Favourite Yardbirds' guitarist...

Clapton, Beck or Page?

The Yardbirds arguably employed three of the top rock guitarists' of the '60s during their all too short existence. Which is your favourite, both with the Yardbirds and during their subsequent post-Yardbird careers?

Eric (Slowhand, God) probably went on to make the most money, especially during his solo efforts. I really dug him in Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes. But his later MOR recordings left me a bit unimpressed.

Jimmy may be the most revered based on his Led Zeppelin work, especially amongst hard rock aficionados, but what has he done since?

Jeff is my personal favourite. I enjoyed "Roger the Engineer" more than any of the Yardbirds' other efforts. I also really liked his two solo works, "Wired" and "Blow by Blow".

There really is no right answer; just trying to get other's views on the subject...

While with the Yardbirds, I'll take Eric Clapton. Post Yardbirds, I'll take Jeff Beck.

I like Jeff's more jazzy stuff like Blow by Blow much more than Eric's solo stuff.

Obviously Led Zep were great. But as a guitarist, I don't like Jimmy Page's playing as much as the other two.

There's no picking a best among them, each is top notch
in the form they decided to play in. If only Eric hadn't
recorded so much pap, and if only Jeff would put out a
solid blues recording.

I love desraili gears and claptons other cream efforts. His work with john mayall and blind faith too.I certainly love alot of page stuff with led zeppelin too,but i believe beck did those great riffs on the yardbird classics heart full of soul and for your love.I like becks contributions best if we are just talking yardbird songs.

RE: Favourite Yardbirds' guitarist...

I had the pleasure of seeing Clapton live 4 times in the late 70's/early 80's. My favorite was a tour that he did with Santana. After both of their sets were complete the two guitarists took the stage together for a pair of encores. I wish I could remember what tunes they played...

I saw Beck only once. It was around the time of "Wired" so Jan Hammer was with him. I'm thinking that second billing went to Fleetwood Mac, but this was right around their heyday of "Rhiannon", "Go Your Own Way", etc., so maybe I've got that backwards... It was an outdoor concert that was billed as "rain or shine", but the organizers neglected to cover the stage and a thunderstorm was threatening.

At first, Jeff refused to play due to the possibility of electrocution (it was pouring by the time his set came up).
The rowdy crowd began pushing at the stage in anger and frustration, chanting "rain or shine! rain or shine!", and apparently the organizers were afraid that the stage would collapse under the weight of the mob. They finally prevailed upon Jeff to play and he came out visibly pissed-off (who can blame him since his former bandmate Keith Relf had died of guitar electrocution just a year or two earlier!).

I believe that Jeff's anger contributed to the intensity of the mere 20 minute set that he played. He was spectacular as he played thru clenched teeth and hit every familiar riff of his Yardbird years...

Fleetwood Mac was also great; I can still see Stevie Nicks standing on stage with the wind whipping thru her lace gown...

I never got to see Page or Led Zeppelin; I'm much too young for that ;>
