| I just watched a delightul animated version of Scrooge called "The Stingiest Man in Town" Here is some of the cast:
Walter Matthau .... Ebenezer Scrooge (voice)
Tom Bosley .... B.A.H. Humbug (voice)
Theodore Bikel .... Marley's Ghost (voice)
Robert Morse .... Young Scrooge (voice)
Dennis Day .... Nephew Fred (voice)
Paul Frees .... Ghost of Christmas Past/Ghost of Christmas Present (voice)
It was delightful and wish I'd taped it to add to my collection. It was made in 1978.
Anyone have any favorite "Scrooges"? |

Even if I wasn't in it I'd say the version that we traditionally do here at ASF is the best I've ever seen. It's not only entirely faithful (it consists of nearly every word of the original book including the narration which is split up betweeen all of the characters) but also filled with wonderful insanely catchy musical numbers most all of which are based on English folk songs and carols of the period.

Wish I could see a production of it Spam. I bet it is a real winner.

Bah, Humbug! has been a favorite of mine since I saw it on TV in 1994. Luckily, I taped it, because I don't think it has ever been released on DVD. Describing in print never makes it sound as good as it is since it's only two actors standing in front of lecterns reading out loud to an audience! But those actors are Martin Sheen and James Earl Jones and what a marvelous job they do. They take turns narrating; Martin Sheen takes all the supporting parts (Crachit, Fezziwig, Marley's Ghost, Tiny Tim, etc.); and Jones the Voice is, of course, Ebenezer Scrooge -- and how perfect he sounds! I imagine this is the sort of live entertainment that spellbinded audiences before the advent of moving pictures and canned sound, but I'm so glad both were invented and progressed to the point that I could record this performance. I hope it will be released on DVD someday because I fear my precious tape will not last.

As much as I *want* to like Alastair Sim, I find the acting style horribly stagy. It's all theatrical affectations (shaking hands splayed to the sky, etc.) And post-transformation, I find Sim to still be somewhat scary. The best version I've ever seen?? Without a doubt, George C. Scott. Worth the price of the DVD just to hear that screechy graveyard grate that supplies the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come's voice. LOVE that!!!!!!!!!!!

Patrick Stewart did it well maybe 10 years ago. Love his English accent and deep voice. I also have an unusual audio version called Marley's Christmas. Told from the point of view Scrooge's dead partner Jacob Marley. The actor who recorded it played all the parts himself. Quite a good production!

It wouldn't be Christmas without watching the Alister Sim version in our house. For camp and corny, we like the Scrooge with Albert Finney. He's now as old as he's portrayed older in the film!

Frieda, The lectern reading is actually how the performance tradition of this novel began. Dickens himself toured it all over the world for about 20 years playing all the characters.

We are watching a fascinating series on BBC TV following the travels of Charles Dickens through America in 1842. It features the English actress Miriam Margolyes, well-known for her 'renditions' of Dickens' work. She follows the route he took as far as possible, train, boat etc. and visits the factories, libraries, prisons, the Perkins School for the Blind and so on where CD spent time. This week saw her reaching the Mississippi, and St Lousis with a very sad visit to Cairo, a dying riverside town. It is wonderful to see how enthusiastic her US audiences are. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Dickens in America

I find most versions of the 'Christmas Carol' too sentimental, so it's got to be the Muppet version for me. Even so, I sob uncontrollably when Scrooge is shown the future without a little green froglet Tiny Tim. In an ideal world, we'd have the muppet version with George C. Scott as Scrooge, though.

One of my favorites )and I'm glad I taped it) is "An American Christmas Carol" with Henry Winkler (Fonzie)

There is an old black and white that I love the most.. I don't know who is in it.. I always catch it at odd spots during the movie.. But somehow I have managed to see the whole thing.. And I have managed to catch some of it every year... Omg.. It is the Alastair Sim version that I love.. I did a google search!! Yea... Now I know what to look for!!

Jazzie, I think that is the best one of the old ones.

Actually, I have two, and they are both animated. "Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol" for the songs. "Ringle, Ringle" "The Cratchit Family Dinner Song" The Bandit Song" "Winter Was Warm" "It's Great to Be Back on Broadway" "All Alone in the World" But, the voice talent is not too shabby neither. Paul Frees, of course. June Foray Royal Dano Morey Amsterdam Jim Backus as Mister Magoo as Ebenezer Scrooge And "Mickey's Christmas Carol" w/ Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer Scrooge, of course. Mickey Mouse as Bob Cratchit Minnie Mouse as Mrs. Cratchit Donald Duck as Nephew Fred Daisy Duck as Belle Goofy as Jacob Marley Willie the Giant as the Ghost of Christmas Present Jimny Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past Pete as the Ghost of Christmas Future and just about every animated Disney character up to that time, putting in a cameo appearance. It also has the historical significance as this would be the last time Clarence Nash would voice Donald Duck in a film.

"It also has the historical significance as this would be the last time Clarence Nash would voice Donald Duck in a film." Thanks for that bit of info. Didn't know it. I liked both of those too.

You'll welcome, Minnie TX. It is nice to hear from someone who liked those two, as much as I do.
