I just watched most of "Finding Neverland" What a great movie. Our cable Co is giving us a free week of Starz and it played earlier. It is coming on again at 1:15am and I'm going to tape it. What a nice performance by Johnny Depp.

Watched 'Labyrinth' yesterday - this time of year always feels like the perfect season for fairy tales. Hoping to fit in 'Nightmare before Christmas' (one of my alltime favourites!) and 'Edward Scissorhands' (younger daughter cries buckets every time, but loves it) in the next 10 days.

My Netflix movie last night was Valmont with Colin Firth. I enjoyed it much more that the "other" version Dangerous Liasons.
I just won the book on EBay and look forward to reading it and comparing it to the two movies.

BTW I forgot to mention that while at the movies last week seeing The Narnia movie there was a preview of the next Johnny Depp/Pirates movie, it looked good, so here's hoping! I really enjoyed him Pirates of the Caribbean...Orlando Bloom is also in the new one-due out next summer.

My Netflix movie last night was Croupier starring Clive Owen also had Alex Kingston and Virginia McKee, it was very well acted and had an interesting ending! Anyone see it?

Just watched "Millions" on DVR, sweet little movie.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

"Touchez Pas au Grisbi", An old French mobster classic. Lots of fun!

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Hi Pat, yes "Croupier" is a good one. Clive Owen fits the part well. We have put it on queue for a second go around.

RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Bill-I am enjoying my Netflix membership! by doing searches on fav actors I have been able to discover the availability of movies & TV series (BBC) that we never heard of! I remember many years ago my Mother(In England)telling me how much they were enjoying a series on TV called Darling Buds of May which starred a very young Catherine Zeta-Jones, unfortunately we never got it on our PBS - but now I am able to order the entire series. Also a friend in England was telling me about a Judi Dench movie she had just seen, Netflix doesn't have it yet, but will be getting it so I was able to "save" it...can't recall the title something with "Mrs Henderson" in it! Just watched an old Bob Hoskins movie on the British channel on Direct TV in which he plays a gangster in Ireland (I think it is from the 1980s) and everything falls apart on him at the end. Can't recall the name of the movie as it was on in the wee hours when nothing good was on ESPN.

RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Reggie, that sounds like The Long Good Friday with Helen Mirren and Bob Hoskins. I enjoyed that movie when I watched (years ago). We watched Sin City the other night and last week we watched Edward Scissorhands. My husband really liked some of Marv's lines from Sin City. When I rent from Netflix, I usually try to rent two movies we adults can watch and one movie we can watch with our kids.

Pat, it is 'Mrs Henderson Presents' about the woman who started London's Windmill Theatre famous for the tag 'We Never Close' and the showing of 'tasteful' nude scenes (only allowed as long as the girls never moved). Quite a lightweight flick, but an interesting period piece ('30's-40's). A pity Bob Hoskins has trouble keeping his Cockney accent at bay . . . . . . . . . 'The Darling Buds of May' from the books by H E Bates was shown over here at the start of the 1st Gulf War, during a very dismal January, and I remember its jaunty style and unbelievabley colourful setting ('50's England was very dour and drab) plus the very natural charms of the young C Z-Jones had an uplifting affect.

RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

I just rented "Ladies in Lavender." I liked it so much that I watched it twice through. Judy Dench and Maggie Smith are both marvels! A very impressive, yet subtle story, set in gorgeous Cornwall. Then I watched an old favorite, "To Kill a Mockingbird". I think anyone who wishes to understand the deep south of the USA ought to either see this one or read the book.

RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

I saw a very interesting documentary the other night entitled "Game Over". It's about the Kasparov-Deep Blue chess match in 1997 which Kasparov lost (after winning all of his previous encounters with computers!). It seems as if Kasparov was not too happy with IBM because, from the sounds of it, they engaged in psychological warfare against him. Also, he contends that the computer he played in game 2 of the series wasn't just a computer -- it may have had human help!

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

What channel was that Kasparov-Deep Blue Doc on?

