My question is -- Am I alone in actively disliking some extremely popular musicians or groups, ones that have been loved by most people for a long time?

I enjoy some of all kinds of music, including rock, punk, blues and other genres with loudness and even screaming, but ...

-- About 90% of Chrissie Hynde's performances (singer for The Pretenders) make me cringe. Why, why, why does she make those nauseating grunting noises?

-- Robert Plant (singer for Led Zeppelin) is another one -- I'm trying to desensitize myself because I know he has talent. There are some gentler renditions I can enjoy, but so many of his popular performances get on my nerves. Again, the grunting.

-- Rod Stewart sounds to me like he has a bad chest cold. Also, I may be negatively influenced by his personality.

-- Tom Petty does nothing for me. I hear no emotional resonance in his vocals.

Anyone else want to add their popular dislikes in any musical category?

For beginners, Joe Cocker. Hello? He may have rhythm, but geez Louise, I could never say he has a good voice, even back in the day. And as for his electric-shock maneurisms, don't get me started.

Tom Waits. Like gravel in a cement mixer. Does nothing for me.

God love him, Leonard Cohen's monotone-ish voice puts me to sleep (or maybe it his sublime lyrics)

Ringo Starky was a better drummer.

That tremble in Shakira's voice drives me nuts. Or maybe it's the tone, dunno.

And Ringo? Happy Birthday; 70 today!
