| If you were to make a CD of the, like, coolest 80's songs like EV-ER, what songs would you pick?
I'm on a mission to do just that and need to be reminded of some, I'm sure. So far I've got The Eurythmics, Dead or Alive, THompson Twins, Soft Cell, A-Ha..you know, the usuals.
My first disc includes these tunes that take me back to happier times....(ahh, it was great being ten years old. LOL)
Age of Consent, New Order
Whip It (Live), Devo
Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, Boy George and Culture Club
Dance Hall Days, Wang Chung
I'll Tumble 4 Ya, Boy George and Culture Club
Lies, The Thompson Twins
Too Shy, Kajagoogoo
Miss Me Blind, Boy George and Culture Club
Cars, Gary Numan
Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop), Q-Feel
King For Just One Day, The Thompson Twins
Der Kommissar, After the Fire
She Blinded Me With Science, Thomas Dolby
Space Age Love Song, A Flock Of Seagulls
Karma Chameleon, Boy George and Culture Club
Church of the Poison Mind, Boy George and Culture Club
Rock Lobster, The B-52's
Bizarre Love Triangle, New Order
(DH cringes everytime Boy George comes on but I tell him to deal with it, as this is MY 80's fantasy)

RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!

| Hey dynomutt, KROQ really was the station for New Wave and Alternative music back in the 80's. There are only two cities musicians care about... New York and Los Angeles, the two biggest media markets in the country. Many times on KROQ bands would appear on the show (or call in) to announce album or concert news. Of course that was before the Internet. Then of course there's Rodney Bingenheimer's Sunday night show, "Rodney on the 'ROQ" for playing obscure and underground punk tunes. Oh, and the now nationally syndicated radio show Love Line started on KROQ back in the mid-80's with The Poorman and Dr. Drew.

RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Johnny looks grouchy in that picture -- I like it! Just A gives a good description of KROQ. I miss those days. Los Angeles may be a media target but they have missed my demographic. |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Some pretty good songs i had forgotten about. |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Yeah, I lived in LA back in the late 80s (87-88) and that's when I got exposed to KROQ. I've been talking to relatives who are still there and, apparently, KROQ's just not what it used to be. Oh, and I remember staying up late at night listening to Loveline! Man, that show was AWESOME! Apparently Poorman got booted (or quit) from KROQ back in '93. If there ever was a show that needed to USE a delay/kill switch, Loveline was it! Oh, and did any of you guys catch Adventures with the Poorman on one of the LA channels? KROQ got me started on alternative and new wave...... actually, I still listen to a lot of those songs nowadays. Man, I must be getting old or something! ;-) (Now if only I can find that old KROQ car sticker I have somewhere .....) |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Right on, dynomutt! I figured you at least knew about KROQ (pronounced K-Rock, for those that don't know) but wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic with the "World Famous" remark, even though they themselves say it all the time. Your relatives are right about KROQ. Not a lot of good music out there right now, plus some DJs have moved on. Re: Poorman - Legend has it he was fired from KROQ because he allegedly invited the entire listening audience over to Kevin or Bean's house for a party and announced the address over the air. "Adventures Of Poorman" was his post-radio gig and I believe it was on KDOC(?), an independant station out of Orange County. I seem to recall he did a lot of taped segments from Newport/Huntington Beach, hassling the beach-babes as usual. No idea what he's up to these days. Sorry to hear about your World Famous KROQ sticker. I lost a KMET sticker once and haven't gotten over it. Maybe you can email the station and have them mail you one. Until then, here ya go...
|
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Dude! Thanks for the pic -- my sticker was EXACTLY like that.... God I feel old now. ;-) (I may just print the thing out and stick it on my car ......) I vaguely remember watching Adventures with the Poorman in '88 -- so he may have been on TV prior to being booted off KROQ. Oh, and if you want to listen to KROQ's best music from the 80s, Live365 has about 3-4 online stations that play nothing except KROQ stuff. KROQ itself is broadcast on Live365 but the stuff coming out of it now is crappy. Another station plays KROQ stuff from '83, another has stuff from '82-'83, and a third one plays their top 100 songs from '80-'90. The link for the last station's below. Great to find another KROQ aficionado! (The station's currently playing The Beastie Boys -- Fight For Your Right! Kewl!) |

| Hey Petaloid, I think Johnny "Rotten" was just hamming it up for the camera. He was really a cool (but kooky) guy. dynomutt, I think you are right about the Poorman show in the 80's. I guess his post-kroq show had a different title. Thanks for link for kroq's streaming audio, too. Now I can go back in time and relive the 80's via KROQ and KNAC online. Woo Hoo!
And do you remember this station, too?
|
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Thanks! Uhmmmm......... I remember Pirate Radio but KNAC doesn't sound familiar. I'm assuming it's a new station? |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| dynomutt, KNAC had been around for years but changed its format from rock to spanish in 95. But I have to thank Phyllis for starting this thread and you for linking to KROQ. Because without that I wouldn't have thought to dig out my old radio station bumperstickers, only to discover that my old vintage KMET sticker was MIA. Thankfully I bought a replacement sticker on Ebay this morning so all is right with the world again. And where *is* Phyllis? She starts a great thread and doesn't post a follow-up? C'mon... Anyway, here are the other two radio station bumperstickers I have, as well as the logo from a t-shirt I bought while vacationing in Hawaaii back in the early 80's...