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Georgia Peach, Thanks for the info on the Long Good Friday. I picked it up about 15 minutes into it. It is a good gangster movie although I could have done without one gory slashing scene. There was another good British movie on British TV on the sattelite called "Hope and Glory" by director John Boorman about being a teenager in the UK during WW11. The topic does not sound so interesting but it was quite a good movie.

RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Minnie -- the documentary is a feature-length documentary that was showing on The Movie Network. You might be able to find it in some video stores. Oh, and after every match between Kasparov and Deep Blue that Kasparov won, he always accepted their request for a rematch. However, after the 1997 match (which Deep Blue won 2 games to one with 3 draws in the six game series), IBM refused Kasparov's request for a rematch.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Here is a famous joke from the Kasparov-Deep Blue match: What did Deep Blue say after defeating chess champion Gary Kasparov? Answer: "I'm going to www.disneyworld.com".

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Thanks, Reggie, for reminding me of "Hope and Glory", one of my all time favorite films! I need to rent that one again. I seem to be in an older movie mode: yesterday re-visited "Chariots of Fire" and today will watch the original "Goodbye Mr. Chips" with Greer Garson.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

I am still recovering from "Iris", and Judy Dench of course. What is significant is how proud some of the 'elderly' actors are to show every new crease and fold as if to say, "look at me, I am alive and well." Tonight is was "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill". Just released, it is a 2005 documentary about.......I had better not tell. I do have a picture of Coit Tower on a bedroom wall, so being there again was special. The history of Coit Tower itself is interesting! Such a wonderful (and expensive) part of the world. Being sentimental, the documentary gets a *****. See it to the end.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Chariots of Fire was a very good movie that stands the test of time. Another movie from that era that is still good all these years later is Breaker Morant. I can't recall any of the actors in the movie but it is still timely today.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Reggie, I think "Chariots of Fire" is a small masterpiece. No wonder it won so many awards in the 1980's. Another great film from that time period that you might like is "Gallipoli", about 2 Australian boys in World War I. I'd say it is a classic....

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

What a list of great older movies! I remember after seeing Chariots of Fire I went out and bought the tape of the music by Vangelis and played it constantly in the car! I remember really enjoying Hope & Glory about a family that survived the bombings of WWII and Iris-Judi Dench was superb in Iris....Pat

RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Just listened to an interesting BBC radio talk with Anthony Minghella and 'his' composer Gabriel Yared about the development of the musical sound-track for '..Mr Ripley' 'English Patient' 'Cold Mountain' etc, all of which A M takes very seriously, commissioning them before his films go into production. Click on the site below and go to 'Listen Again' - to the most recent edition (ie Friday 30th) to listen. If you scroll on down to the bottom of the right hand side to the 'See Also' there are many other items on films/drama from the Beeb.

Here is a link that might be useful: Anthony Minghella's Film Music

That is an interesting site and will be a lot of fun to look at in the wee small hours of the morning!!

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Just finished watching March of the Penguins on our new HDTV-outstanding with gorgeous photography-surely it will win an award in the documentary category?...........Pat

RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Woodnymph, Thanks for the suggestion on Gallipoli. I got it through a discount DVD place online(only 1 day until arrival!) and it was really good. I believe that Mel Gibson played one of the young soldiers but he looked so young then I have to check the credits to make sure it's really Mel Gibson. But the movie was really good.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

A friend and I went out to see "Memoirs of a Geisha." Exquisitely done and a very compelling story. Thumbs up.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Woodnymph2 - I've been pondering seeing Geisha, but don't want to be dissapointed, as I've just finished the book and really liked it. Was hard to put down. Did you read the book, if so, how did it compare?

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Thanks for the tip on "Memoirs of a Geisha". NetFlix hasn't announced a release date as of today. I am on the waiting list.

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

Paula, I read the book quite a while ago. I would say the film successfully captured the spirit of the novel. I found it quite compelling to watch and the movie, although long, went very fast. I'd say, go see it....

 o
RE: December Movies - What Are You Watching?

The NY Times review was not favorable to Memoirs of a Geisha. The reviewer thought that Zhang Ziyi's extraordinary acting talents were wasted in Memoirs. I haven't seen it yet so I can't say. The Times reviewer recommended the movie that Zhang Ziyi starred in before Momoirs.
