Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I saw Cinderella Man a few days back - Exceptional - recommend highly!

I also watched "National Treasure" a couple days ago - some plot holes, but a cute little family adventure type movie.

Yesterday, I saw "Zelary" -- good, but I guess I didn't like it as much as most did. It sort of reminded me of a cross between "Indochine" and that Pioneer series on PBS a while back.

What movies have been keeping you busy?

RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I am waiting for my Netflix choices to arrive today -
The Italian Job and the newest Wire In The Blood.

I was hooked on the "24" Marathon over the weekend even though I watched every episode when it first aired - then of course tonight are two episodes of Lost-I think including the final episode. I pre-ordered the Lost DVD and rec'd confirmation that it was shipped.

RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

So far this month, my favorite movie has been "Million Dollar Baby"! If you haven't seen it, please take the time to do so! The acting was superb! Also saw "My Life Without Me" just last night on cable t.v. Slow moving, but inspirational. Will give you a lot to think about and makes you realize just how much we take for granted in our everyday lives. Thirdly, "In The Cut" with Meg Ryan, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Kevin Bacon. Does anyone have comments to make about this movie?? Did they run out of film?

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I just picked up the new Appleseed. Amazing animation with good acting and decent script. Neat little story. I bought The Butterfly Effect as well. If anyone out there hasn't seen it, I recommend it, but watch the Director's cut with the original (now alternate) ending. The studios gutted the film for wide release, which basically sterilized how truly original and powerful the movie was.

I also just saw Four Brothers. I wasn't sure if I liked it at first, but by the time it was over, I was appreciative of the good work done in it, despite its formulaic story progression. Good movie.

RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

If not summer's heat, now high gas prices are keeping me in now...:-(

'Crash' , good, realistic showing of how racial prejudice, and resulting fear, is still alive and well. :-/

'A Map of the World' - very good, I could sooo identify with elements of the mother's difficulty in raising young children. If we get back to movie discussions, I want to add this one.

'The Other Side of Heaven' - true account of a young male missionary's time spent with natives in Tonga. I don't generally always agree with missionary's objectives, but I appreciated how a view of a vastly different life, unlike his own, enriched Elder John Groberg's love of life.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

"Delores Claiborne" (1994), Just simply sensational! Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Kathy has fast become one of our favorite actresses. Jennifer's role was not an easy one; she pulled it off well.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Here's another one- "Eulogy"- great comedy! in fact reminded me a lot of my dysfunctional family. LOL!

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I watched the newest Wire In The Blood last night and didn't think it was quite as good as the previous shows.

I don't usually bother with the Special Features, but did last night, Robson Green is beyond charming! and there was also a segment with the author of the books Val McDermid (I think that's her name - or something similar)...

RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Re-watched Equilibrium over the weekend.
Christian Bale sci-fi for all u Matrix fans out there!
I mentioned this sleeper awhile back but got no response as to whether anyone else had seen it. Would like your comments.

Here is a link that might be useful: Equilibrium w/CBale

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Clairabelle, thanks for the sleeper. Have you seen "The Machinist" w/Christian Bale? He loses a lot of weight for this movie. Don't plan on sleeping after this one.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

No, Bill, but it's on my list...

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Anger Management. Not memorable but had a few funny spots. Good film for a pleasant afternoon.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

"Diary of a Mad Black Woman" (2005), Kimberley Elise.

A very entertaining movie. Recommend! For the whole family.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

"Under the Tuscan Sun", catchy name. A lot of characters trying to meld into the plot. Nice scenery, not so nice movie.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Bill, IMO, the book "Under the Tuscan Sun" was far better than the film. I was really disappointed in this movie.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I wasted my 2 Netflix films on a British TV series-Gormenghast. It is a fantasy type show and I had tried reading the book and couldn't get into it and thought I would do better with the DVD-not! The DVD's kept skipping and or freezing up and I was really disappointed overall.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Pat, do you know about using windex on a paper towel to clean the DVD's - I've had 2 DVD's so far with skipping, but the windex took care of it.

Children of a Lesser God, only saw bits and pieces before, so watched the whole thing. Very good.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I Heart Huckabees --- yuck

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Paula-thanks I will try that before I send them back.(I didn't know that).

