Live 8 Highlights

| I know this is a little late, but here are some impressions. . .
Since I live about ten minutes away from where Live 8 was held in Philadelphia, I decided to stroll over to the Parkway just to check things out. I only stuck around for about an hour. There wasn't anyone on the bill I was particularly interested in seeing, except Stevie Wonder, and I wasn't going to stick around all day for him. I couldn't get close to the stage. (Well, maybe I could've, but it wouldn't have been worth the effort.) The screens set up on the Parkway were too small, and the sound wasn't very good.
I went home and watched the performances online (which meant I could also check out what was happening in other cities).
I don't know how anyone over 15 can take Linkin Park seriously. They work well as cartoons, but not otherwise.
The highlights were mostly the dinosaurs. Roxy Music sounded very good in Berlin. I caught most of the Pink Floyd set, and while I'm not a huge fan (though I do like some of their stuff), I was surprised by how good they sounded. Not pathetic at all. I was even more surprised that I liked The Who's performance, since I've never really like the Who much. Stevie Wonder also was good, though he didn't need any help from scrawny modern rock guys.
The classic rock and old-school soul pretty much ruled. The Linkin Parks, Maroon 5s (etc.), hip-hop and R&B that I caught were all yawnsome. |

| When the stupid MTV people weren't talking over their performance, or cutting it off before they were done, I thought Pink Floyd sounded great, too. |

| I heard that the MTV coverage was really bad (too much chatter, abrupt edits cutting off performances). I'm glad I watched it online (even though my PC screen has its limits). |

| The eight hour television broadcast was nothing short of an infomercial telethon. Very little coverage from seven of the nine venues, very few complete songs and zero complete sets. I suppose they succeeded in bringing awareness to the issues in Africa and the purpose of the G8 Summit but how could they not with all the yapping from the VJ's? |

Well, I have to give VH1 some love here. Saturday afternoon they showed about 5 hours of Live8 with no VJ's mucking up the show. There were commercial breaks of course, but they showed extended sets from various artists. They showed the entire Pink Floyd set with no breaks or interuptions. It was wonderful. |

| I heard that pink floyd cds are selling rather briskly and their songs are being burned off the various music sites at a great rate since their live reunion appearance the other day.The event certainly exposed them to a new and young audience.I think these kinds of large events are fun and certainly are done for good causes.Hats off to bob geldof. Its great when the musicians give some of their time up for something other than the intention lining their own pockets. |

| I watched most of the London gig,Madonna was outstanding so were the Floyd and the Who,Saint Bono and Saint Geldof are helmets, waste of space. |

| I agree on the Madonna and Who performances. I am not much of a Madonna fan but she put on a great show. The Who sounded great and Roger's scream at the end of "Won't Get Fooled Again" was much better than when I saw them 3 years ago. |

| I heard Madonna was good, but I didn't really catch any of her performance. |
