Favorite Music Blogs

Are we allowed to provide links to music blogs here? I don't remember if that's against the rules or not. Anyway, I love reading music blogs. Sometimes when I'm searching around hypemachine, I find links to some really good music writing. Coverlaydown is focused on cover songs (he's a great writer, by the way PLUS free mp3s). largeheartedboy posts mp3s, but he doesn't actually write about the stuff--I'd rather read some kind of enthusiastic description before I download unfamiliar stuff. I also like the writing of the guy over at the Real Big Rock Candy Mountain. He's a bit rough around the edges, but really amusing stuff.

Anyway, if anyone has a good music blog to recommend, I'd like to hear about it.

RE: Favorite Music Blogs

Funny thing, I don't think I visit any music blogs regularly. I depend more on music discussion forums (especially (I Love Music,( though the specialized Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen forum, (Electric Mole,( has also provided me with some good leads lately). I find myself at blogs periodically, but I don't think there are any I read regularly. I also tend to depend on just checking the latest releases available from specialized distributors, when it comes to the more foreign things I follow (esp. Latin music and Arab music). I go to the (Questionable Content( forums a lot, but mostly just to see what kind of music files are available. I can't stand reading sites that are clogged up with annoying animated avatars and excessive repeated images in signature lines and so forth. Really bugs me. I tried registering with Questionable Content so I could view w/out all that garbage, but somehow the registration didn't take. It's probably too indie-centric for me anyway.

The real one

Wait, forget that thread. This is the one I wanted. Not sure why there are two.

Actually, come to think of it, I like checking in with these blogs now and then, but they aren't really blogs I check for listening suggestions. They just are very well written and sometimes contain interesting observations about music, culture, etc. They are basically classical-oriented, however, which I am not going to pretend is my thing. These are all published critics:

Alex Ross - The Rest is Noise
Kyle Gann's Post Classic
Greg Sandow on the future of classical music

Yeah--the good writing and the "interesting observations about music, culture, etc." is the main draw. The free tunes are just the icing on the cake.

This guy leans towards folk. He did a really good piece on Tom Waits a while back.