Pat

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

"In the Name of the Father", 1993.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Pete Postlethwaite, Emma Thompson. Very powerful, true story of Irishman Gerry Conlon accused and convicted of an IRA bombing in London, and his road to innocence.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Crash --- a really, really good movie but, oh, so sad.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

This month I saw "Coffee and Cigarettes" - so-so except I adored Alfred Molina and Steve (the British comedian with the spoof talk/variety show).
"P.S." - I was disappointed in this. I love Topher Grace and Laura Linney, as well as the director's previous picture "Rodger Dodger"; this movie was also just so-so.
"Ice Princess" - formulaic but fine to watch with a young girl; very clean; I enjoyed Joan Cusack-a breath of fresh air in a pre-teen movie usually filled with strict stereotypes.
"This Boy's Life" - fabulous. I want to read the book now.

Tonight, "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" - hope it will be good.

"Crash" and "Rwanda" are movies I want to see but am afraid to be overly depressed about them. Real-life political issues are difficult, I get very low over the state of humankind. Nevertheless, I realize they are currently the best movies out there, particularly "Crash," and I will have to get on the stick to see them.

RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I bought the DVD Phantom of the Opera and watched it last night. We had been to see it at the movies and wasn't that impressed, but for some reason last night re-watching it I enjoyed it much more. I think some movies affect me that way-I recall having the same feelings about Chicago and it became one of my all time favorites.

RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Pat,

I find I often enjoy watching musicals more than once and enjoy them more the second or third go around. Sounds like you may be the same...something about getting used to the music I guess.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Hey nosyrosie, what did you think of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"?

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Hi, dynomutt.

Well, I had high hopes for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but didn't really enjoy it too much. Didn't have cohesiveness, I thought. I didn't like what Sam Rockwell and Mos Def were doing, and they were two leads (Sam Rockwell was trying hard, though, and you had to give him credit). I did like the British guy who plays Arthur Dent, and really liked the girl who played the vice president (Dominique Johnson, I think). Bill Nighy was wonderfully droll. Worth seeing, I guess, but I'm glad I didn't see it at the movies.

I forgot to say I watched The Hours this month, too, and it was better the second time around.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Pat, I couldn't agree more about "Phantom of the Opera". As a matter of fact, we looked closely for the lip sinc(sp?), and it wasn't there on DVD. One movie for the collection, for sure.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Rose --

I agree with you on that movie. I also didn't like the fact that they messed around with the plot from the book.

It was weird but when I was watching the movie, I had this bizarre feeling that the book was being READ to me! Unfortunately, I think a lot of the gags in the book read better than being shown on the screen. I saw the movie in a cineplex and you could tell who in the audience had read the book and who had not. Those who had read it were either howling in laughter or smiling in recognition while the others were looking around in perplexed incomprehension as to why all these people were laughing .....

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Since we don't have a TV category - I am posting this here-

Last night I watched the season opener of Commander In Chief with Geena Davis as VP taking over the Presidency on the death of the President. This looks like it could be a good show especially if it keeps up the tensions with her major adversary played by Donald Sutherland who plays the Speaker of the House.

Anyone watch it?

Pat

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I saw a movie at the theater called "An Unfinished Life" with Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, and J-Lo. Not Bad.

The roles the actors played didn't seem like much of a stretch from their earlier roles and/or their own personal lives. Redford played a rancher. Freeman was a supporting friend who had all the answers and offered thoughtful advice (Does he ever play anything else?). And, J-Lo, well she seemed to need a man, but couldn't find a good one. The whole tone of the movie was a little "Lifetime-ish" to me, but it was good enough to watch.

Sherwood, try this thread:

2005 Fall TV Season, What do you think of the new shows?

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Thanks Beth - I did find it-later, it had sunk low on the list!

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

We just watched 'Ghostbusters', bit of a retro trip - I ordered it for the teenie daughters who loved it. The look is incredibly 80s, and I don't think I've ever seen so much gratuitous smoking in a movie!
Favourite line - Dan Akroyd: Listen, can you smell that?
Other than that, nowhere near as funny as I remembered.

Pat, I watched 'Gormenghast' on tv when it first showed. Looked great, but didn't work. Lots of very wooden acting.

Hitchhiker's Guide: I would recommend listening to the original radio show instead. We took it on a long journey with us, kept the whole family happy (only the dog didn't get it).

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I want that recording! Query: Brit cds play okay in American players? I've run into probs with DVDs and VCR tapes and don't want to get burned again.

For some reason, I've been on a movie hiatus since June. Watched Frida yesterday and now wonder why. I loved it! Even found Alfred Molina sexy. Who knew?

