New Music - 2010

| Would prefer to see this reserved for new releases or new reissues (especially if they are for things that have never been released on CD, or have been out of print for ages).
Right at this moment I am puzzling over Marina & the Diamonds. They may be awful--I don't normally like this kind of singing--but for the moment I sill finding something drawing me to them/her. |

| Interesting and catchy song;and, I can understand what she is singing about :)

| Nice image. Not sure where you found that (or if you captured it yourself from the video--but I somehow can't imagine you putting that much effort into it). My favorites now are "I Am Not A Robot" and "Mowgli's Road." I'm looking forward to this album, which will be out next month. |

| | |
| Actually I somehow thought I had linked to her myspace. Please check out these other songs (especialy "I Am Not A Robot") if you like "Hollywood" at all. (I think it has more problems, lyrically anyway, than her other songs.) |

Pantha du Prince
| | |
| I'm not usually into stuff like this, but I'm enjoying Pantha du Prince's Black Noise album, for all the tiny little sounds it incorporates. (I guess that's why they label this genre "micro-house.") And even though I don't listen to most of the electronic music I listened to back in the 80s, I do sometimes like things that take me back to that but with a twist. Try some new music, you might like it! |

| Thanks for telling us about Marina. I liked that song quite a bit, even though it was odd. I will try to check out Pantha du Prince. |

| FYI- "You can take a picture of what is on your screen by pressing PRINT SCREEN (PRTSC or PRTSCN on some keyboards)." Take a screen capture (print screen) "You can paste your screen capture into Paint, which is a drawing program you can use to crop, rotate, and resize pictures. To paste a screen capture into a Paint file 1.Open Paint by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Paint. 2.Click Edit, and then click Paste." Then you save the file to your computer and upload it to a free hosting site, like TinyPic Copy code that listed as "HTML for Websites." and Paste it here.

| I heard a radio interview with the Vampire Weekend group the other day and decided I like their music. College students from Columbia University formed this band, and I hear African and Latino influences, among other things. The link below will take you to a performance from their current release: |

| | |
| The new Tokyo Jihen album, Sports, has leaked. Probably better than Variety (their last), but still disappointing. The song I'm linking to has songs in English. (It's not one of my favorite songs on the album, but it's one of the only ones already up on youtube.) Kind of a boring-*ss video too. Well, I think some of you will at least enjoy the musicianship. (Unfortunately, they have the instrumental chops but often lack the spark of inspiration these days.) |

| Actually, on second listen, this album sure seems to suck. Time for me to mostly stop caring about new releases Shiina Ringo and her band. I've reached the point of diminishing returns before with other artists, and I think that's what has happened here. Better to just keep scanning for whatever music I happen to like, rather than getting too caught up in a particular artist. |
Janelle Monae
| | |
| I wouldn't call myself a fan of hers at this point, but I'm definitely curious to hear more. |

| Also I will probably get this before the year is out, unless I cut way back on CDs (which is possible since I am pretty broke and as usual I see dark, if not apocalyptic, clouds on our collective horizon, certainly our economic horizon). One my favorite contemporary figures in jazz. |

| I got the Marina & the Diamonds album in the mail earlier this week and I'm enjoying it immensely. It trails off a bit toward the end. But if you don't like the songs in the videos, I definitely wouldn't recommend it. I can understand how some people would find her intolerably mannered, but I seem to have become a friend. The songs are packed with detail, including a lot of well-timed twists and turns. The US release is in May. I don't know if there will be any singles released here before then. It will be interesting to see if she actually blows up here as much as I think she could. (Some people think she's too weird for commercial US radio.) Her Lilith Fair performances could be pivotal. |

Laura Marling
| | |
| I bet someone has mentioned her before here and I just paid no attention. And not sure about her yet. This doesn't really sound like my type of thing, but she seems pretty promising. It's folk, but it's not just droning on and on to the same strumming type folk. It has peaks and valleys and rhythm. (And she's British, so it's in English!) |

| You're funny, lerue! Next -- Shall I call it old or new? An album with an hour's worth of previously unreleased material has just come out from ... Jimi Hendrix!!! My local fave station has been playing cuts from it, and everything I've heard so far is outta sight! |

Lo que sucede conviene
| | |
| This is from last year, but I'm just hearing it now. The singer is Cuban, but overall, the band sounds a lot more like Puerto Rican or New York salsa, to me anyway. His singing is pretty mannered, but most of the time I like it. Occasionally his mannerisms bug me, but somehow the overall balance is positive. (And god that woman is gorgeous. Makes me wish I were a Cuban sonero.) |

