using her in those 'little woman at home' roles. |

Thanks veer, that was a nice tribute. She was never one of my favorite actresses but you could count on a pretty good, enjoyable film if she was in it. |

| So sorry to hear of her passing. She always played such nice characters. And she was very humble and self-effacing about her career. I love movies from the 30's-40's-50's. Sad that most of the actors are gone. |

June Allyson, personally and professionally, was vivacious, perky and always there for people. She was as durable and strong, as she was fragile and gentle. She was a real-life Jo March, a tomboy with feminine grace. And, June Allyson was as delightful and lovely in person, as she was in the movies, on the radio, on stage, and on television. As you stated, and I quote: "The steel in the relationship was always hers, too. Jimmy Stewart’s Monty Stratton would have been content to mope in bed forever if June Allyson, his good wife, hadn’t gotten him out, on his feet, and playing ball."
