Or what are you watching in this month of August?

I finally got to see an unbutchered version of England, My England after a twelve-year wait. It came out on DVD on 31 July and I just got it today, thanks be to Kultur. Anybody interested in Henry Purcell, Restoration England, or Michael Ball would like it. It makes a good double feature with All the Mornings of the World which is set in France at the same time and is also about a court composer, Marin Marais. It's interesting to compare the different interpretations of music making during the baroque period.

On the same order, I bought Harvest of Sorrow, another Tony Palmer composer biopic, this time about Rachmaninov. I've liked all of Palmer's biopics that I've seen except for the atrocious Wagner.

I'll have to look for the one mentioned above, as "Tous les Matins du Monde" is one of my all-time favorites. It really got me turned on to cello music.

You must have been a Latin scholar, Joseph. ;-)

I too love TLMduMonde. Marin Marais' music lives on in the work of Jordi Savall et al.

Changing the 'century', went to see the latest Jason Bourne installment (The Bourne Ultimatum / or/La Vengeance dans la Peau as they call it here). IMHO, not as good as the first two... Sigh... liked Harry Potter better!

Rented Jim Carey's NUmber 23. Muchadoaboutnuttin. The script showed promise but was just a tad short on... emotion and other-than-one-dimensional characters. Carey's portrayal was ok, but he could have been better directed. Perhaps they went over budget??? (mybad, always looking for an obvious explanation)...

Just watched " A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia" Excellent performance by R. Fiennes, who seemed perfect for the complex character of T.E. Lawrence. Actually, I liked this film far better than the older version with Peter O'Toole. It was directed by the person who did "Chariots of Fire." A very timely historical film about the origins of the delineations of the territories of the Middle East as we know them today....

We're doing one of our themed viewings, very suited to this hot weather with its subsequent pests and parasites. We've watched 'The Fly' (1958) and 'Return of the Fly'; next on the list is the Cronenberg 'Fly' (1985). Out of the two old ones, the sequel is superior to the first instalment, both visually and plot-wise.

Don't forget the Simpsons' parody on the Treehouse of Horror VIII, Kirsten.

I just watched Girl, Interrupted which was part of my themed viewing along with Prozac Nation of depressed Jewish girls. I'd read both books when they came out, and I've just now got around to watching the films.

I'm now in the middle of Burdern of Dreams which introduced me to Werner Herzog. I saw it on Bravo or TLC way back when they were still worth watching. It took me awhile to decide to pay $35 for it, but I'm gradually becoming a Herzog "completist." Also included is the short "Werner Herzog Eats His Show" which he did after losing a bet with Errol Morris the documentarian.

Coming from Netflix is The Innocent, another themed viewing of films based on Ian McEwan novels.

Thanks, Joseph - I don't think I've seen that one! For some reason, they keep repeating the same 'Treehouse of Horror' episodes on tv here, usually in spring or around Christmas...