Just came off of a Farscape Marathon. Comfort food. Makes me happy.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Hitchhiker's Guide: A total dud, not to mention a waste of my time and money. Very disappointing, imho.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Notorious. How mores have changed! It takes a lot more to make a body notorious today. Ingrid Bergman was so incredibly lovely. And watching this I have to say that she blew Cary Grant out of the water as far as acting goes. I enjoy Grant tremendously - he is extremely attractive and I always like his movies. But I'm wondering if he could really act. Did he ever step outside his comfort zone in his roles?

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Chris, I think there are no regional differences in audio CDs at all - I have bought lots directly from the USA (things that aren't available here), no problems.
Is Farscape still going? I gave up in the third series - the first one was brilliant, the second a little less, and then it looked like they ran out of money and ideas at the same time...
We watched 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' again last night, one of my all-time top favourites, now I'm starting to read the Odyssey. I'm sure I can get through it if I just keep visualising George Clooney...
Finally, no I don't think Cary Grant could act. Wasn't he an acrobat originally? Great comedic talent, but not real acting.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

His looks and presence made up for it, imho.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Saw Serenity last weekend and loved it. Then again, I'm a Firefly geek, so I was predisposed. I haven't a clue as to how it will play with others.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Chris I remember when Firefly was on a year or so ago and I enjoyed it-then it disappeared. I only just heard that it was back and picked up by another studio, so I will look for it again, especially since the StarGate shows & Battlestar Gall. are done for now.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I watched Greenfingers last night-Thank you Paula!
I am a sucker for English movies anyway and this one with two of my favorites, Helen Mirren & Clive Owen was a real sleeper!

Pat

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Pat, the Firefly series is over. With any luck Serenity, the movie, will make enough to start a franchise.

Watched Wimbleton and was totally charmed. I like Kirsten Dunst, and I've had the biggest crush on Paul Bettany since I first set eyes on him in A Knight's Tale.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Nothing of interest on TV last night-for me.
So re-watched National Treasure.Too bad they don't make more movies that are good adventures that the whole family can watch!

Pat

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Glad you liked it Pat! Especially interesting to those who garden :-D

RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Saw four movies this weekend :

Being Julia -- great script and great acting. Annette Bening is amazing when she's got good material to work with. I'll have to remember to stay away from older actresses. ;-)

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story -- I can't help it. I was laughing throughout the movie. Reminded me a lot of the Three Stooges -- must be a guy thing. I know, I know. The movie was quite stupid but I found it quite funny. Let's call it one of my guilty pleasures. (And Ben Stiller's quite funny)

The Incredibles -- saw this for the fourth time. I'm going to buy this darned movie. It's funny, it's charming, and it's got superheroes. What else is there to say?

A Shark's Tale -- funny but not that funny. I got the feeling that they were trying too hard. It pales in comparison to The Incredibles.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I've been on a bigtime movie kick lately and thinking it might have to do with the time of year or something..? Anyway, as a family we watched "Something Wicked This Way Comes" starring Jason Robards. Loved it! Perfect movie for October as that's when the story takes place, plus our small town was having a carnival this past weekend. LOL! Also saw "A Watcher in the Woods" with Bette Davis (Disney flick). Quite atmospheric and a little spooky too! "House of Sand and Fog" turned out to be a shocker for me, and have heard that the movie was much better than the book. Now isn't that something as it's usually the other way around! I wouldn't know as I haven't read it....? Enjoyed the film, but was depressed afterwards.

Next on the list-----Gun Crazy. Has low ratings, but still trying to figure out if this is the movie with the snake handling scene in it. Will let you know once I find out:)

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Watched 'The Assassination of Richard Nixon', with Sean Penn, Naomi Watts. Interesting, based on true events. Not the assassination of course, but the attempt was made in the early 70's, with the plan to crash a passenger jet into the White House, by an American individual. Watts and Penn are good, especially seeing Sean play a nerdy loser.

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I was looking forward to SecondHand Lions - but it never arrived from Netflix...my other movie arrived last Friday..so I was disappointed and had to report it "missing in the mail" yesterday ....

Pat

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

"The English Patient" (yet again). I just love this film. No wonder it won so many awards when it came out about a decade ago. And I adore the novel from which it is taken. (a classic, IMO)

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

I saw "Eternal Beloved" (1994), casted by Gary Oldman directed by Bernard Rose

The untold love story of Ludwig van Beethoven... Very intense ...

caruso2323
Looking through HOT !

 o
RE: Sept. - What Are You Watching?

Actually, that's 'Immortal Beloved' - caruso, but anyhoo- I agree with your summation.
