Big Party in Motown

As some of you know the Super Bowl is taking place in Detroit. I gotta be honest with you, I knew this was a big event, but I never realized how big it was. I swear every celebrity in the world is here. I am not attending any parties or events but the local news is keeping me well informed. Kid Rock has been the unofficial host. He has turned up everywhere and at every party. He did a concert and managed to get the reclusive Bob Seger up on stage to sing with him. The Stones are here. Aretha and Stevie Wonder are here. Tommy Lee is here. Snoop Dog. Paris and Nicky Hilton. A bunch of rappers and people on tv shows that I didn't know about. Playboy threw a party but Hugh didn't make it. Every football personality past and present is here. Jimmy Kimmel has broadcast his show from here this week. Eminem hasn't been seen much but is rumored to be around. The White Stripes haven't been seen but tourists have been warned not to stay at the Hotel Yorba. The best thing? Everyone is having a good time and have been impressed with the party Detroit has put on. They seem to mean it too. Perhaps this will begin to change peoples opinions of a city that has been the butt of jokes for way too long.

NEW YORK (Nov. 29, 2005) -- The Super Bowl just got even bigger. Taking a quick break from their "A Bigger Bang" World Tour, the legendary Rolling Stones will perform in the Sprint Super Bowl XL Halftime Show on ABC at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Feb. 5, the NFL announced today.

Ok, I just saw Mick Jagger during halftime, he was, of course, in fine form, singing 'Satisfaction'. I have no quarrels with Da Man, but...
I'm just peeved that Motown's greatest didn't get the halftime stage instead. Detroit deserved it and we could have seen(heard) one helluva show!

They did do some Motown in the pre-game show, Stevie Wonder & others, which was good to hear.

But I loved seeing the Stones playing to the crowd and Mick doing his thing. It was funny but true when he said they could have sung "Satisfaction" at the first Superbowl halftime show (40 years ago) if they had been invited. Those guys just don't quit.

(I actually enjoyed watching the football game too, even though it's not my favorite sport.)

The decision to go with the Stones rather than Motown artists has been a hot topic here. Even Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson showed up to protest that among other things. The Stones were asked about the controversy to which Keith Richard said something to the effect that Motown Records left Detroit 30 years ago so whats the problem? He was right of course, though many of the artists never left. Truth is most of these artists including Stevie Wonder, have not had any hits in years. That and the fact that it dosen't get much bigger than the Stones was probably the deciding factor. I would have loved to have seen the Funk Brothers backing up various Motown artists. I think that would have topped the Stones.

I respect Jesse Jackson (honest I do) but his efforts can
be put to better use elsewhere. Keith Richard said it best.
Berry Gordy basically gave up on Motown Records to become a
hotshot movie producer, which, for the most part, didn't happen. How can you have a great Motown show without Marvin
Gaye, Levi Stubbs, Eddie Kendricks, Tammi Terrell and
David & Jimmy Ruffin? Michael Jackson has weirded himself
into oblivion. I was never a big fan of Motown (I dug the
music on Stax and Atlantic) so I really don't know how
many vital Motown artists are left. Stevie, Smokey, Mary
Wilson and especially Ashford & Simpson. I was going to
say you need someone as dynamic as Mick Jagger, but heck,
those five artists are dynamic enough for anyone.

By the way, you Motown fans really should read the book
"Motown: Music, Money, Sex & Power" by Gerald Posner. It'll
make your head spin.

Read in the local paper today that after Stevie Wonder and company left the stage, the PA announcer informed everyone that today all the visitors in town were made honorary Motown citizens, then the Four Tops came out and sang "I can't help myself" or one of those Motown classics. Too bad that a commerical blocked this from being seen by the International audience.

There was a half time show-?
Aru, from Pittsburgh.

I guess after Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," they weren't taking any chances.
