Okay, so we're at your funeral...

Did you ever think of what you'd like played at your funeral? I remember my dear mum so worried about what music should be played at Dad's funeral (I guess it was her way of trying to stay busy) that she poured over sheet music a whole day trying to find something 'fitting'. As it turned out, she picked out mostly HER favorites (imho), but whatever, it sounded great. Ave Maria, Louis Armstrong's What a wonderful world, etcetera...

Do you remember a particular funeral (or wedding ceremony for that matter) that had particularly inspiring music?
And what would u like people to hear at yours?

I would love to hear...oops, I mean I would love for the congregation to hear Debussy's Clair de Lune, one of my favorites, because it reminds me so much of what I perceive heaven to be, how angels come down to take us in their arms and bring us to heaven (or that wonderful place, whatever the name may be)

Another song I would like played is: Lennon's Imagine, which for me was an epiphanous moment.

Hmmmmm ......... good question. I'd probably like to hear Oingo Boingo's Dead Man's Party but, chances are, the church or funeral home wouldn't allow it! (Oingo Boingo's one of my favorite groups)

Know what? I'd want people at my funeral to have FUN. After all, I'd want them to celebrate my life and not my passing. So, I'd probably choose a lot of 80s music. That's because that's a lot of what I listen to and pretty much everyone who knows me associates me with 80s music.

Just to throw in something else, I'd probably want to play (or have them play) Dave Brubeck's Take Five and Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island. (And then maybe to be followed by Billy Idol's White Wedding?)

Criminy, a lot of these songs I had played at my wedding/reception/whatever..Brubeck's Take 5, What a Wonderful World, etc. I guess I would want church hymns sung by a damn good choir, since that kind of music, in that context, means a lot to me. No rock music, just very traditional hymns.

I love in the movie "The Big Chill" when they go to their friends funeral and he had the song "Short People have no reason to live" as his funeral song. LOL, I thought that was hilarious.

If anybody shows up they can have all my stuff, but I wouldn't mind if they take a few minutes and listen to some Tom Waits before the haggling commences. Maybe Shiver Me Timbers and Innocent When You Dream, and the last two from Mule Variations, Take It With Me and Come On Up To The House. Those are all good final goodbye songs.

During the haggling they can play something a little more upbeat, like Eyeball Kid or Filipino Box Spring Hog or Metropolitan Glide.

But they'll probably play whatever the hell they want and there won't be a damn thing I can do about it. The only thing I need to be sure of is that I get burned up and thrown into the Atlantic Ocean, preferably from the very end of the Barnegat Light jetty in LBI.

At the gravesite, someone singing Iris DeMent's "After You're Gone." Follow that with Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. Then everyone can take turns shovelin' in some of the dirt. All hop into their cars and head for the after-party.

This should be something like dynomutt described. Lots of good food and music spanning my lifetime.

Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra, from my childhood.

Some of the more upbeat numbers from the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Joni Mitchell and more from my teens, sliding through disco into new wave from my young adulthood. Other stuff added, depending what age I made it to.

Photos displayed around party area or Powerpoint slide show of photos from babyhood through old-ladyhood.

Mixed CDs of the featured music as party favors for my loved ones to take home with them.

I had a friend named Michelle who knew she wouldn't be around much longer. She planned her own funeral services and a party afterward at her apartment, hosted by another friend. The music she loved (Paul Robeson, The Weavers) really good snacks, and photos & memorabilia from her life displayed all around. There was so much of her spirit there we almost expected Michelle to walk into the room.

That party was the best gift she could have given us, and I will always remember her thoughtfulness.

You know I agree about the up-beat music. I consider myself to be a 'fun' person, so I would definitely looooooove some funky music that folks could remember me by. Can u just imagine Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke's horn section a-blastin' whilst everyone leaves the church?

Well, y'all, they'd be a-dancin' in the aisles! lol

And I've always loved seeing people get up and dance in reaction to a good gospel song.

Well, on my tombstone will be the following Jimmy Buffett Quote "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life, all the way."

This is easy...my husband and I have had many conversations about this very subject (we're in our early 50s).

My husband wants part of the Pocahontas soundtrack CD played. He's listed some of songs plus several instrumental tracks from the CD. And Pink Cadillac by Natalie Cole. There was another, very upbeat country song he mentioned but it would be so inappropriate for a funeral of any kind that I complained I'd have a lot of explaining to do if I played it. LOL

I want a couple tracks from Andreas Vollenweider's Down to the Moon CD. Hal Ketchum's Too Many Memories, Satisfied Mind, Softer Than a Whisper and Stay Awhile and George Winston's Variations On The Kanon By Pachelbel and the Walking in the Air piano solos.

I'll probably burn a CD of these songs in the future...just in case. :-)

I'm feelin' mighty old I've got an awful cold
I'll soon be walkin' the streets of gold
I'm tellin' boys don't you monkey with my widder when I'm gone

Cause if you monkey with my widder I'll come crawlin' back
And I'll come back and I'll get you
I'm tellin' boys don't you monkey with my widder when I'm gone

Oh that woman of mine she's mighty fine
We got nine kids and they're all mine
So I'm tellin' boys don't you monkey with my widder when I'm gone

Cause if you monkey with my widder...
[ fiddle ]
There's a whole lot of women and a whole lot of men
A lot pretty women for every man
I'm tellin' boys don't you monkey with my widder when I'm gone

Cause if you monkey with my widder...

Don't you monkey with my widder when I'm gone

I dunno. How about "See Ya Later, Alligator?"

 o
RE: Okay, so we're at your funeral...

I could see all the all the tunes that depicted your life... but ending it with Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World and then the bagpipes would definitely make everyone cry on the outside and smile with hope on the inside.

RE: Okay, so we're at your funeral...

This is a common discussion between me and my best friend. Her's is "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen. Mine is "Back That Ass Up" by Juvenile (Dirty Version)

I would have Honey by Bobby Goldsboro and my favorite "One Toke Over the Line" by Brewer & Shipley.

Of course, since I am going to be cremated it will probably be Dust in th Wind.
