August Viewing

| I noted that we are still posting August movies in July!
I have watched several movies already this month.
Freebies were Sex & The City which I disliked-as close to porn as anything I have ever seen! (BTW-I have never seen porn-but this is close to what I think it would be like).
Last night I watched Eagle Eye-another freebie on line-scary computers taking us over.
My Netflix movie was an older one-Trapped based on the Greg Iles book 24 Hours-quite good & suspenseful.
I have Inkheart to watch over the weekend.

| I just saw "Julie & Julia" and loved every moment! It is so well-acted by Meryl Streep, who really has captured the mannerisms and voice of the late Julia Child. I really appreciated the French scenes, since I lived in Paris for a time. You will come away hungry from this movie, having ogled the boeuf bourgignonne, and chocolate desserts, etc. I'm glad I'd read the biography of Child that this film is taken from. |

Mary, everyone that has seen Jules & Julia has loved it, I hope to see it this week. One of my book forums will be reading the book for discussion in a couple of months. Pat |

| We generally watch dvds instead of movies (cheaper & more convenient) and I'm definitely watching Julie & Julia when it comes out. It's funny I just watched Doubt with Meryl Streep & Amy Adams in it -- they have good chemistry. Just watched The Snow Walker (2003) which is about a pilot & a sick Inuit girl who crash in a small plane and have to trek across the tundra. Based on Farley Mowat's short story Walk Well My Brother. I liked it a lot. Also watched Warriors of Heaven & Earth (2003) which is rather like a western set in the Tang dynasty, with a bit of Raiders of the Lost Ark thrown in. My daughters are very excited about Ponyo, which is a new Miyazaki animated movie that will show in theaters on Aug 14. I think this one we will have to take em to the movies for. We watch all the Miyazaki films we can get our hands on. |

| Finally watched Inkheart last night & enjoyed it. Helen Mirren was very good-no surprise there, but is was not her usual glamorous role - a good family movie! Pat |

| Pat, what did you think of Paul Bettany (Dustfinger)? I thought he was a scene stealer. |

Princess Mononoke fans, UNITE! lol I'll be looking out for Ponyo too! ajpa, I thoroughly enjoyed The Snow Walker. Have u seen these two: Ce qu'il reste de nous (about what's left of the Tibetan people; Canadian film; masterpiece, very touching) and Ce qu'il faut pour vivre (about an Inuit with TB forced to exile to Montréal for treatment over more than a year and how he fares/how he affects the lives of others; another masterpiece; lead actor is an unknown) |

| aipa-I enjoyed Inkheart a lot-but can't honestly say that Bettany stood out for me-was he the one with the fake large nose? I watched Gran Torino last night & thought it very good & as usual Clint Eastwood was great. We have a lot of Hmongs living in our community here-they are great farmers-several of them have stands at the local Farmers' Market each Saturday-wonderful strawberries & what beautiful flowers they produce-definitely have green thumbs! We finally saw Jules & Julia yesterday-enjoyed it but didn't love it as some have said. DD said she thought it was supposed to be funnier & I said I thought the best parts were mostly in the previews. I think we expected too much after all the hype. Pat |

| Oh dear, my last post was meant for the Frame Game... mea culpa |
RE: August Viewing

| Pat, sorry you were disappointed in "Julie & Julia." Maybe I found it especially entertaining because I spent a year living in France. |
RE: *August Viewing

| Just saw "The Time Traveller's Wife." I'd say it was merely "OK." Maybe my expectations were too high, but I did not find it as powerfully moving as the novel it was derived from. (just a romantic, tear-jerker). |

| Mary after having seen previews & reading reviews I decided to NOT go see Time T-Wife...I will probably rent it later. My Netflix movie last night was The Nanny Diaries, enjoyable enough-but sad that the very rich ignore their children Pat |

Yesterday watched Sunshine Cleaning, a wonderfully refreshing little gem, some mighty fine scenes revolving around 4 family rather dysfunctional --yet endearing family members (special notice to Alan Arkin in his scenes with grandson) and realllly good dialogue (special notice to scene in the van when Emily Blunt's character explains to her nephew the meaning of the word "ba&tard". Priceless! I highly recommend this one. |

| Saw Ponyo with the kids the day it opened. Classic Miyazaki, magic, love, a disrupted out of balance universe, man's relationship with nature, fantastic storytelling, another world... you will not be disappointed. |
