I have to say that the clips look fantastic and that it looks to be both an action fest and a tearjerker. But 3 hours??? What were they thinking?

I have seen the previews a couple of times at the movies and it does look like Jurassic Park meets King Kong...I plan to wait for the DVD as we are getting a big screen HDTV (finally) for our family Christmas present! Pat

I saw it last night! Definitely has the marks of a Peter Jackson movie, similar landscapes, dark menacing elements. The islanders are shocking. He paid homage to a lot of the original's scenes...Ann stealing the apple, the dual with the T-rex, the large log over the canyon, even the necklace left on the boat by an islander. I had read about the actor in the ape costume studying apes for a year, and he nailed it, better than you could hope for. Naomi had a hard job, having to act to many blue screens etc., but she did very well. A lot of way unbelieveable stuff, like surviving harrowing romps through the jungle, and the streets of New York in winter, without a scratch, but it's fantasy after all. I knew it was 3 hours + going in, but it didn't lay heavy on me. Stunning stunning special effects. It's actually a good family film...no cursing, explicit sex, or gore. The islanders may frighten the little ones, but that's about the extent of it. It's worth going to see.

I saw it and it's as good as the 1933 original. Very exciting. The three hours flew by.

Paula - I appreciate your review, especially reading that it's low on the gore factor. I avoid gory movies and was worried about this one. I have a question - how loud is it? My husband has tinnitis and we've been concerned that the sound might blast him out of the theater. Otherwise, we'd definitely be going, rather than waiting for the DVD. I've a feeling that this one needs to seen in the theater. Am I right? But is it terribly noisy?

Sable - the movies in theatres are LOUD in general aren't they! During the Kong-battle-with-others (won't give away too much) it's loud, and he yells a lot. The sound level is right up there with the roars from dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. Maybe bring some earmuffs lol!

Paula, I have to ask - did you cry?

:-D .... just a tiny bit o' wellin up - Actually, I was missing the fact that Fay Wray was supposed to have the part at the end saying ..."was beauty killed the beast", but she died before they could film it.

3 hours you say? Well, if time flew by when I watched the LOTR trilogy, this should be a pizzocake!

You mean there was an actor playing KONG??? What a great movie. I think the three hours and some minutes flew by. It was a great love story between Beauty and the beast with the emphasis on the beast. Great photography and special effects. I hope that was makeup on those islanders. I sure wouldn't want to meet any of them in a dark alley. A young couple sat behind Ds and me with a baby that couldn't have been more than 10 months old. "Oh NO" I thought I could see where we'd have to get tickets for a different playing but to my delight anytime the baby even mumbled the mom got up and took her/him out to the lobby. I couldn't imagine bringing even a 5 year old to see this one. Some of the scenes could be pretty frightening because of the special effects in the jungle. I'd say don't miss it and try to see it on the big screen. I always bring ear plugs with me and used them today but it wasn't that bad. I don't think the actors overpowered the story or the filming. Good Show. |

Andy Sirkus.. AKA: Gollum "played" the ape... He wore a blue suit with markers, did the ape movements, and they overlaid him with gorilla computer graphics... They did the same thing to make Gollum in LOTR.... I can't wait to see Kong at the theatre...

What??? as I've said before "That was a man playing that ape??" He sure was good!!!I think you'll get a kick out of him on "the ice" or did I say that beforre too?

The Kong movie from the 1970s, although not great, was not nearly as bad as its reputation. I watched it a few nights ago. It was hardly a masterpiece but it wasn't Heaven's Gate either. Haven't seen the new version yet but the technological advances available to filmmakers will surely make for a better movie.

I think it might have been called "racist" because of the depiction of the natives who lived on Skull Island.

Saw it this past Friday night and I must say I was blown away! I loved it much more tha I expected to. Every scene is a visual masterpiece. Jackson definitely paid homage to the original in certain ways (I particularly like the credits.) I also liked the fact that there was little dialogue throughout, and yet still managed to capture your attention. My only criticisms: a few scenes could have been shorter, the natives and the bugs. And the natives are definitely scary. But other than that, it was amazing. My vertigo kicked in 100 times!

King Kong was fantastic. Saw it last week. It wasn't quite as emotional as I was expecting, and definitely was cleaned up (Every time something gory was about to happen, the camera panned away). Kong was amazingly convincing as a gorilla, reminded me of documentaries I've seen of people interacting with gorillas in zoos and the wild. Andy Serkis spent so much time playing Kong that now, when he gets up off the floor, instead of pushing off with the palms of his hands (Like most people), he pushes off with his knuckles like a gorilla does.

A Christmas present in our house was the original Kong on DVD. Has a whole separate DVD for hours of extras. So I found out why Peter Jackson did all those creatures in the new Kong at the bottom of the ravine (after the shipmates fell off the log), apparently extra creatures were intended for the original, but it was cut. The lost footage has never been found, much to Jackson's lament (he's a Kong fanatic), so he made up a 'lost sequence' of his own, and shows how he made it as well. It's also revealed why the men running towards the log are looking back frantically over their shoulders. It never made sense to me, always thought something had been omitted, and sure enough it was. I won't spoil it for anyone curious. There is much focus on director Merian C. Cooper and his lifelong sidekick Ernest B. Schoedsack, and how Robert Armstrong and Bruce Cabot were carefully screened to portray these special adventurers. Ray Harryhausen is interviewed, as well as the Peter Jackson ensemble.
