Music Trivia: Did you know that...

I'm always fascinated by the knowledge a lot of you have in terms of music trivia, so I got to thinking (as I sometimes do lol) that everyone knows something quirky or unusual about a song or an artist out there that just might be of interest to the rest of us. So let's have a go.

To introduce your bit of musical trivia, begin with "Did you know...?" and keep it succinct, ya dig?

Alrighty...
Did you know how Louis Armstrong inherited the name Satchmo?
The nickname Satchmo or Satch is short for Satchelmouth. Early on he was also known as Dippermouth. These are all references to his large mouth. Friends and fellow musicians usually called him Pops, which is also how Armstrong usually addressed his friends and fellow musicians.

Did you know that Marc Bolan ( from T Rex fame) was afraid to ride in cars? He owned many, many cars, but never learned how to drive. He also wrote many songs about cars...and he died in a car crash when his wife lost control of their car.

Did you know that Mick Jagger's father was a physical education teacher?
He always encouraged his son to keep working out and stay fit -- that shows in Mick's stage performances, wouldn't you say?

Did you know that when Simon and Garfunkel were approached to do a song for the movie The Graduate, they were going through what we would call a "dry spell", and thus were asked to take a song from their established repertoire and just change the lyrics to fit the 50s era... which they did. Their song "Mrs Roosevelt" became... "Mrs Robinson", but you can still hear a reference to the First Lady and her time with the words "Where have you gone, Joe Dimaggio"...

Did you know that Paul Simon has a brother, Eddie, who played and sang a bit with him back in the day? Eddie became a radio station owner and guitar teacher.

If you watch the video below you'll see that they almost looked like twins, even though they are four years apart:

I never heard they went by that name. It's cute!

Did you know that the rough guitar sound on the Kinks hit "You Really Got Me" came from Dave Davies purposefully damaging their equipment? Here is his explanation:

(from "Kink" - An Autobiography by Dave Davies, copyright 1996)

The "Green Amp"

"I bought this in a radio spares shop in Muswell Hill in 1962. I couldn't afford a Watkins Dominator or a bigger posher amp! I went home and plugged the Elpico loudspeaker's output leads into the input of the AC 30, in effect using the smaller amp as kind of a pre-amp. It sounded great, but I wasn't satisfied.

The crowning glory of my simple yet effective experiment was to slash the speaker cone of the Elpico with a razor blade so that the material, although now shredded, still remained intact with the outer side of the cone. As it vibrated it produced a distorted and jagged roar. In fact, the original set-up was so crude that the main amp's hum was almost as loud as the sound I had created.

A sound was born, but I didn't know it at the time. Immediately I started using my set-up in live shows that I performed with Ray and our band, in the time leading up to the creation of the Kinks. Ironically, it was that sound, which we used on "You Really Got Me," that got the Kinks our first hit."

Wow, too cool!

Did you know that Paul McCartney's younger brother, Michael formed a group of his own, known as "The Scaffold" and goes by the name "Mike McGear"?

He is mentioned in the lyric of "Let 'Em In" as "Brother Michael" (available on McCartney's "Wings At The Speed Of Sound" album).

 o
RE: Music Trivia: Did you know that...

You know, I vaguely remembered that Sir Paul had a brother, but how interesting to learn about his musical group.

You inspired me to do a bit of research, and it looks like he had taken a photo I love that was used for the album cover of the "Chaos and Creation In The Back Yard."

I can't imagine being the sibling of Paul Simon or Paul McCartney and trying to succeed in the field of music. Talk about standing in someone's shadow!

Thank U Very Much by 'The Scaffold' (along with 'Lily the Pink') was very popular in the '60's. If you go to Google and type in "Aintree Iron" there are dozens of suggestions as to what it might mean, including one from Mike McCartney who wrote it. ;-)

Velly velly intalesting!

Did you know how the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd got its name?

While in high school in Jacksonville, FL, Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Allen Collins (guitar), and Gary Rossington (guitar) formed 'My Backyard'. Within a few months, the group added bassist Leon Wilkeson and keyboardist Billy Powell, and changed their name to Lynyrd Skynyrd, a mocking tribute to their gym teacher Leonard Skinner, who was notorious for punishing students... with long hair.

Did you know that...At age 47, the Rolling Stones' bassist, Bill Wyman, began a relationship with 13-year old Mandy Smith, with her mother's blessing. Six years later, they were married, but the marriage only lasted a year. Not long after, Bill's 30-year-old son Stephen married Mandy's mother, age 46. That made Stephen a stepfather to his former stepmother. If Bill and Mandy had remained married, Stephen would have been his father's father-in-law and his own grandpa.

Hmmm, now that's what I call a close family!

Graham Nash was guest DJ on our local fave radio station today, and he was playing songs that had marked milestones in his life.

When he played Joni Mitchell's "Blue," he gave highest praise to her talent, saying the song held special significance to him because she wrote it right after the two of them broke up. I never knew that.

 o
RE: Music Trivia: Did you know that...

Speaking of Joni... I recently heard that while she was with Graham Nash she was secretly seeing... Crosby, and that Nash, at the same, was okay with the arrangement

(ah, those peace-and-love hippies!) lol

Did you know that Ginger Baker, famed drummer of the super group Cream and later, Blind Faith is a cat lover? In fact, while Cream was at the height of their touring in the 60's, Baker always brought his 2 cats along and the tour manager was always charged with keeping them comfortable.

I loved T Rex!!!

I was looking up the song "Shakin' All Over", trying to find who originally wrote/sang it and came across this little tidbit.

"Shakin' All Over" gained fame in North America after Chad Allan and the Expressions covered it in 1965, where it was a #1 hit in Canada. Several months later, concerned that the effect of the British Invasion might eclipse the potential for success in the US by a Canadian act, the record label issued the song to radio stations in the States on a white label, with the artist listed as Guess Who? This became the first hit for the group in the states, reaching #22 and leading Chad Allen and the Expressions to change the group's name to The Guess Who.

Freddie Mercury and Dave Clark (The Dave Clark Five) were very good friends.
Freddie sang "Time" written by Dave for his Broadway musical.
Some have said, Dave was with Freddie when he passed.
Great song and interpetation.

Young Brian Epstein, a record store owner in London, was asked by a customer for a copy of the record, "My Bonnie", by a group known as The Silver Beatles. And the rest, as the saying goes, is HISTORY.