| Here I am, here I am. Just flitting around from one place to another, actually. Isn't it great to remember the "good old days?" LOL I'm on volume 3 of my 80's trilogy - and I think I'm about done. Some of the songs mentioned I have never heard of but am sure I would remember if I listened to them. Acutally, my local public library has a very good assortment of disks and well.. you can draw your own conclusions. Brings new meaning to the words "Pirate Radio," I'm sure. ; ) (Gasp! Did I say that?) Anyway, disk two is the "Totally 80's" disk I burned and contains these great hits, all for just three easy payments of .... (anyone remember K-Tel??) These are in alphabetical order thanks to iTunes, but not how I burned them on the disk. (Not that that matters) A Sort of Homecoming U2 Brand New Lover Dead or Alive Do You Really Want to Hurt Me Boy George and Culture Club Everybody Have Fun Tonight Wang Chung Everybody Wants to Rule the World Tears for Fears Good Thing Fine Young Cannibals I Ran (So Far Away) A Flock Of Seagulls If You Leave Orchestral Manouevers in the Dark Miss Me Blind Boy George and Culture Club One Thing Leads to Another The Fixx Relax Frankie Goes to Hollywood rio Duran Duran Tainted Love Soft Cell Take On Me A-Ha True Faith New Order West End Girls Pet Shop Boys What You Need INXS Some of them appeared on my last list but I shuffled things around to take care of the rather Boy George-heavy playlist. Once I did that, DH was happy. LOL Disk 3, so far: Karma Chameleon Boy George and Culture Club Don't You (Forget About Me) Simple Minds Be Near Me ABC What have I done to deserve this? Pet Shop Boys You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) Dead or Alive New Sensation INXS Steppin' Out Joe Jackson Obsession Animotion Would I Lie to You? The Eurythmics Our House Madness Alive and Kicking Simple Minds Sledgehammer Peter Gabriel Dancing with Myself Billy Idol I Melt With You Modern English I must say, the Dead or Alive CD cover photo (and insert) were some of the most visually disturbing images I've seen in a while. LOL And Just A Guy, I'm glad you found your stickers! Isn't that awesome? |

RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!

| Phyllis -- I actually remember K-Tel. I think I own a collection of about 8 CDs full of 80s hits from K-Tel! I vaguely remember ordering the set one very early morning after coming home from a night of carousing at the local bars. Suffice it to say that I was in an inebriated state as that was the only circumstance in which I would actually order such things! ;-) Oh, and I also have Dead Or Alive's greatest hits CD. Quite a trip down memory lane ...... |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Shock the Monkey! PETER GABRIEL No one mentioned THE ( ENGLISH ) BEAT, Sooner or Later!! |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| I listened to a little more hard core stuff in the 80's, but I'll try not to list any "punk" bands, (although some here already have IMHO!) So far nobody has listed any of the following bands: Joy Division - Colony Depeche Mode - It's Called a Heart Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun Dali's Car - His Box Talking Heads - Burning Down the House Bow Wow Wow - W.O.R.K. The Fall - Mark'll Sink Us Caberet Voltaire - Doom Zoom R.E.M. - Odd Fellows Local 151 Virgin Prunes - Caucasion Walk The Stranglers - Peaches The Police - Invisible Sun The Cure - A Forest Bauhaus - God in an Alcove Psychedelic Furs - We Love You Tones on Tails - Christian Says The The - Sweet Bird of Truth Sonic Youth - Star Power I also have to hand it to "Just a Guy" for noting two of my favorite bands of all time; Gang of Four and Echo and the Bunnymen!! Mike |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| Oh man, Gang of Four - I'd nearly forgotten about them. I had very little exposure to them that c ame much much later and it's one of those acquired tastes. LOL Echo and the Bunnymen are great! We have one of their disks around here somewhere. I do have several Joy Division disks in my collection - somehow I think they are a little too dark for happy pop-synth. LOL The Cure/The Forest is a great track. |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| You are so right, Phyllis, about Gang of Four being an aquired taste. Around '82 my buddies were playing them on the "communal" stereo constantly. I thought myself pretty hard-core at the time, listening to the Pretenders and the Police. LOL... I couldn't understand my friends fascination with Gof4; I thought it was just a bunch of discordant noise! Then one night when I was home alone, I turned off the lights and slipped on my headphones and listened to their "Solid Gold" tape backed with "Songs of the Free". About half way thru the first side I had my "break-through" and everything came together for me. I realized that there really was a underlying logic to what they were doing and that all the parts did mesh together, (and beautifully!). I have to give them credit for my downward spiral of searching out more and more challenging music ever since... I can understand what you mean by Joy Division being darker than many of their contemporaries, but that's probably why I liked them so much. Kind of matched my mood at the time; no sugar-coating and a lot of pure angst before it became such a buzzword. Probably the same reason that I like the old 30's-50's blues as much as I do! Mike |
RE: The bestest new wave 80's music EVER!
| | |
| oh yeah, definitely no sugar coating! Tha'ts why New Order has such a pop feel, since after Ian Curtis killed himself I think they vowed never to record music like that again. Short of the two previously unreleased tracks on Substance (New Order). |
