Hi/Thanks/Who/What/You

Hi
Glad to be here. I was invited by a really cool person who is a member here and cared enough to extend to me an invitation. This being after I discovered what a truly ridiculous & disappointing waste of time the IMDB forums can be. Please forgive my seeming negativity and possible self pathetic entry as I normally am a very positive person. I just have zero tolerance concerning a complete lack of control when it comes to wasting my time. If I personally choose to waste a little time, fine, no problem. When others have the unmitigated audacity (thanks Frank!)to irresponsibly waste mine for me, it's bye bye & exit stage right.

I just love escaping into the realms of good and sometimes not so good film. After working 10 hours a day, a good meal, a good film & a good night's sleep seem like a simple and justifiable enough equation for this film fan. Alas, even the staunchest and most die hard of film fanatics cannot live by those staples alone. My main course "here" however, is film. Thanks for letting me munch along with you all. :-)

It's about time they released a really nice 3 volume set of some of Clifton Webb's best obscurities, don't you think? MR. Belvedere Goes to College was just so cool.

Tonight I'm watching Picnic at Hanging Rock. Anybody get into films from Oz?

Welcome. Girls (and guys) just want to have fun here!!

I adore some of those older films from OZ, espec. "The Last Wave" and "My Brilliant Career." And, yes, "Picnic at Hanging Rock was one of my all time favorites.

I couldn't believe how eerie the film Picnic At Hanging Rock had me feeling after I watched it last night. I really had no idea what I was in for except for the most minor of details. What a cool movie! The whole innocence of the girl school setting combined with the weight of the character's conscience transformation experience prior to their disappearance completely engages the viewer. Not only was it a cool vicarious trip to a rural (yet refined) Oz a little over a hundred years ago, some of it's characters completely possessed me with their determination and conviction to overcome and "right" what seemed so unjustifiable to them. I like it when a film's characters are clearly developing a mysterious plot while seemingly compelled beyond their control. Bravo!

The last Wave is excellent with a wild soundtrack that rivals Suspiria (well, almost rivals Goblin's work anyhow)

You may have turned me on to a new one via My Brilliant Career. I'll have to check that one out.

Muriel's Wedding is totally hilarious, yet somehow more & Walk About is also a cool trip (PI)

Picnic At Hanging Rock
Without looking it up again I seem to remember it was based on life experiences of the writer Ngaio Marsh

Yeah, "Walkabout" was interesting, too. I still recall one of the quotes from "Picnic at Hanging Rock": "Everything begins and ends in exactly the right time and place."

Or something like that.....

RE: Hi/Thanks/Who/What/You

Yes! that movie is very "post psychedelia" enter paranormal. I think it will remain a favorite of many for a long time. I have two more Aussie films in line to watch very soon. One is called Breaker Morant & the other is We of The Never Never. Like their 70s rock music extraordinaire, Oz has much to offer the hunter of buried music & film treasure down under.

RE: Hi/Thanks/Who/What/You

Are you Australian, or just having an Oz-film-binge? My favourite down-under director is Baz Luehrmann, he of 'Strictly Ballroom', 'Romeo + Juliet' and 'Moulin Rouge'. The first of those is the only one with actual Flavour of Oz, though.

How about The Rabbit Proof Fence or for something totally camp and over-the-top The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert?
The book A Town Like Alice was made into a very successful film staring Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch way back in 1956 though there has been a popular Aus mini-series since with Bryan Brown as the soldier/station owner.
A pity that the mini-series of The Thorn Birds with Richard Chamberlain, an elderly Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Simmons, and Bryan Brown didn't do the book justice. In no way could California stand in for the outback, nor did the 'flock' of 10 sheep herded back and forth in front of the camera even have Aus accents.
What about films from/about NZ? The Piano had some stunning if soggy scenery and Whale Rider was quite something.

Vee, er, correction: "Whale Rider" is from New Zealand, quite a difference! ;-)

Ohmster, I loved "Breaker Morant." Also, as I recall, "Gallipoli" (one of my favorite films ever)is about the role of Aussies in WW I.

My goodness am I ever GLAD I joined this forum!! So many excellent suggestions for that which I have never seen. With respect to film fan based communique, it doesn't get any better for me!

Much Appreciation,
O

RE: Hi/Thanks/Who/What/You

I definitely second the recommendation for "Breaker Morant"! Definitely one of Edward Woodward's best!

And I like one immortal (to me) quote from the movie "Shoot straight you bastards!" ;-)

As for Australian movies, I'd also recommend "Mad Max" but I think you've probably seen it. ;-)

Muriel's Wedding is great for Toni Colette's performance alone. She makes a rather shallow character very lovable.

 o
RE: Hi/Thanks/Who/What/You

Hey guys, allow me to throw in another of my fave Jane Campion movies: An Angel at my Table. Memorable (if only for the hair!)

 o
RE: Hi/Thanks/Who/What/You

And underneath all that hair,
as you are no doubt aware,
dear Claire,
is Kerry Fox of Shallow Grave.
So there.