Mriamar

| Nice new bolero project. Not breaking any new ground (although possibly recovering a forgotten singer/songwriter), but it's probably hard to break new ground and still do a bolero. |

El Gran Combo
| | |
| Still going strong. This new album sounds like it should be okay. I'm a little disappointed that this new single doesn't have a more distinctive sound (it sounds like one of their earlier songs, but I haven't identified which one yet). Still, it's pretty solid, and it's distinctively their sound anyway. |

Whoops
| | |
| I missed the English language part at the end. Sorry, dude, but aggressively spitting on the ground many times a minute is the sort of gratuitous anti-social lowlife thug behavior which I associate with hip-hop and which has largely put me off from the genre. |
Salsa!
| | |
| So like, don't even bother listening to that track, I'd say. In other news, heard a couple of tracks from the new El Gran Combo album tonight and they were both hot. Simply amazing that they are still this good after all these decades. Check this out. Significance of the switch-up in the music is that they are alternating between salsa and the distinctively Colombian style cumbia. This is a cover of an old song from Colombia (I assume), but they put their own stamp on it. |

RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| I like parts of the new Daddy Yankee album quite a bit, though I'm not sure what I think of it as a total package. Some of it dips into a certain sound which has been very hot in reggaeton over the past few years. I think it's supposed to sound "futuristic," with lots of autotune and borrowings from generic house club music and lots of synths I suppose. I'll take DY's version of this sound over what I've heard from others, but I'm still not really into it. Linked to below is "Daria" which is probably of the more palatable songs for people who aren't into reggaeton. |

blahblahblah

| If you need more motivation, she plays electric guitar, and she's good. Mostly jazz/fusion type stuff, not really my thing but I could imagine her arriving at something I'd like more. "Electro" from her myspace has some nice moments. |
RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| Pretty cool contemporary Afghan video, and yes, I do think the singer is pretty nice to look at as well. (I do have a thing for foreignish brunettes.) Don't know if Nago Moora is the name of the song (probably) or of her, or even if it's an entire band called Ghazal Nago Moora. (I do know ghazal is a type of song though.) |

Fado
| | |
| A rough translation of the title means caught between sleeping and dreaming. Lerue, I know you'd prefer brand new, but she is new to me, at least. Her most recent album, "Leva-me aos Fados," was released within the last year. |
RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| Thanks, petaloid. Fado has always seemed to me like something I should like, but I've never really gotten into it. This singer does have an exceptional voice. Do you like Mariza? (And a new album from this year is fine! I don't just post about brand brand new people. Maybe you are kidding.) |
Sunny Jain
| | |
| I see you one fadista and raise you an Indo-jazz guitarist's new album, Taboo (apparently dealing mostly with subjects taboo in India and related parts of Asia). I was waiting for this, since I liked his earlier Avaaz a lot. Just taking a first listen now. You can stream the album from his site. It's really not very different from a lot of jazz I'm not into, but the blend of jazz and Indian musical elements seems to be enough to pull me in. Closer in a lot of ways to fusion or even prog. rock (but very jazzy prog. rock) than perhaps some purist jazz fans would allow. |

| Somehow scrolled too quickly originally and missed the song you had linked to. I do like that. Will probably check out more. |
RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| I'm finding some "dance music" trends more palatable/tolerable than usual at the moment. For instance, I don't especially like the post-dub-step (or whatever it is) that I've heard or the UK funky, but I can definitely live with it. UK funky in particular bears a strong resemblance to lots of African or African-derived forms of music. At times it feels close to reggaeton (especially when reggaeton sifts more toward a soca feel). UK funky (house): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csh_-ioIcQs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxIa-f7Q1gI (I mostly like the beats, but really not into the vocals on 99% of this stuff above.) Some similar reggaeton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YX11pvfn1nw Some of this new wave of dubstep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g39FoP9xCJk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYHbIXsLPcU (I dunno, that last one has some stuff in it that sounds weirdly like some 80s TV show theme music.) These "insights" are all second-hand, taken from people who actually like and follow this stuff (aside from reggaeton which I do like and follow to an extent). I just thought I'd point out its existence here. Also, I just think there is a lot of interesting stuff bubbling under and bubbling up at the moment. The whole international mixing and recombining of musical styles has hardly gotten started, imo. There are all sorts of untapped possibilities out there. |
India - Estupida
| | |
| I'm still deciding what I think of this new song by salsa singer India. Pretty average video. I think as mainstream salsa nowadays goes, this is probably pretty good. I could see it being very effective on the dance floor, too. |

