The Official Chicago Appreciation Thread

I've been in a Chicago mood the last week or so, just wondered if anyone else had any good memories of this classic band from the 70's.

Did you have a favorite album or any favorite songs? They had such a unique sound combining three piece rock with a three piece horn section.

Sure they had their fair share of pop radio hits (Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is, Saturday In The Park, Just You 'N' Me) but they also had some great tunes which never made it to the airwaves (South California Purples, Happy Cause I'm Going Home, Aire, Hideaway).

Overall, my favorite Chicago album is Chicago IV (for the included posters and songbooks as much as for the music itself). Sadly, they were never the same (to me) after Terry Kath left. : (

Let's be serious. The tune 'Qustion 67 & 68' must be considered their best "top 25" hit. Anything else is just pablum - period. Don't bother debating with me - I already said their best "top 25 tune" is 'Question 67 & 68'. That is of course subjective.

I like them alot.Make me smile and color my world are also great songs.Beginnings,is a great one too.Although i like the songs cetara sang lead on i seem to be more inclined to listen to the songs lamb and kath sang lead vocals on.I dont really have one favorite lp of theirs. I enjoyed seeing them live in buffalo in the mid 80s.

I've seen 'em in concert a couple of times (back in the 70's). Great shows, great musicians.

I really like their first three or four albums. After that, they become increasingly "poppy" and less interesting.

I saw Chicago a couple of years ago when they were touring with the Beach Boys.
I went to see the Beach Boys and ended up liking Chicago's live show more.
Most of their stuff released in the last 20 years has been middle-of-the-road pop but live they were harder sounding.

Favorite memory? That's easy. Interviewing Robert Lamm on my show.

I actually got the scoop on why they changed the name from Chicago transit Authority to just "Chicago".

Did it have anything to do with a lawsuit?

Also...

In your interview with him, did Lamm say why founding member Danny Seraphine was booted out?

Just A Guy, in a nutshell, yes. At least that's what I heard. Like anyone was going to get them confused with the REAL Chicago Transit Authority.

I like their old stuff better. That 80's Peter Cetera falsetto was a little too much for me. The brass sections were kick butt and I always wanted to play my pathetic little trumpet along with them. Somehow I never quite sounded the same....LOL

I didn't know the names of the people involved, I just knew I liked the early songs better than the later "whiney" ones. What happened to the singers on the early stuff?

My favorite song is "Colour My World". My sweetie and I had it sung at our wedding 33 years ago.

Actually, at first I thought Chicago was ripping off Blood Sweat and Tears. The brass rock band idea and all, but I now like both bands for different reasons. BS&T are (were?) all Julliard products and Chicago members are all more basic rockers IMHO.

Thanks for bringing this up.

PS - I miss the posters and iron-ons. I still have an iron-on of a cardinal that has never been applied. J..
