Coming late to LOST

I didn't watch this show when it was first running. I remembered a truly dreadful television show from the early 1970's called The New People, based on the lost survivors of a plane crash and I thought it would be like that. Actually, I have since read that both The New People and Gilligan's Island are inspirations for the concept.

Later I caught an episode my daughter was watching and was intrigued. I started asking her question after question. Needless to say she was annoyed so I gave it up, deciding that I was just too late. Then hearing that the final season is coming up I decided to watch all the past shows. I've spent the past month of so watching all of them now except the two-part 5th season finale. I'll see that when it becomes available. Now I'm ready to go forward.

I am well and truly hooked. I have to admit that I am completely fascinated by this show.

Thanks, should have done so myself.

We came to it late too. We started watching what was available on DVD earlier this year. We haven't watched the last (2009) season that ran Jan - May, and I guess it starts up again in Jan 2010. Is the 2009 season now available on DVD? I haven't checked.

I believe that the season five DVD is going to be released in early December around the 8th or 9th.

Some of the season five episodes can be watched on the network internet site, but they are riddled with commercials. Having grown accustomed to watching without interruption, I found them intrusive. The DVD experience is so much nicer.

Rose, Georgia ... still around? Did you watch last night? The cm were a pain in the ass, but at this point I'm not waiting for a DVD.

I came late too. Watched all 5 seasons at abc.com last May & June. Major addiction!

After years of listening to DS and DDIL rave about Lost, I decided to jump in this season, catching up on previous seasons via Netflix and watching the new shows as well. DH thought this was pretty funny, but we were hooked from the first episode. Now I dare not flip on a DVD without him.

Having a pretty good imagination and being willing to go with sci-fi, it's been okay so far to follow both parts of the story. What a great series!

I had to miss watching last night because of my book club meeting. Real life trumps fiction (though sometimes just barely). Fortunately they have been showing the previous week's episode at 8 PM with the current week's episode at 9 PM. If they continue that next week, I'll be fine.

Having watched seasons 1-5 on DVD, I must admit to finding the stupid commercials to be quite an irritation. I don't watch a lot of TV, usually just when chopping vegetables for supper.

Rose, you can watch it on ABC.com if you don't feel like waiting.

Sable, I've never been a sci-fi fan, but LOST totally grabbed me from the pilot. Thinking about buying the whole DVD set once the series ends. Dh wants to see it and I could easily watch it again.

Natal - I've never been a sci-fi fan either, except for Star Trek (because of DH), but I can deal with shape-shifting and time travel. Also, the series stays fairly grounded in reality by using flashbacks to tell the back stories of the characters.

What first intrigued me, before we started watching, was reading that "Ben" is played by Michael Emerson. Emerson guest-starred as the villain on my favorite episode of L&O:Criminal Intent. His final scene with Goren is for me unforgettable.

Is everyone aware that the final episode is Sunday night May 23rd instead of the usual Tuesday night?

RE: Coming late to LOST

I'm so glad it is over and we finally know what it was all about I don't have to bother watching reruns or getting DVDs I kind of thought it was along those lines.

So disappointed! Ending left me feeling empty. Six seasons and that's what we get?

RE: Coming late to LOST

Actually I loved the ending.

To me it was very satisfying, and I have been thinking about various aspects of it for several days now. It is true that not all the questions were answered, but that would happen in a book of this length too. There, though, authors have a chance to go back and edit out inconsistencies before they were made public.

Natal - I'm interested in your reaction. Not that there's anything wrong with being disappointed. Indeed, I had told my various Lostie friends that I could put up with any ending - it was all a dream or they never crashed or they were dead from the start or they all lived normal happily-ever-after lives - but I would not tolerate Jack's death. So they killed Jack. That was hard to take. But perfect story symetry and beautifully done. I cried buckets for the last 45 minutes!

Looking back, the whole thing was heavy with Christian symbolism and probably understandable to Hindus as well. But for those of other religions and for non-believers, maybe it was just too obscure and at the end, flat.

Namaste.

Sable, I loved it until the final 10-15 minutes. I would rather they never have crashed than to find they were already dead. I am a Christian, but not Catholic and purgatory isn't part of my belief system. I just felt cheated in the end.

This except from a fan's recap pretty much sums it up:

In the end, the electromagnetically charged mystery island gave way to a hug-filled waiting room leading to a pan-spiritual afterlife, led by the aptly named Christian Shephard. Whew!

It’s a daring way to end "Lost" — leaving plenty of questions unanswered and winking out on what has to be its least satisfying twist to date.

Here is a link that might be useful: That was the end of 'LOST'!? Are you kidding us?

RE: Coming late to LOST

Natal - I was under the impression that they met in the church after living out their lives. I guess that it's part of sci-fi that one must accept certain things as being permanently obscure - one reason I don't much care for sci-fi, except for *this* sci-fi. Bascially, like Rosefolly, I loved it.

At least talking about this is better than that Al/Tipper thing going on elsewhere! ;-)

RE: Coming late to LOST

I think it stopped being about Al & Tipper a long time ago. Just another chance to sling arrows. And unfortunately all too predictable. ;)
