No thread on 'Serenity' yet? How odd.
Watched it yesterday with the whole family - we all thought it was brilliant, but not quite as brilliant as the series, mainly because less funny.
I would be really interested to know how those unfamiliar with 'Firefly' would view 'Serenity' - to us, a lot of the impact came from our familiarity with the characters. |

| You know I loved it. This is grand adventure, space opera at its finest. I love Whedon's irreverence. The last shot was just perfect Whedon, don't you think? Part of the problem with it as a movie is that after we have grown to love all the crew through the series, there just wasn't enough screen time for each. Did you think they butched Simon up for the movie? He came across much less delicate than in the tv series, I thought. I just like the entire approach to the future in Serenity. It hasn't been cleansed the way Star Trek would have it. (Ducking for cover now). People are still people, some with more technology, some with less. And I think the whole Reconstruction vibe works well, too. |

Chris, I agree with you on pretty much everything you say: Final shot, Simon being 'butched up', and definitely not enough time with each character, which is why I wonder how it would feel to someone who hasn't seen 'Firefly'. Definitely not enough time with Wash!!! I don't know what you mean by 'Reconstruction vibe' - splainy (as Buffy would say). My one quibble would be the opening - the way Simon rescues River is not as he told it in the first episode. Of course he might have been modest about his own part, that would be in keeping with his character. |

| Reconstruction period after the Civil War/War of Northern Agression/War Between the States here in the US was a wild period of history. Totally lawless in many parts of the South. That was when some of the famous family feuds were at their peak. It was also the time of the Wild West. The cowboy motif is clear in Serentiy, add in a period after a war with the defeated brought back into the alliance/union but disenfranchised (as were the former southern leaders) and one gets a world very much like we see on the frontier planets. Just MHO. The rescue seemed off, I just couldn't remember details from the show. I haven't broken down and bought the DVD yet. |

Thanks for the explanation, Chris! Again I am in total agreement with you - we (all 4 of us are Firefliers) realised that it was the post-Civil War period, Mal's attire is quite clear on that - but I didn't know it was called Reconstruction period! Go buy the DVD. The shows deserve and reward repeated viewing, and you get them in the right sequence, plus some sweet extras. - We had to buy the DVD as 'Firefly' never ran on the normal channels in the UK, only on the SciFi channel which is not part of the normal package! |

| Warning: Contains some spoilers for the movie! I was really happy to go see this movie, especially after waiting so long for it. I was a Firefly fan as well though, and I agree I would love to hear the opinion from a non-fan who's seen this movie. I think Joss did a remarkable job in making a movie that would be fresh and new for existing fans and yet introducing the characters and universe to non-fans of the series. It must have been very difficult to do. Loved the resolution as to the origins of the Reavers. As for Simon rescuing River, I don't know if there was that much detail in the series. I just remember Simon mentioning that he had to put a lot of money in the right hands. That could have meant to gain access to her in the way he did in the movie. Now I'll have to watch the series again to make sure I'm remembering right! The villain -- totally scary, and very well acted. His coldness and lack of conscience made him even scarier. I loved the discussion between Mal and Zoe, where they're talking about the state of the ship but it's really about how Zoe is -- "She's damaged sir, but she'll fly." I'm sorta disappointed the movie hasn't been doing better. I was hoping maybe another movie could be made if Serenity did well. It's proven difficult to let go of such great characters and intriguing story. There was so much left to tell. At least we got this much. |

| Dorie Ann, are you saying there won't be sequels? I thought this was just the beginning of a whole new saga... The villain (The Operator) in the movie is a nice continuation of Jubal Early in the last 'Firefly' episode, I thought. Not quite as insane, but similarly obsessive/single-minded; also with the slightly archaic vocabulary. |

| I hear that if Serentiy makes more than $60M, the studio has promised Whedon 2 more movies. I don't know if the one non-Firefly one he is working on now counts toward the 2. |