Old music new
| | |
| Old music, new compilation, and probably unfamiliar for a lot of us. Even I have heard very little of this music, despite being interested in Latin music. Check out this very trippy cumbia track. I'm hearing good things about the whole compilation. |

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
| | |
| Flying Lotus's Cosmogramma is definitely pretty indie (though not rock). Slowly growing on me, though for now I still mostly just think it's okay. It picks up steam toward the middle. Kind of "abstract" electronic DJ type stuff, to be lazy about describing it. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Flying Lotus
Boris - Variations
| | |
| There's a new album by Japanese stoner/metal/space/psychedelic/noise band Boris and on incomplete first listen it's good, with some really stand-outs. I think the whole thing consists of remakes of some of their previously released material. Psychedelic guitarist Michio Kurihara joins them as he tends to do on recent albums. |

| For someone who isn't into rock all that much at this point, I manage to find a few things I like that rock the f*** out. |
RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| The new India album is streaming on her myspace. There are some English language songs on it. I'm not normally a big fan of salsa in English, but these versions of "Smile" and "Crying" both work for me. Not sure I'm sold on "Turn Off the Lights" in general, but I need to hear it more. Her voice is more rough-edged than it used to be, but I also think she's using it much better on this than she has in the past. |

Rox debut is out
| | |
| The Rox debut is out now and it looks like the whole thing is up on her myspace. I might get this, but I'm not sure she's quite there yet with her songwriting. But hopefully it's just a matter of time. Her singing is excellent. |

RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| Avant jazz. I like some of Matthew Shipp's work, and Allen currents leads the Sun Ra Arkestra (although plenty of his soloing is too far out for me). Joe Morris I don't really know, but I hardly follow jazz at all. Sun Ra is one big exception; Matthew Shipp is a smaller scale exception. |

By popular demand. . .

| There's not much current Arabic popular music that appeals to me at all, but some khaleeji music (music from the Gulf states) is still pretty nice. |

RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| I now have both of those last two I posted about and they're both good. Of course, the Khaled Abdul Rahman is more accessible. It's popular music with a strong rhythmic base. |
A short track from the album
| | |
Bilal - Airtight's Revenge
| | |
| I have a feeling that this music is going to have too many words for me and the words will get tiresome after a while, because I'm like that. But I'm probably going to give it a chance, since I like the overall sound. This is a track from his new album, Airtight's Revenge. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Bilal - Free
Fuego
| | |
| This is poppier and probably less likely to go over with the music room set than Bilal (who has more of a retro sound, even though that's only part of his whole deal). Also, this is in Spanish, obviously. Fuego is a Dominican out of DC, and his vocal sound is kind of similar to another singer from the DR. Anyway, this is a mix of street merengue, reggaeton, hip-hop, etc. I tend to prefer the merengue-based songs and some of the reggaeton. |

| | |
| This new Neil Young album with Daniel Lanois is probably the best thing he's done in ages (though I admit I've missed at least a few albums he's put out in recent years, maybe even some old ones). It's pretty raw, from the Neil Young core, or so it seems. |

RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| I was not familiar with Danay Suarez. I like the song you linked to reasonably well. I'm not all that interested in reggae in Spanish (reggae in the roots sense--not reggaeton, which is sometimes just referred to as "reggae" by Caribbean Spanish speakers) because I guess there's just so much in English and I'm not that big on the genre at this point that I need to go looking for it in other languages. But she's got a good voice. |
Bryan Ferry
| | |
| Songs from the new Bryan Ferry album sound pretty good for this type of stuff, but I'm not too much in the mood for this type of stuff. His ultra-grown-up-jaded sexuality is a little too depressing for me. |

RE: New Music - 2010
| | |
| I'm not too interested in hearing new versions of these familiar songs, and I'd like to hear her in a harder-edged setting, but still, Xiomara Laugart has a great voice. I guess this is the type of thing she wants to be doing, if she continues putting out recordings of this sort. I could see myself possibly getting this on the strength of her voice. Actually, this one seems to have a stronger percussion foundation than the album of hers I have (from the same label), so that could make a difference as well--and the familiar songs are good, but awfully familiar. |