| Yeah, from what I've heard, I don't think it's been doing well enough to call for more. You never know, though. It could be a sleeper hit from word of mouth. On the bright side, my brother hasn't seen the movie yet so I'm going to see it again with him this weekend. |

| The reviews were good. Ebert and Ropert gave it 2 thumbs up, David Edelstein from Slate thought it was terrific, then sought out the DVDs of the TV show and thought the series was even better than the movie. |

| Well, I finally saw this a couple nights ago and enjoyed it. No, I have never seen any of the Firefly episodes--nor did I even know they existed before reading about the movie. I just like drama/sci-fi's and this was getting good reviews, so I went for it. I had no problems following the story. Everything seemed spelled out enough for those not familiar with the series. Here are my thoughts: I really liked the charcter of River and I thought the actress that played her did a wonderful job. Simon, on the other hand, seemed a little off base. First off, after the Operative's comment about the look of love on Simon's face, I was kind of feeling some incestuous tones with his feelings towards River. Secondly, I thought he was too pretty and possible gay so his hook up with Kaylee just didn't seem right. I can see her having a crush on him, but I just didn't go for the reciprocation. They just didn't look right together. Are they a couple in the series? I really like Mal, and thought his character was developed well. The story itself was good but I was expecting something a little more supernatural or some kind of real twist (For a while I thought maybe Kaylee was on the bad side!). My favorite scene was the whole gun shot/Inara buringing 'insense' one. I was surprised at the comedic tone. I thought it really added to the movie. And, I found myself actually clapping in some parts which I can't remember ever doing in any other movie. I think River's character could really expand and provide for many more stories. What did the series stories focus on, and did they take place before or after the movie time period? |
RE: Serenity

| The movie takes place after the series, which focuses more on the relationships between the crew and survival on the edge of the space frontier. What does it say that the series was canceled with only 11 of the 14 episodes aired, that the movie is a flop (hard to write, but facts are facts), but that the DVD of Firefly, the series, is #10 on Amazon today? I just can't get my mind around all three points. |
RE: Serenity

| Sounds to me that they may have a very intenese, but very small fan following. The movie may have been a flop "numbers" wise, but it is getting really good reviews for the most part, from both crititcs and the normal public. I think the soap opera sci-fi mix just doesn't sit well with most. I think most like their sci-fi's more like big hollywood productions with strange characters they can 'sell', and they like their dramas either sappier or deeper... The mix of the two (sci-fi and soap opera mix) may not appeal to many nowadays. Just my guess. |

| The DVD release is scheduled for December 20th. Merry Christmas to me! I can't wait to see all the "extras" goodies, especially the commentary. Joss Whedon has always given fantastic commentary. |

| From the article about Serentiy on the SciFi Wire I discovered: "DVD's various extras, which include an easter egg: a featurette about the making of the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial that appears in the film. "In the main menu, if you play around with the buttons you'll find a featurette of the Fruity Oaty Bar," Peristere revealed. (From the main menu highlight "play," then press left, which will highlight a marker on the right side of the menu; press enter to see the featurette.) "It's all a lot of fun," he said." |

| Darn it-I forgot to watch the bonus features before I retuned it to Netflix...drat...drat! |
RE: Serenity

Thanks, Chris! I have to wait till 27 February before the DVD is available in the UK... (insert favourite Chinese swear word) I read a theory somewhere that Whedon was well aware that he might only get to make the one Serenity movie, which is why he went straight to the end of the saga - the revelations about the origin of the reevers/reivers/reavers (any idea on the correct spelling? all three come up with results on Google!) - and that he would fill in the 8 months between the final Firefly episode and Serenity if he were given another movie opportunity... sounds sort of plausible to me. |
RE: Serenity

| Reavers is they way I think I saw it captioned. Here is a link to the article I quoted above. Apparently they are looking at the DVD sales of Serenity to see if it makes another film viable. I liked the extras on the DVD. Whedon explained, reasonably, a couple of the plot points that I didn't like. |
